A conventional refrigerant dehumidifier normally makes its room slightly warmer, not colder. It cools air across an evaporator to condense water, then sends that dried air across a warm condenser; the compressor and fan also turn electrical energy into heat. A cool draft usually means the compressor has paused for automatic defrost or fan-only operation, or that the unit is running in a cold space where its coils are frosting.
To reduce the cold feeling, measure the room’s relative humidity (RH), raise the humidity target only as far as moisture control allows, use a timer or lower fan speed when your model provides those controls, improve airflow around the appliance, and check the manual’s minimum operating temperature. Repeated frost, continuous cool discharge, unexpected shutdowns, or humidity that stays high after these checks warrant manufacturer support or a qualified appliance technician.

Start by identifying what is actually happening
The sensation and timing of the air tell you more than the room temperature alone. Watch one complete operating cycle and note whether the discharge is warm, cool for a short interval, or cool all the time.
| What you notice | Most likely explanation | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Air leaving the unit is warmer than the room | Normal refrigerant dehumidification: the air is reheated after moisture is removed, and the appliance adds the heat produced by its electrical input. | Check the RH reading. If the room is already dry enough, increase the setpoint or schedule shorter operating periods. |
| A cool breeze appears intermittently, then warm air returns | Automatic defrost or fan-only operation. The compressor stops while the fan moves room air across the coils. | Look for a defrost or fan indicator and check the model manual for the normal cycle. |
| The exhaust feels cool continuously while the compressor is supposed to be running | Possible incorrect mode, very low room temperature, heavy frost, restricted airflow, or a fault. | Compare the discharge with the room air, inspect the filter and clearance, and verify the operating range before calling for service. |
| Ice forms on the coil or the unit repeatedly enters defrost | The space may be too cold for that model, or air may not be moving freely through a dirty filter or blocked inlet. | Measure the room temperature, clean the filter as directed, and use the manufacturer’s temperature limits rather than a generic cutoff. |
| The room feels cold even though the exhaust is warm | Long run times, air movement, drafts from doors or windows, or a room that was already cold can outweigh the modest heat added by the appliance. | Measure RH and temperature at the occupied part of the room, then reduce unnecessary run time and stop outside air or moisture entering the space. |
This distinction matters because a dehumidifier is not an air conditioner. If the unit is performing normal warm-exhaust dehumidification, replacing it with another conventional model will not eliminate the airflow sensation; controlling run time and the room’s moisture load is the useful remedy.

Why normal dehumidification usually warms a room
In a portable refrigerant unit, a fan draws room air over a cold evaporator coil. Water vapour condenses on that coil and drains into a tank or hose. The now-drier air passes over the condenser, which is hot because it rejects the heat collected by the refrigeration cycle. It then returns to the room.
ASHRAE explains that nearly all of the electrical power driving this refrigeration process ultimately becomes heat. The room therefore receives the heat removed from the air plus the compressor and fan’s electrical input. ENERGY STAR tells users not to be alarmed if air directly around a dehumidifier is warmer than the surrounding area. The exact increase depends on capacity, run time, room size, insulation, and ventilation; it is not a universal temperature gain.
LG’s 2025 guidance for its covered dehumidifier models describes an increase of about 5°F under its stated conditions. Treat that figure as model-specific, not a promise for every appliance or room. A small, poorly insulated basement can still feel uncomfortable when a fan runs for hours, even though the appliance is adding heat overall.

1. Measure RH instead of guessing
Read the dehumidifier’s RH display if it has a useful one. If it does not, place a separate indoor hygrometer in the occupied part of the room, away from the exhaust stream, exterior doors, windows, radiators, and direct sunlight. Let the instrument settle before changing settings.
ENERGY STAR gives 30–50% RH as a general optimum indoor range. In colder climates during the heating season, it advises 30–40% to help limit condensation on windows. Those are general targets, not a reason to force every room to the lowest number. A basement with condensation, a recently repaired leak, or building materials that are still drying may need a different plan and closer monitoring.
2. Raise the target when the room is already dry enough
A humidistat cycles the compressor around the chosen setpoint. If the display or hygrometer shows that the room is below the level you need, increase the target in small steps. A higher target shortens the duty cycle, so the fan moves less air and the room receives less appliance heat and noise.
Do not disable humidity control merely to stop a cool feeling if the space still has condensation, musty odours, visible mould, or a known moisture problem. Instead, choose the highest RH that keeps the particular room and its contents dry, then verify the result with the hygrometer after several hours.

3. Use a timer and the lowest useful fan setting
If your model has a timer, schedule operation for the dampest period or for a defined drying window rather than running continuously. LG describes timers that switch covered models off after the selected period; controls and available durations vary by unit.
Select low fan speed only if your appliance provides it and the manual permits it. Lower speed can make the airflow feel less intrusive, but it does not guarantee warmer air and may reduce moisture-removal performance. Stop the unit or return to automatic control if RH rises too far.
4. Give the appliance clear, clean airflow
Follow the manual’s filter-cleaning interval and remove dust that restricts the inlet or outlet. Keep furniture, stored materials, curtains, and construction debris away from the grilles. ENERGY STAR says air must circulate freely around units that do not discharge through a top outlet; GE’s general guidance calls for 18 inches of air space on all sides. Use the clearance specified for your exact model when it differs.
Keep doors and windows to the treated space closed while the dehumidifier runs unless you are deliberately ventilating. Open openings bring in humid air and force longer cycles. Place the unit on a stable, level surface where its warm discharge does not blow directly at a bed, desk, or occupied work area. Never block an outlet to redirect the air.
5. Check the room temperature before blaming the appliance
Measure temperature near the unit and in the part of the room where people spend time. A cold basement, crawlspace, garage, or unfinished area can make normal fan movement feel chilly. Compare the discharge temperature with room air during compressor operation and again during a suspected defrost period.
ENERGY STAR’s consumer guidance warns that frost can form on condensing coils when air temperature drops below 65°F. That is general guidance, not a universal cutoff. Haier’s support guidance describes automatic defrost below 60°F and advises checking that the room is above 41°F if frost continues on its covered units. Other models have different limits, so use the operating range printed in your manual or specification sheet.
6. Watch one complete defrost cycle
When frost begins, many units stop the compressor and keep the fan running to melt ice. GE states that an appliance in defrost mode can blow cold air into the room. LG similarly describes automatic defrost that stops the compressor until the cycle ends. A short cool draft followed by normal warm discharge is therefore often expected.

If the unit has a defrost icon, note how long it remains active and whether the compressor restarts. Do not scrape ice from a coil with a tool or pour hot water into the cabinet. Switch the appliance off, unplug it if the manual instructs you to do so, and allow ice to melt safely before checking the filter, clearance, and room temperature.

Shortening the moisture load is usually more effective than trying to make the appliance’s exhaust feel warmer. ENERGY STAR recommends measures such as:
- Venting a clothes dryer outdoors rather than into the building.
- Running kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans during and after activities that create steam.
- Repairing plumbing, roof, foundation, or appliance leaks promptly.
- Improving basement drainage where water is entering through floors or walls.
- Keeping unnecessary doors and windows closed while the dehumidifier treats the space.
After the source is corrected, continue checking RH. A unit that previously ran all day may then cycle briefly, reducing both airflow and the feeling of cold.
Choose a sensible RH target for the room
Use the following as a starting framework, then adjust based on measured condensation and the room’s use:
| Situation | Practical starting target | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Typical occupied room with no condensation | Within ENERGY STAR’s general 30–50% RH range | Comfort, window condensation, and whether the unit cycles rather than runs continuously |
| Cold climate during heating season | 30–40% RH, as ENERGY STAR suggests for reducing window condensation | Dry skin or materials, condensation at the coldest glass, and actual hygrometer readings |
| Basement or work area with a known moisture source | Set a level that controls the observed moisture while the source is repaired; do not choose a low number solely to compensate for a leak | Wall, floor, and stored-material dampness; the duration of each cycle; and the source of water |
| Room that feels cold but measures acceptably dry | Raise the setpoint modestly or use a timer to reduce unnecessary cycles | RH after the change, rather than comfort alone |
Relative humidity is temperature-dependent: heating or cooling the room can change the RH reading even when the amount of water in the air has not changed. That is another reason to measure at a consistent location and time instead of making repeated large setting changes.

Prevent frost and repeated defrost in cold spaces
Low temperature reduces a refrigerant dehumidifier’s ability to collect water and makes the evaporator more likely to ice. The fan may then deliver cool air during frequent defrost cycles, while the compressor spends less time actually removing moisture.
- Confirm the room stays above the minimum temperature stated for your exact model, including overnight conditions.
- Keep the filter, inlet, and outlet clean and unobstructed.
- Leave the required clearance so room air can reach the coil.
- Check whether the unit is in a dedicated low-temperature or continuous mode rather than a comfort setting.
- Observe whether ice returns after a complete thaw and a correctly configured restart.
If the space regularly falls below the unit’s specified range, do not solve the problem by adding a heater next to the appliance. That wastes energy, can create fire hazards, and does not correct a model that is unsuitable for the temperature. ENERGY STAR advises considering a dehumidifier specified for lower temperatures when the space requires ongoing dehumidification in those conditions.

When a different dehumidifier is the right fix
Replacement makes sense only after you establish the room’s temperature and moisture load. Compare products using the conditions in which they will actually operate, not just the largest advertised capacity.
| Comparison point | Why it matters in a cold room | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum operating temperature | Determines whether the compressor can work without constant frost and defrost. | The manufacturer-stated range for the exact model, not a threshold copied from another brand. |
| Moisture-removal performance at your temperature | Rated extraction can fall substantially as room temperature drops. | Comparable test conditions and the expected litres or pints per day at the room’s actual temperature. |
| Automatic defrost and frost control | Controls how often the compressor pauses and the fan blows room-temperature air. | Whether defrost is automatic, how the indicator behaves, and what the manual says about cold operation. |
| Humidistat and timer | Lets you stop once the room reaches its target instead of running continuously. | Setpoint range, sensor location, timer options, and whether low fan speed is available. |
| Energy efficiency | A long-running unit can add considerable heat and electricity cost. | Comparable labelled integrated energy factor (litres of water removed per kilowatt-hour), measured under the same rating conditions. |
A larger nominal capacity is not automatically better. If it is not designed for the room’s low temperature, it may frost, remove little water, and spend much of its time in defrost. Select a product whose operating range and performance data match the space.

Rooms under construction, recently repaired after a leak, or used for material storage can have unusually high moisture loads. Before relying on a dehumidifier, identify whether water is still entering through the building envelope, plumbing, drainage, or ventilation. A machine can remove vapour from the air but cannot stop liquid water or a continuing leak.
Keep the unit clear of sawdust, drywall dust, insulation fibres, and other debris. Follow the manual for filter inspection; construction dust can load a filter faster than ordinary household dust. Protect the power connection from wet floors, use only the electrical arrangement permitted by the manual, and leave the condensate hose or tank accessible so an overflow does not create another moisture problem.
When drying a space, record temperature and RH at consistent times. If RH falls while the room becomes colder and frost increases, the appliance may be operating outside its useful range. Pause and confirm the manufacturer’s limits rather than increasing the run time indefinitely.
Signs the behaviour is outside normal operation
Arrange manufacturer support or qualified appliance service when any of the following remains after basic setup checks:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The discharge is continuously cool even during the period when the compressor should be running.
- Ice returns quickly after a full thaw, clean filter, clear airflow, and room temperature within the stated range.
- The unit shuts off unexpectedly, trips protection, leaks, or shows an error code.
- RH remains high despite closed openings, correct settings, clear airflow, and a moisture source that has been addressed.
- The fan or compressor never changes state as the humidistat and timer settings require.
Give the service provider the model number, room temperature, RH readings, filter and clearance status, and a description of when the cool air appears. That information is more useful than saying only that the room feels cold.

Answers to common questions
Should a dehumidifier make a room colder?
Normally no. A conventional refrigerant unit generally returns warmer air because it reheats the dried air and converts electrical input into heat. A temporary cool draft during defrost or fan-only operation is normal for many models.
How do I stop cold air from a dehumidifier?
First determine whether the cool air is limited to defrost. Then verify room temperature, clear the filter and airflow path, raise the RH target if the room is already dry, and use a timer or lower fan setting when supported. Persistent cool discharge requires the model manual and possibly service.
Will turning the fan to low make the exhaust warmer?
Not necessarily. Low speed can reduce the sensation of moving air, but it may change moisture-removal performance and does not guarantee a higher discharge temperature. Use it as a comfort control only when the manufacturer provides it.
Do I need a separate hygrometer?
Yes, if the dehumidifier lacks a reliable RH display or humidistat. ENERGY STAR specifically recommends a separate hygrometer in that situation. Place it away from the unit’s exhaust so it measures the room rather than the appliance’s immediate air stream.
Can I use a space heater beside the dehumidifier?
Do not add a heater solely to counteract the appliance without considering fire safety, electrical load, and energy use. A heater does not fix frost, blocked airflow, a moisture source, or a dehumidifier operating below its specified temperature range.
When should I buy a low-temperature dehumidifier?
Consider one when the room regularly stays below your current unit’s stated operating range and still needs dehumidification. Compare the exact minimum temperature, cold-room extraction performance, defrost controls, humidistat, timer, and comparable energy-efficiency rating before replacing the appliance.
