It will not kill weeds that are already growing, and it can also prevent desirable grass seed from sprouting.
What a lawn “barrier” does—and what it does not do
A pre-emergent is a herbicide that acts in the soil to interfere with germination or very early growth of specified weeds. It is not a physical sheet, a permanent barrier, or a universal weed killer. It can reduce the weeds named on its label when treatment is correctly timed; it does not remove established weeds. The University of Georgia Extension’s explanation of winter pre-emergent use describes the treatment as a chemical barrier that must be activated in the soil.

If weeds are already visible, identify them and consider a suitable post-emergent treatment or a nonchemical control. A pre-emergent is for preventing specified weeds from getting started, not for clearing an existing infestation.

Annual weeds germinate in different seasons, so a fall application aimed at some winter annuals is not the same treatment window as a spring application aimed at summer annuals such as crabgrass. A single application should not be assumed to control every seasonal weed.
#1 Best Overall
- Designed to prevent weeds; will not aid in eliminating existing weeds. Prevents grassy and broadleaf weeds, including crabgrass, poa annua, goosegrass, henbit, and more.
- Contains 0.48% of the active ingredient prodiamine for professional-grade weed control for early spring and fall applications
- Made with patented DG Technology (dispersible granule) ensures granules dissolve rapidly upon watering, moving weed control directly into the soil for maximum impact
- Small particles for more coverage per square inch and superior performance
- Made in the USA
Calendar dates are regional examples, not nationwide instructions. UGA Extension’s North Georgia guidance places treatment for summer weeds from late February to mid-March and treatment for winter weeds from late August through September. Those dates reflect that region; local extension advice and the herbicide label should guide decisions elsewhere. See UGA Extension Forsyth County’s timing guidance and its Bartow County explanation of separate summer- and winter-annual windows. For bermudagrass lawns in Texas, consult the Texas A&M AgriLife bermudagrass home-lawn calendar rather than transferring dates from Georgia.
Check these points before applying
- Identify the target weed. Confirm whether the problem is a weed the product label lists and whether it germinates in the season you are preparing for. If you cannot identify it, seek local extension or qualified turf advice rather than choosing a product by the word “weed preventer.”
- Confirm your turfgrass. Check the label for compatibility with your lawn’s grass species. Herbicides are not interchangeable across turf types. Maryland Extension lists dithiopyr, pendimethalin, prodiamine, and benefin as examples used for grassy weeds, but that list is not a recommendation for a particular lawn or a complete control guide. Its Maryland lawn-weed herbicide options are specific to the guidance provided there.
- Decide whether you will seed or overseed. Pre-emergents can interfere with desirable grass seed as well as weed seed. If you plan to establish, repair, or overseed your lawn, check the product label for restrictions, any permitted exceptions, and the interval before seeding. University of Maryland Extension discusses the conflict in its guide to starting a new lawn; NC State Extension also addresses fall weed-control choices in relation to lawns in its fall weed-control guidance.
- Follow the full label. Use only the labeled rate and application method, and follow directions for watering or other activation, weather, turf tolerance, re-entry, and reseeding intervals. The product label—not a general calendar—is the authority for that formulation’s use.
Why “right now” is not a reliable instruction by itself
The right timing depends on your region, the weeds you have had, your grass type, and whether you intend to seed. Even the North Georgia windows above cannot be applied as a national schedule. For a decision, combine local guidance on the weed’s germination season with the exact product label; if the lawn has visible weeds or you are planning renovation, the appropriate next step may be different from applying a pre-emergent.
