Estimate the usable energy your chosen loads need over a defined period, then check separately that the battery and inverter can supply those loads at the same time—including start-up surges. Your answer depends on whether the goal is shifting energy into the evening, backing up selected circuits, or powering most of the home during an outage.
Start with the job the battery needs to do
A battery sized for daily bill shifting may not be large enough for an extended outage. Before comparing products, decide which circuits or appliances should run, when they need power, and for how long.
- Evening solar use: Estimate the electricity you want to store during the day and use after solar production falls. This is a time-window calculation, not automatically a whole-home backup calculation.
- Critical-load backup: Identify the essentials you want to keep running, such as refrigeration, lighting, communications, or selected heating equipment. Choose an autonomy period—the number of hours or days you want them supplied without grid power.
- Whole-home backup: Include the loads you expect to use together, their operating schedules, and high-demand equipment. This usually requires more energy and may require greater power delivery than backing up a few circuits.
For a resilience system, the U.S. Department of Energy cautions that “Technically, residential solar panels alone are not enough to make your home resilient.” The inverter, battery, controls, and wiring must support operation when the grid is down. DOE’s Solar and Resilience Basics explains the distinction.
Gather your household’s load data
Use utility bills for a broad view of consumption and interval data, if your utility provides it, to see when electricity is used. Monthly totals alone do not reveal which loads need backup or whether several demanding appliances run at the same time.

- List the circuits or appliances that matter. Separate must-run loads from optional ones, and note any that should not operate during an outage.
- Estimate each load’s running demand and hours. Appliance labels, manuals, circuit information, and measured data can help. A whole-home or circuit energy monitor can clarify patterns when records are insufficient; a plug-in meter measures only the appliance plugged into it and does not capture whole-home demand.
- Record start-up demand where relevant. Motors and compressors can draw more power briefly when starting than while running. Check appliance specifications or have an installer assess the load.
- Use a consistent operating scenario. State which loads run together and for how long. Avoid treating a household’s average daily consumption as the backup target unless the intent is genuinely to supply that entire average profile.
Estimate the energy capacity you need
Energy capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh): it describes how much energy can be stored. For a simple constant-load estimate, multiply average power in kilowatts (kW) by operating time in hours:
Energy required (kWh) = average load (kW) × operating time (hours)

- One Powers All. The unit of DELTA Pro Ultra whole house generator includes an inverter and a battery. One inverter supports 120V & 240V and has an exceptional 7200W output, allowing you to run almost any heavy household appliance, even a 3-ton central air conditioner. Triple the inverters for an incredible 21.6kW AC output, allowing you to live life to the fullest even during an outage. The electric generator achieves a total 7200W output even during charging.
- Strong Power Security. Scalable from one battery of 6144Wh, two days of essential power, all the way to 15, it multiplies the energy to a gigantic 90kWh. For a standard North American household, that's over 30 days of essential power secured.
- Customize Your Home Power. Use the EcoFlow app to priolritize specific circuits in your home, extending your backup even longer. For more than just blackouts, it intelligently analyses your home power usage to offset peak rates while utilizing solar to lower energy bills.
- Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
- Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.
For example, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s 2024 Technology Tips for Solar + Storage guidance gives a 10 kWh battery paired with a 2 kW average load as a five-hour autonomy example. That is arithmetic, not a recommended household size or a promise of five hours of real-world service. The load must remain within the system’s power limits, and usable energy and system losses affect delivered energy. The example appears in the NREL guidance PDF.
For a changing load profile, estimate energy by adding the needs of the selected loads over the chosen period. A rough appliance-level calculation is each load’s average running kW multiplied by the hours it operates, summed across loads. Where operating schedules overlap, that affects the power check as well as the energy total.

Check power separately from energy
Power capacity, measured in kW, is the rate at which the battery system can deliver electricity. A battery may hold enough energy for a long run time but still be unable to operate multiple chosen loads simultaneously. The U.S. Department of Energy distinguishes storage energy capacity from power capacity in its Solar Integration: Solar Energy and Storage Basics.
- Compare the system’s continuous power rating with the combined running demand of loads expected to operate together.
- Check peak or surge capability against the start-up demand of motors, pumps, compressors, and other equipment.
- Confirm the inverter and backed-up circuits can support the intended load pattern; a battery’s kWh rating alone cannot answer this.
Translate required energy into a usable battery size
The amount printed as a battery’s nameplate capacity is not necessarily the amount the home can draw. Manufacturers may specify a separate usable capacity, and conversion losses and operating limits affect the energy delivered to loads. Compare the required delivered energy with the product’s listed usable kWh and its applicable efficiency; do not assume a generic efficiency applies to a particular system.

As context—not as a household recommendation—the National Laboratory of the Rockies’ 2024 Annual Technology Baseline models a representative residential lithium-ion system at 5 kW and 12.5 kWh, with an 85% representative round-trip-efficiency assumption based on cited technical literature. These are modeling inputs, not specifications for every current product. The 2024 ATB residential battery storage assumptions provide that context.

Grid-tied solar panels generally shut off during an outage unless the system is configured to operate safely in an islanded mode. Ask whether the proposed inverter and controls support backup operation, which circuits will remain energized, and whether solar can recharge the battery while the grid is unavailable. Solar panels connected to a standard grid-tied system do not necessarily keep producing usable power for the house during a failure.

Compare systems against the same scenario
Use one load list, duration, and operating assumption for every option. This makes differences meaningful instead of comparing headline capacity numbers that may describe different capabilities.
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Usable energy | Usable kWh available to the home, rather than nameplate capacity alone |
| Power delivery | Continuous kW and peak or surge kW, compared with simultaneous running and start-up loads |
| Expected duration | Estimated runtime for the exact selected loads and schedule |
| Efficiency and limits | Applicable round-trip efficiency, operating limits, and the basis for those figures |
| Backup operation | Inverter compatibility, islanding behavior, and which circuits can be supported |
| Solar charging | Whether and how the system can recharge from solar during an outage |
| Expansion and warranty | Product-specific expansion options and warranty or throughput terms |
| Installation conditions | Panel and wiring compatibility, utility interconnection, local permits and codes, and installed cost for your location |
Verify site and local requirements before installation
Battery capacity is only one part of a workable design. The U.S. Department of Energy advises involving the utility early and checking applicable electrical, building, and fire-code requirements. Ask a qualified installer to review the electrical panel, interconnection process, permits, and any local installation conditions before settling on a system. Incentives and requirements vary by location and are not established by battery capacity alone.
