When someone asks “Where do you live?” or “What’s your home like?”, answer with a few personal details: the type of home and its location, one or two features, what you like or would change, and—if relevant—who lives with you. For example: “I live in a flat near the city centre. It has two bedrooms and a small balcony. I like how convenient it is, though the street can be noisy.”
Start with your home type and location
A simple opening pattern is: “I live in a ___ in/near ___.” Name a familiar kind of home, then add a location detail such as the suburbs, the city centre, or a particular floor in a building.
Words for homes vary by region: British English commonly uses flat, while American English commonly uses apartment. A tall residential building may be called a high-rise in the US or a tower block in the UK.
Common house and apartment types
- Detached house: a house that stands alone, rather than sharing a wall with another house.
- Semi-detached house: one of a pair of houses joined on one side.
- Terraced house: a house in a row, joined to neighbouring houses on both sides.
- Studio: a small apartment where the main living and sleeping space is combined.
- Converted apartment: an apartment created by changing a building originally used for another purpose.
- Duplex apartment: an apartment arranged over two levels.
Descriptions of house types sometimes say detached homes are normally larger and more expensive than terraced homes, which are normally smaller and cheaper. Treat that as a broad generalization, not a rule about every home or housing market.

Describe the rooms and features
After naming the home, mention its rooms or a feature that helps someone picture it. You do not need to list everything: one or two concrete details make a spoken answer more natural.
Pattern: “It has ___, and there’s also ___.”
Example: “I live in a semi-detached house in the suburbs. It has three bedrooms, a separate dining room, and a garden at the back.”
Useful details include the number of bedrooms, whether the kitchen is separate or open-plan, large windows, a balcony, a terrace, or a garden. Choose details that are true of your home.

Say what it feels like—and what you might change
Use an adjective with a specific reason or feature, rather than stacking several descriptions together. Spacious means there is plenty of room; cramped means there is too little space. A room with plenty of natural light is light, while one with little natural light may feel dark.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCosy suggests comfortable and pleasantly warm; stuffy describes air that feels close or poorly ventilated. A draughty room lets in cold air, while a noisy home has noticeable sound from inside or outside. Convenient is useful for a home that makes everyday activities or journeys easy.
To give a balanced opinion, connect a positive feature to a drawback or a change you would like:
- “The living room is spacious, but the kitchen is a little cramped.”
- “It’s light and cosy, though I’d like a bigger bedroom.”
- “The location is convenient, but traffic makes it noisy.”
- “I like the balcony. If I could change one thing, I’d add more storage.”
Explain who lives with you
If it fits the conversation, say whether you live alone or with other people. You can mention the relationship without giving personal details you would rather keep private.
- “I live with my parents and my younger brother.”
- “I share a flat with two friends.”
- “I live with my partner.”
- “I live by myself.”
Describe your neighbourhood
The neighbourhood is the area around your home. Give its location or character, then name a nearby place or amenity that matters to you.

Example: “I live near the city centre. It’s lively, and there are shops and a bus stop within walking distance.”
A neighbourhood might be quiet or lively, central or suburban. You could also mention nearby transport, shops, parks, or how easy it is to get to work or school.
