To square a stud, either mark a square crosscut line with a framing square or set a right angle in a larger layout with a tape measure and the 3-4-5 method. Use the first method for a line across one board; use the second to establish or check a larger corner.
Step 1: Mark a square line across one stud
- Seat the framing square. Place its heel firmly against a straight edge of the stud, with the tool lying flat. Check that the square is undamaged and sits properly against the edge.
- Draw the line. Hold the square steady and draw along its blade across the stud’s face. A carpenter’s square can guide a cut line across a board, as illustrated in the U.S. Navy carpentry guide.
The line is square to the edge you use as your reference. If that edge is damaged or irregular, the mark will inherit its error; choose a sound, straight edge instead. This method marks a crosscut line—it does not, by itself, check whether a stud already installed in a wall is plumb or whether the surrounding frame is square.
Step 2: Square a larger corner or check a rectangular layout
Establish a right angle with a 3-4-5 triangle
- From the corner, measure 3 units along one leg and 4 units along the adjoining leg. Use the same unit for both measurements.
- Adjust the layout until the two marks are 5 units apart. When the sides measure 3, 4 and 5 units, the corner is a right angle. The BC Carpenter Apprenticeship Program describes this method and proportional multiples such as 12-16-20 units (BC Carpenter Apprenticeship Program: 3-4-5 method).
You can use any consistent unit and scale all three lengths by the same factor. A larger triangle can make small marking errors less significant relative to the measured span, which is useful when laying out a wall or other larger assembly.
Check an assembled rectangle with its diagonals
Measure both diagonals between opposite corners and compare them. Before relying on that check, confirm that the sides have the intended lengths and that opposing sides are parallel; equal diagonals alone do not make a rectangle with incorrect dimensions acceptable. The BC curriculum advises checking the diagonals and sides together (BC Carpenter Apprenticeship Program: checking diagonals).
#1 Best Overall
- MULTI-FUNCTIONAL FRAMING SQUARE: Double laser etched markings for enhanced visibility for quick measurements
- CONVERSION TABLES: Features rafter tables and octagon scales for precise measurements and calculations in carpentry and other construction projects
- SOLID ALUMINUM CONSTURCTION: High quality aluminum that resists corrosion and enhances durability for long-lasting use
- GRADUATIONS: Clearly marked 1/8, 1/10, 1/12, 1/16-Inch scales for accurate and versatile measurement capabilities
- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN: Framing square is made from lightweight aluminum ensuring an easy and convenient carry
That curriculum gives 1–2 mm as an example of diagonal agreement for a building-location layout. It is specific to that context, not a universal tolerance for studs or framing.

- Made in the USA: Swanson Tool Company makes the Speed Square in the United States.
- CNC Machined: Every Speed Square is CNC machined to a perfect 45° and 90° corner. Square marks that read true right off the pivot, cut after cut, year after year.
- Heavy-Gauge Die-Cast Aluminum Alloy: A heavy-gauge aluminum alloy die-cast body, 15 times stronger than standard aluminum construction. Holds its 90° tolerance under drops, dust, and jobsite abuse.
- Matte Finish: Glare-free reading in direct sunlight. The body doesn't blind you on a roof deck at midday like a polished square will.
- 7/8 in. Heel and 1/4 in. Scribe Bar: The 7/8 in. heel holds the square against the board edge for square and 45° marks or to guide a circular saw. The 1/4 in. scribe bar rips parallel layouts off that same edge.
