To stop winter condensation, lower indoor moisture first, then warm the cold glass. Water forms when humid indoor air reaches a window surface below the air’s dew point. Measure indoor relative humidity, use exhaust fans that vent outdoors, vent the dryer outside, reduce unnecessary humidifier use, and dry wet sills promptly. If humidity is already controlled, improve air movement and the window’s thermal performance with appropriate sealing, storm windows, or glazing upgrades.
Why water forms on the inside of windows
Indoor air always contains some water vapor. Showers, cooking, dishwashing, houseplants, humidifiers and drying clothes indoors add more. When that moist air touches glass that is cold enough, the vapor changes into liquid droplets. The room-facing pane is often the coldest interior surface, so a window can reveal a moisture problem before you notice dampness elsewhere.

Condensation does not automatically mean the window is defective. It usually indicates a combination of indoor humidity and a cold window surface. A tightly sealed, well-insulated window can still collect water during a cold snap if indoor humidity is high. Conversely, an older or poorly insulated window may sweat even at moderate humidity because its interior glass temperature is lower.

Interior droplets that appear after bathing or cooking point toward indoor humidity. Moisture that returns around one frame, appears after rain, or stains a wall requires a water-entry investigation rather than humidity control alone.

Check indoor humidity before changing the windows
Place an indoor humidity meter (hygrometer) in the room where condensation occurs. EPA guidance says indoor relative humidity should generally stay below 60 percent, with 30 to 50 percent described as an ideal range in its homeowner mold and moisture guide. Those figures are broad guidance, not a guarantee that every window will remain dry in freezing weather.
As outdoor temperatures fall, the maximum humidity that a cold window can tolerate also falls. EPA presents the following suggested maximum indoor humidity levels, attributed on its page to guidance from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. The year of that association guidance is not stated on the EPA page.
| Outdoor temperature | Suggested maximum indoor relative humidity |
|---|---|
| +20°F | 35% |
| +10°F | 30% |
| 0°F | 25% |
| -10°F | 20% |
| -20°F | 15% |
These temperature-linked values are not a universal target for every climate, building or window. They are a practical cold-weather reference from EPA’s moisture-control guidance. If your meter reads 45 percent while the outside temperature is 0°F and water is forming, lowering humidity toward the colder-weather recommendation is more useful than treating 45 percent as automatically safe.
How to take a useful reading
- Keep the meter away from a radiator, supply register, kitchen steam and direct sunlight.
- Let it sit in the room for several hours before recording the reading.
- Check at different times: after showers, while cooking, overnight and during the coldest weather.
- Compare rooms. A bathroom or laundry area may be much more humid than a bedroom.
A single reading can miss short humidity spikes. Repeated readings show whether moisture control is working and whether condensation tracks a particular activity.
Reduce moisture where it is produced
Source control is usually the fastest and least expensive fix. The objective is to keep water vapor from spreading through the house, not merely to wipe droplets after they appear.
Bathrooms
Run the bathroom exhaust fan during a shower and continue afterward long enough to clear the steam. The fan must discharge outdoors, not into an attic, wall cavity or roof space. If the room still fogs heavily, check that the grille is clean, the fan actually moves air and the duct terminates outside. Keep the bathroom door closed while steam is being removed, then open it when the room has cleared if that improves circulation.

Kitchens and dishwashing
Use a range hood or kitchen exhaust fan whenever boiling, simmering or running a dishwasher creates visible steam. Outdoor venting matters: a recirculating hood may filter grease and odors but does not remove water vapor. Cover pots when practical and avoid leaving a kettle or pot steaming unnecessarily.

Clothes drying and laundry
Vent a clothes dryer outdoors. Never terminate its duct in an attic, crawlspace, garage or interior room. Indoor clothes drying can add substantial moisture; use an outdoor line or a properly vented dryer when possible. Keep laundry-room doors and exhaust arrangements from allowing damp air to migrate toward colder rooms.
Humidifiers, plants and routine moisture
Turn down or pause a humidifier when window water appears, then use the hygrometer to decide whether any humidification is needed. Plants, mopping and frequent dishwashing also contribute vapor. You do not need to eliminate normal household activities, but reducing unnecessary moisture can keep the indoor level below the condensation threshold.
Remove moisture that has already condensed
Wipe glass, frames and sills as soon as practical. Drying prevents water from soaking wood finishes, drywall, trim and insulation. EPA warns that persistent moisture can damage materials and encourage mold growth; its guidance on controlling moisture is available at epa.gov/mold/what-are-main-ways-control-moisture-your-home.
Wiping is not a cure by itself. If droplets return every morning, find the moisture source and measure humidity. Use a dehumidifier when source control and ventilation do not bring readings down. Empty and clean the unit as directed, keep its air intake and outlet unobstructed, and prevent the collected water from becoming a maintenance or sanitation problem.

Improve warm-air circulation around the glass
Warm room air can keep the interior pane above its condensation point. Keep interior doors open where practical so air can move between rooms, and use a fan to distribute heat when one room is consistently colder. Avoid placing furniture, boxes or thick curtains directly against a window if they trap a pocket of cold air at the glass.

This circulation advice is a practical application of EPA’s general recommendation to promote air movement. It is not a substitute for correcting high humidity or a leak. Do not block a required return-air grille, combustion-air opening or safety egress window while rearranging furnishings.
Warm the window surface and stop drafts
When humidity is within a reasonable range but condensation remains, the glass may simply be too cold. EPA identifies storm windows and caulking around windows as measures that can reduce moisture problems. Caulk only where a joint is intended to be sealed and where the material is suitable for the substrate; sealing a drainage path or covering evidence of a leak can make damage worse.
Storm windows and glazing upgrades
A storm window adds a layer of protection and can raise the temperature of the existing interior surface. Replacement glazing, insulated glass and other window improvements can also reduce heat loss. The right choice depends on the existing frame, climate, installation quality and whether the primary problem is cold glass, air leakage or water intrusion.
Do not assume that a new window alone will solve condensation. A tighter window can reduce uncontrolled air exchange, so indoor moisture still has to be managed. Confirm that the installation includes proper flashing, drainage and perimeter sealing.
Warm-edge spacers
The U.S. Department of Energy explains that warm-edge spacers are a window-design feature intended to lower a window’s U-factor and reduce condensation at the glass edge. They are most relevant when droplets form in a narrow band around the perimeter rather than across the whole pane. See DOE’s overview of window types and technologies for the terminology and design context.
Use the location and timing of droplets to choose the next step
| What you observe | First response | When an upgrade or assessment fits |
|---|---|---|
| Condensation follows showers or cooking; the humidity meter reads high | Run outdoor-vented exhaust, reduce moisture sources and measure again | Use a dehumidifier if readings remain high after source control |
| Water is concentrated at the glass edge or the entire pane is cold | Improve air movement and keep coverings from trapping cold air | Consider a storm window, glazing improvement or warm-edge spacer in a replacement unit |
| Wetness appears around one frame, after rain, or with staining | Dry the area and look for the entry path | Repair flashing, sealant or other building defects as appropriate; do not rely on humidity reduction alone |
| Condensation persists and spreads to sills or adjacent walls | Recheck humidity, exhaust performance and room temperatures | Arrange a qualified building assessment for concealed moisture, leaks or ventilation problems |
A practical winter troubleshooting sequence
- Record the conditions. Note the outdoor temperature, room temperature, humidity-meter reading, window location and what was happening before droplets appeared.
- Check the moisture sources. Confirm that bathroom and kitchen fans run during moisture-producing activities and discharge outdoors. Verify that the clothes dryer vents outdoors.
- Adjust humidity. If the reading is above 60 percent, reduce moisture immediately. During very cold weather, compare the reading with EPA’s temperature-based maximums rather than relying only on the general 30–50 percent range.
- Dry the affected materials. Wipe the pane, frame and sill. Remove standing water and inspect nearby trim, drywall and flooring for swelling, staining or soft spots.
- Improve circulation. Open interior doors where appropriate, move heat-blocking furniture and coverings away from the window, and use a fan to mix room air without creating a safety hazard.
- Test the result. Recheck humidity and the window during the next shower, cooking period and cold overnight period. A sustained drop in humidity should reduce the amount and duration of condensation.
- Inspect the window and envelope. If the room is dry but the glass remains wet, check for failed seals, drafts, damaged caulk, poor flashing, blocked drainage or an unusually cold frame.
- Escalate persistent problems. If dampness reaches walls, returns after repairs, or cannot be explained by indoor humidity, obtain a qualified inspection before adding insulation or sealing assemblies.
When condensation signals a larger building problem
Recurring water on the sill, damp drywall, peeling paint, musty odors or mold growth deserves prompt attention. Moisture may be entering through a roof, wall, window flashing or plumbing connection rather than condensing from room air. Compare the timing with rainfall and snowmelt, and look for a localized pattern.

EPA’s indoor-air-quality reference guide notes that inappropriate insulation and vapor-control decisions can create concealed moisture problems. Assemblies should be designed for the building and climate; sealing one surface without understanding drying paths can move condensation into a wall or roof cavity.
Common fixes that disappoint
Only wiping the glass
Wiping removes liquid but leaves the humidity, cold surface or leak unchanged. Use it as immediate damage control while addressing the cause.
Turning up a humidifier because the air feels dry
Skin comfort is not a reliable measure of safe window humidity. Let the meter and outdoor temperature guide adjustments, especially during a cold snap.
Using a recirculating fan as if it were an exhaust fan
A fan that sends air back into the room does not remove water vapor. Confirm that the duct terminates outdoors.
Sealing every gap with caulk
Caulk can reduce legitimate air leakage, but it cannot replace flashing repairs and should not block designed drainage. If water appears after rain, determine the entry path first.
Adding plastic film without diagnosing the pattern
A temporary interior film may change the temperature of the original pane, but the reviewed guidance does not establish performance for a particular film kit. Treat any retrofit as conditional on correct installation, safe egress and the absence of hidden leaks.
How to decide whether you need a product, repair or professional help
- Choose measurement first when you do not know the indoor humidity. A hygrometer gives you a baseline before you spend on equipment.
- Choose ventilation or dehumidification when readings are high or spikes follow showers, cooking or laundry.
- Choose circulation changes when humidity is controlled but curtains, furniture or room layout leave the glass unusually cold.
- Choose caulk or weatherstripping selectively when you can identify an air-leak path and the joint is intended to be sealed.
- Consider storm windows or glazing work when condensation is concentrated on cold glass or edges despite controlled humidity.
- Hire a qualified assessor when water is localized, appears with rain, reaches walls, produces mold or persists after the basic sequence.
What humidity should a house have in winter?
EPA’s general guidance is below 60 percent relative humidity, ideally 30–50 percent. In freezing conditions, EPA also presents lower suggested maximums: 35 percent at 20°F outdoors, 30 percent at 10°F, 25 percent at 0°F, 20 percent at -10°F and 15 percent at -20°F. Use those numbers as cold-weather guidance attributed to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, not as a single year-round rule. Your windows, insulation, ventilation and climate determine the level at which condensation begins.
