To make a comfortable cushion that fits a wooden chair, measure that chair’s seat and back uprights, draft a pattern to match, then sew a fabric cover around cotton batting or cotton wool. Add ties where they line up with the chair—not at assumed standard positions—and quilt the filling so it is less likely to shift.
Choose the cushion style and materials
For a natural-fiber cushion, use cotton, linen, or canvas for the cover and cotton batting or cotton wool for the filling. Cotton, linen, and canvas are documented options, not a tested ranking: the sewing instructions do not establish which lasts longest or feels best. Choose a fabric suited to how the chair will be used.
- Cover: cotton, linen, or canvas.
- Filling: cotton quilt batting or cotton wool.
- Other supplies: lining fabric, matching thread, scissors, a ruler or tape measure, paper for a pattern, and a sewing machine.
- Attachment: matching-fabric ties positioned to fit the chair’s back uprights.
Foam is another possible cushion core, but it is not a natural fiber. The project instructions identify it as an alternative; they do not establish that it is more or less comfortable than cotton filling. For dining chairs, Sailrite recommends considering stain-resistant fabric because spills are possible. That recommendation does not establish the stain performance of any particular natural fabric.
Measure the chair and draft a pattern
Measure the individual seat rather than relying on a standard cushion size. Record the seat’s width and depth, and trace or sketch its outline, including a tapered or rounded front. For a trapezoidal seat, measure its widest point. Also measure the distance between the chair-back uprights where the ties will sit; their spacing varies.

- Use paper to trace the seat outline at the intended finished cushion size.
- Mark the back edge and the tie positions to match the chair uprights.
- Add seam allowance outside the finished outline. One pattern-tool guide suggests 1.0–1.5 cm for beginners; Gütermann’s example uses 1 cm. These are project settings, not mandatory dimensions. See Katagami’s chair-pad instructions and Gütermann’s example pattern.
Gütermann’s instructions describe one round cushion measuring 42 cm in diameter and 5 cm high, with approximately 300 g of cotton wool and a 1 cm seam allowance. Those figures apply to that example pattern only; they are not a universal size or filling quantity. Base your own pattern and filling on the chair and the cushion shape you want.
Sew a batting cushion with ties
- Cut the pieces. Cut two outer-fabric pieces and two lining pieces to your pattern. Cut the batting slightly smaller than the fabric pieces to reduce bulk in the seam. Cut two ties long enough to fasten around the chair uprights.
- Prepare the ties. Fold each tie lengthwise with right sides together, sew along its long edge, turn it right side out, and press. Check the marked attachment positions against the chair before sewing.
- Pin the layers. Place the two outer pieces right sides together. Position the unfinished ends of the ties at the marked back-edge locations, pointing inward between the fabric layers. Secure the tie ends so they will be caught in the seam.
- Sew the perimeter. Stitch around the cushion using the seam allowance on your pattern, leaving an opening large enough to turn the cushion and insert or arrange the filling. A cited guide uses a 15 cm opening for its project; adjust the opening to suit your cushion. Backstitch over the tie attachment points to reinforce them.
- Turn and fill. Turn the cover right side out through the opening. Arrange the batting inside without bunching it, then close the opening with stitching.
- Topstitch and quilt. Topstitch around the edge. Stitch through the layers in a grid or diamond pattern to help keep the batting from shifting.
- Check the fit. Tie the cushion onto the chair and confirm that it sits flat and the ties meet the uprights. Adjust the pattern or tie positions before making additional cushions.
For a simple batting pad, sandwiching the filling between outer and lining fabric creates a straightforward construction. For a thicker or foam-filled cushion, adapt the construction to the chosen core; the cited project sources describe foam alternatives but do not provide a controlled comfort comparison.

Fit and care considerations before making more
- Check the finished cushion on the actual chair before duplicating the pattern, especially if you are making pads for several chairs.
- Keep the ties aligned with the uprights and reinforce their seams, since those attachment points take the force of tying and movement.
- If spill resistance matters, consider a stain-resistant cover fabric for dining use; do not assume that cotton, linen, or canvas has a particular stain rating.
- The cited sewing instructions do not provide comparative abrasion-life, sustainability, or ergonomic testing for the listed fabrics and fillings.
