You can build one from a plan for small jobs, but the plan’s stated 22-gauge limit is not a tested capacity rating; for defined width, angle and material limits, compare it with a specified commercial brake.
How a mini bending brake works
The brake holds a sheet against a straight clamping edge. A hinged handle or bending leaf then raises the portion of metal extending beyond that edge. The clamping line becomes the bend line, so alignment and secure clamping matter as much as the lifting motion.
In the Woodsmith design, a hardwood base and hinged handle work with angle iron that clamps the sheet and forms the bending point. The plan is sold by Woodpeckers as a downloadable or printed plan. Its listing says it includes step-by-step instructions, illustrations, a materials list, hardware-supply sources and plans for five simple sheet-metal projects. The public listing does not give all dimensions or the complete materials list, so use the plan itself rather than estimating those details: Woodsmith Sheet Metal Bending Brake Plan.
What the DIY plan can—and cannot—tell you
The Woodpeckers/Woodsmith listing states that the brake handles sheet metal up to 22 gauge. That is a seller-stated limit, not an independently tested result, and the listing does not establish the brake’s working width, maximum bend angle or minimum bend depth. Do not treat its gauge claim as proof that every material at that thickness will bend reliably; material type, setup and construction affect the result.

DIY plan or ready-made portable brake?
Malco’s Portable Mini-Brake is a separate, manufactured tool, not a specification for the homemade design. The manufacturer says it accepts sheet up to four feet wide and makes bends up to 135 degrees. Its listed capacities differ by material. Consider the job’s width, metal type, bend geometry and whether you want to build a tool or use one ready-made.

Set up and make a bend
The following sequence reflects a JET-branded brake operator manual. Brake designs differ, so follow the manual for the actual tool, particularly for clamping pressure and setup adjustments.
- Set up the work area. Support the sheet so it cannot sag or shift. Keep the clamping edge and bending leaf clear of obstructions.
- Set the brake for the material. Set the proper setback and clamping pressure for the sheet thickness. The JET manual says fingers should be parallel to the edge of the clamping block; for box-and-pan work, choose fingers close to the finished piece dimensions.
- Mark and align the bend line. Open the clamp, place the sheet, and align its marked line with the brake’s bending edge.
- Clamp securely. Close the clamp without forcing the handles. The sheet should be held firmly along the intended bend line.
- Raise the bending leaf. Lift the leaf to the target angle, then lower it and release the sheet. Check the bend before making further adjustments.
Account for bend allowance and springback
Bend allowance is the length adjustment needed to account for metal that will form the bend. Its exact value depends on factors including material hardness and whether the bend runs with or across the grain. The JET manual notes that trial bends may be needed to establish an allowance for the material and setup in use.

Its sturdy construction makes it ideal for professional production environments, as well as factories, workshops, home shops, and personal use
Metal also relaxes slightly toward its original shape when the bending force is released. This springback means the finished angle can be less than the angle reached under load; a slight overbend may be needed. Make a test bend in scrap when accuracy matters, then adjust the setup or bend angle based on the result. These are general operating principles from the JET manual, not a substitute for the instructions for a particular brake: JET brake operator manual.

- Keep hands and fingers clear of the clamping beam and moving parts.
- Stand to the side so the rising apron does not strike you.
- Support large or heavy stock to prevent it from tipping or shifting.
- Wear eye protection with side shields, safety footwear and leather gloves. Gloves help protect against burrs and sharp edges, but keep hands away from pinch points.
- Follow the safety and operating instructions supplied with the brake you are using.
