How to Store Lumber on a Jobsite to Prevent Warping and Moisture Damage

Store lumber on a stable, level base at least above soil and, where practical, above concrete; cover it against rain and snow without trapping humid air; keep airflow moving; separate wet stock for stickered drying; inspect after storms; and install material as soon as the schedule reasonably allows. That combination limits avoidable moisture exposure, but it cannot make wood dimensionally inert. Lumber continues to gain or lose moisture as jobsite conditions change, so product instructions and the intended service environment still control.

The right arrangement depends on whether the material is ordinary framing lumber, wet or nearly green stock, treated lumber that has not redried, or a visible engineered member such as glulam. Use the procedure below as a practical jobsite system, then apply the current supplier instructions for the specific product.

Why storage affects warping and decay

Wood changes dimensions as its moisture content changes. A board that dries unevenly can cup, bow, twist, split or check, while repeated wetting can support mold and decay. The American Wood Council’s technical material also discusses stress associated with rapid drying from heat; that older publication is useful background, not a current building code.

Kiln-dried lumber is not permanently dry. Once it reaches a jobsite, it responds to the surrounding humidity and wetting. Good storage slows those changes and avoids adding unnecessary water, but it does not guarantee that every piece will remain straight. A board can also warp because of growth stresses, grain direction, knots, machining or restraint; not every distortion is a storage failure.

Choose the storage location before the truck arrives

Best option: a dry, covered area

A roofed, ventilated shed or enclosed building gives the most reliable protection from precipitation. Keep the floor dry, maintain clearance from walls that may sweat or leak, and leave enough room to move air around the package. Do not place lumber where roof runoff, plumbing leaks or wash water can reach it.

When outdoor storage is unavoidable

Select the highest practical part of the site: level, well drained and away from standing water, mud and traffic that could damage the supports. A tarp can block rain and snow, but it is not a sealed bag. For a general lumber stack, the U.S. Department of Energy Building America Solution Center recommends leaving the ends open so air can circulate and drying can continue.

Situation Preferred setup Main control
Covered shed Stack on pallets, skids or stickers with clear air paths Keep the floor and surrounding area dry
Outdoor package for short-term use Stable elevated supports plus a weather cover Cover the top and sides while leaving general-stack ends open for ventilation
Wet or nearly green lumber Stickered layers in a covered, ventilated area Allow controlled air movement instead of trapping moisture under a tight tarp
Glulam beam or column Dry blocking, protection from sun and rain, and drainage provisions in the wrap Follow the glulam manufacturer’s current handling instructions

Step-by-step jobsite storage procedure

1. Confirm what arrived

Before unloading, identify species, grade, treatment, moisture condition and product type. Separate ordinary framing packages from engineered members, finish-grade stock, wet or nearly green lumber and treated material that has not fully redried. Check factory wrapping for tears, open seams and water trapped inside. Photograph damage and notify the supplier or project manager when the condition may affect acceptance.

2. Prepare a drained, level footprint

Remove debris and create a base that will not settle under the load. Do not rely on a shallow depression in a slab or on bare soil. The precise drainage detail depends on the site, but water must have somewhere to leave the storage area rather than pooling beneath the package.

3. Elevate every package

Use sound pallets, skids, blocking or lumber stickers to keep the load off soil and concrete. The DOE Building America Solution Center states: “Keep stored building materials elevated off the ground with pallets or stickers (i.e., long pieces of lumber).” Its explanation is that elevation prevents absorption from ground moisture and leaves room for air circulation.

A U.S. government wood-care publication associated with the National Conference on Weights and Measures gives 150 mm (6 in.) above ground as an example for supporting lumber packages. Treat that figure as guidance from that publication, not as a universal code requirement for every job. The supports must be stable, aligned and capable of carrying the package without allowing boards to sag into puddles. No single support spacing or rack load rating is established by the cited guidance, so use the supplier’s instructions and the project’s handling plan.

4. Keep bundles straight while they are supported

Place supports on a firm plane and align them so boards are not forced into a permanent bend. Keep packages strapped until you are ready to distribute the material, unless the supplier requires earlier opening for drying. If you break a bundle, rest the remaining pieces on evenly aligned supports rather than leaving individual boards on the slab.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Cover against precipitation, not against ventilation

Use a tarp or other suitable cover to shed rain and snow. Pitch the cover so water runs off instead of collecting in a sag. For a general outdoor pile, leave the ends open as DOE recommends. Weight or secure the cover so wind cannot lift it, but do not cinch it around the stack so tightly that humid air and liquid water are trapped.

Inspect the cover and factory wrap whenever weather or site activity could have displaced them. Repair openings, remove pooled water and restore the air gap. A cover that is intact on top but sealed around a wet package can create the very high-humidity pocket the storage system is meant to avoid.

6. Isolate wet stock for controlled drying

Wet or nearly green lumber should be stickered in a covered, ventilated area. Place dry, uniform stickers between layers so air can reach the broad faces and ends. Keep the pile stable and protected from direct rain while it dries. Do not assume that a closed tarp over a compact bundle will dry the contents; without air paths, it can preserve moisture and encourage staining or mold.

The USDA Forest Products Laboratory advises this ventilated, stickered approach for wet lumber. If treated lumber has not fully redried, follow the treatment supplier’s handling and installation directions rather than applying a generic drying schedule.

7. Reduce the time between delivery and installation

Coordinate deliveries with framing and erection dates when feasible. Every extra day outdoors creates another opportunity for rain, splash, cover damage or uneven drying. Shorter storage is a risk-reduction measure, not a substitute for elevation and covering.

8. Inspect after disruptive weather

Walk the storage area after heavy rain, snow, high wind or flooding. Look for standing water, shifted supports, displaced tarps, torn wrap, blocked ends and boards touching wet surfaces. Correct the condition promptly and separate material that has been submerged, visibly moldy or distorted for evaluation. The available guidance does not establish a universal hourly, daily or weekly inspection interval; set one that matches the weather, exposure and project risk.

How to store wet, green and ordinary framing lumber

Wet or nearly green stock

Give wet material a dedicated stickered pile under cover. Airflow should pass through the layers and around the ends, while the roof or tarp prevents new rain. Avoid placing freshly wet boards in a tightly wrapped package or against a cold slab where condensation and slab moisture can add water.

Kiln-dried or ordinary framing packages

Keep the factory bundle elevated and protected. Opening a package can improve access but also exposes more surface area, so open only what the work sequence requires. If boards are temporarily distributed around the site, put them on supports rather than directly on soil or concrete and cover them again at the end of the shift.

Treated lumber

Water-repellent treatment can reduce rain wetting, but USDA guidance says it does not remove the need to protect lumber from rain and soil contact. Treatment also does not establish that the piece is ready for installation; use the treating company’s instructions for redrying, fastening and handling.

Glulam beams and columns need product-specific handling

Visible glulam members should not be treated as ordinary dimensional-lumber bundles. APA’s glulam builder guidance says to keep beams and columns covered to protect them from direct exposure to sun and rain, especially in hot, dry climates. It also calls for separation from wet surfaces, dry blocking to provide ventilation, and slitting the wrapping on the bottom where necessary so trapped water can drain.

Keep the protective wrap until installation in accordance with that guidance, then allow the member to stabilize in the enclosed space as directed. Protect finished faces from abrasion and avoid dragging members through mud or standing water. Confirm the current instructions for the specific manufacturer, finish and connection system; the APA advice is product-specific and should not be generalized to every lumber type.

Moisture-content figures: useful context, not universal jobsite targets

Figure What it represents How to use it
150 mm (6 in.) A support-elevation example for lumber packages in a U.S. government wood-care publication reported in the 2022-era National Conference on Weights and Measures material Use as a practical reference; it is not a universal code requirement
6%–14% APA’s usual in-service moisture-content range once a structure is complete Context for completed buildings, not a receiving, storage or installation specification for every jobsite
About 20%–25% or higher APA’s description of prolonged high-moisture conditions that can lead to decay and mold growth Not an instantaneous threshold or universal mold-onset rule; duration, temperature, species and exposure matter

There is no single moisture-content target established here for all species, climates, products or stages of construction. An older specialist discussion of relative humidity and equilibrium moisture can help explain controlled storage, but those examples are not jobsite targets. Use the project specification, product standard and manufacturer’s current documentation when a numerical acceptance limit is required.

What to do when the jobsite gets wet

  1. Stop new exposure. Re-cover the pile, secure the cover against wind and move material out of active runoff if it can be done safely.
  2. Remove standing water. Clear blocked drainage and correct low spots around the supports. Do not let packages sit in puddles.
  3. Restore elevation and airflow. Replace collapsed blocking, reopen covered ends on a general stack and ensure no boards are pressed against wet concrete.
  4. Check the inside of the wrap. Look for trapped water, torn film and staining. For glulam, use the manufacturer’s prescribed drainage slit rather than improvising a fully open package.
  5. Separate questionable pieces. Mark boards that are visibly moldy, swollen, split, submerged or badly distorted and have them evaluated before installation.
  6. Re-sequence the work. Install sound material sooner when practical and give wet stock a ventilated stickered location to dry. Do not close in a moisture-damaged assembly merely to keep the schedule.

Common storage mistakes and their fixes

  • Setting bundles on soil or concrete: Move them onto stable pallets, skids, stickers or blocks. Elevation limits ground and slab moisture transfer and creates an air path.
  • Sealing a tarp around the entire pile: Cover the top and sides against precipitation, but leave general-stack ends open for ventilation. Drain and dry trapped water rather than wrapping it in.
  • Confusing general lumber and glulam instructions: DOE’s open-end advice applies to general outdoor stacks; APA’s glulam guidance separately calls for keeping the wrap in place while providing bottom drainage. Apply each instruction to its intended product.
  • Assuming kiln-dried means permanently dry: Expect wood to respond to surrounding moisture and protect it during the whole period before enclosure.
  • Using 6%–14% as a universal jobsite target: That APA range describes usual in-service conditions after completion, not every delivery or installation decision.
  • Relying on water-repellent treatment alone: Treatment may reduce rain wetting but does not replace a dry base, cover and separation from soil.
  • Leaving material exposed because installation is “soon”: A short planned delay can become several storms. Schedule delivery close to use and inspect whenever weather changes.
  • Using an unverified rack: A rack can organize a smaller pile, but no particular design or load rating has been established here. Verify capacity, anchorage and stability before loading one.

Build a repeatable storage checklist

Post this checklist at the unloading area and assign responsibility to the foreperson or material coordinator:

  • Storage footprint is level, drained and outside active runoff.
  • Every package is supported above soil and concrete; the 150 mm (6 in.) example is considered where appropriate, without treating it as a universal code rule.
  • Supports are stable, aligned and suitable for the package load.
  • Cover sheds rain and snow, is secured against wind and does not trap water.
  • General outdoor-stack ends remain open for airflow.
  • Wet or nearly green lumber is separated, stickered and ventilated under cover.
  • Factory wraps are checked for tears and trapped water.
  • Glulam is blocked dry, protected from sun and rain, separated from wet surfaces and drained according to its product guidance.
  • Delivery and installation dates minimize exposure time.
  • After disruptive weather, the team checks standing water, supports, covers, wraps and airflow.

Sources and limits of the guidance

The handling principles above are supported by the USDA Forest Products Laboratory’s Principles for Protecting Wood Buildings from Decay, the U.S. DOE Building America Solution Center’s material-storage guidance, APA’s moisture-mitigation and builder resources, APA’s glulam handling bulletin, the American Wood Council’s technical discussion of moisture-related dimensional change, and the National Conference on Weights and Measures wood-care material. Some are older publications and should be read as practical guidance rather than current code.

These sources do not establish one inspection interval, support spacing, tarp specification, rack load rating or moisture-content target for every jobsite. Structural members, treated lumber, unusual climates and project-specific specifications require the current manufacturer and design documents.
