Then label and inspect the stored items so they are easier to find and less likely to come back musty, stretched, or damaged.
1. Clean clothes and let them dry completely
Follow each garment’s care label and launder or dry-clean it as directed before storage. Food, sweat, and body oils left in fabric can contribute to stains or pest problems. Pack clothes only when they are completely dry; damp fabric can develop mould or mildew in storage.
The Canadian Conservation Institute advises: “Be sure your textiles are clean and dry before you store them in a cool, dark, dry location with good ventilation.” Canadian Conservation Institute: Basic care – Textiles
2. Fold or hang according to the garment
Fold knits and wool
Fold sweaters and other wool or knit garments rather than hanging them when stretching is a concern. Flat storage supports the garment across its surface. Woolmark also recommends folding wool clothes for storage: How to store wool clothes.

Hang only garments that can support their own shape
Some structured garments can be hung if they are in sound condition and the hanger supports the shoulders. Avoid wire hangers for fragile or valuable textiles. Fragile, beaded, bias-cut, or weak-seamed pieces may need flatter, more supported storage instead of hanging.
Pad important textiles
For heirloom or delicate items, pad folds with acid-free tissue or clean muslin to reduce sharp creases. This extra material is useful for fragile textiles, but is not necessary for every everyday sweater.

3. Match the container to the clothes
Choose a container based on the garment’s material, structure, and storage conditions rather than relying on one solution for everything.
- Breathable cloth bags or covers: useful for some hanging or delicate garments that benefit from air circulation.
- Clean polyethylene boxes: suitable for many folded seasonal clothes stored flat in a clean, dry place.
- Vacuum bags: save space, but seal clothing away from air and are not ideal for delicate items. Make sure garments are completely dry before sealing them, and avoid using them for items that could be damaged by compression.
Leather, fur, and especially fragile textiles may need different care than ordinary seasonal clothing; do not assume a standard bin or bag is appropriate for them. The Canadian Conservation Institute discusses storage materials for textiles in its textile care guidance.

4. Choose a clean, dark, dry, ventilated storage place
Prepare the storage area before packing: clean it, keep it away from direct light, and choose a spot that is cool, dry, and ventilated. Avoid damp basements, hot attics, and garages where fumes may reach clothing. A container cannot make an unsuitable storage environment safe for textiles. Do not overfill boxes or bags; cramped contents are harder to retrieve and may crease or crush.
5. Lower the risk of pests and moisture
Start with clean, dry clothes and a clean storage space, then check stored items periodically for signs of insects or moisture. No container or pest product should be treated as a guarantee against damage.

For delicate or valuable textiles, follow conservation guidance rather than using mothballs as a routine fix. The Canadian Conservation Institute advises against mothballs and cautions about cedar chests. Label each box or bag with the season and its contents, and note where it is stored. A short inventory can help you find a particular garment without opening every container. Check periodically for dampness or insects, and air out garments after taking them out of storage before returning them to your wardrobe.
