Set up an autonomous robotic mower as a complete system, not as a machine you simply place on grass. The mower, charging station, power supply, installation kit, navigation system, app, and lawn layout must all work together. A safe installation has a correctly positioned and powered station, a complete boundary and guide-wire loop (or a correctly configured wire-free reference system), marked exclusion zones, verified safety limits, and supervised first mowing cycles. Keep people and animals out of the active area, and isolate the mower before you reach under its deck or handle its blades.

What a safe installation includes

Every installation has five functional elements: the robotic mower, its charging station, the power supply, the lawn-navigation system, and the controls used to schedule and monitor mowing. In a wire installation, the navigation system also includes boundary wire, guide wire, stakes, connectors, and a complete electrical loop. The station is more than a parking bay: the operator manual describes three jobs—sending control signals along the boundary wire, sending signals along the guide wire, and charging the mower.

Use the exact operator manual for the purchased model and installation method. Limits for lawn area, slope, passage width, weather, battery charging, blade replacement, and safety functions vary by model and firmware. Local electrical rules apply to the mains connection; do not improvise wiring or bypass a safety device.

Plan the lawn before placing equipment

Draw a site sketch

Walk the entire property and sketch the grass, buildings, fences, gates, trees, planting beds, ponds, drains, retaining walls, steps, drop-offs, driveways, paths, children’s play areas, pet areas, and likely cable routes. Mark the proposed charging station, every narrow passage, and any area the mower must not enter. A sketch exposes dead ends and crossings before you bury or stake wire and gives you a record to use when troubleshooting.

  • Identify all lawn sections the mower must cover and whether they are connected or separate zones.
  • Measure slopes and passages against the model’s stated limits; do not rely on a visual estimate.
  • Mark hazards that remain hazards even with wire-free navigation: ponds, open drains, edges, steep drops, loose cables, beds, roots, and objects that can move into the lawn.
  • Locate an outdoor electrical outlet that meets the power-supply instructions and local code, with a route that will not become a mowing or trip hazard.
  • Plan access for cleaning the station, removing the mower, and servicing it without standing in the mowing path.

Choose the navigation method

Characteristic Boundary-wire installation Wire-free installation
How the lawn is defined A continuous boundary loop carries control signals around the working area; a guide wire leads the mower toward the station and through suitable passages. The model’s specified positioning system and reference station define the virtual working area. Follow the model-specific EPOS or reference-station manual.
Physical installation Wire, stakes, connectors, and careful routing are required. Reference-station placement, clear positioning, and a digital map or boundary setup are required; exact requirements are model-specific.
Hazard treatment Wire can exclude mapped areas, but physical hazards still need clearance or barriers. Virtual boundaries do not remove ponds, drops, beds, cables, or other physical hazards; identify and protect them.
Typical fault to investigate Broken loop, loose connector, displaced wire, poor guide routing, or signal interference. Reference-station visibility or position, map errors, positioning loss, or an incorrectly drawn exclusion zone.

Do not assume wire-free means maintenance-free or that it removes the need for a site survey. Select the system for the lawn’s shape, passages, slope, tree cover, and your ability to maintain its reference equipment.

Install a boundary-wire system step by step

The 2024 quick guide’s sequence is: ensure you have everything you need; assemble and place the charging station; charge and start the mower; lay the boundary wire; connect the guide wire; connect the wires to the charging station; pair the app; then set a schedule and start mowing. The detailed procedure below expands that order while retaining the model manual as the controlling instruction.

  1. Inventory the kit. Confirm the mower, charging station, power supply, low-voltage cable, boundary wire, guide wire, stakes, specified connectors, installation tools, and any safety key or PIN information are present. Use only parts approved for the model.
  2. Place the charging station. Choose a relatively horizontal, firm surface with open approach space in front. The mower must be able to approach, align, reverse, and leave without a tight turn, obstruction, standing water, or a narrow pinch point. Leave the clearances specified in the manual rather than copying a distance from another model.
  3. Connect power correctly. Route the low-voltage cable from the station to the power supply so it is protected from mower blades, traffic, pets, water accumulation, and sharp edges. Connect the power supply to the required 100–240 V outlet only where local rules permit. Keep plugs and joints dry and use the supplied weather protection.
  4. Charge and start the mower. Place the mower in the station, turn it on according to the manual, and allow it to charge while you install the wires. Record the PIN, account details, and any initial settings in a secure place.
  5. Lay the boundary loop. Starting at the station connection, route the wire around the complete working area and return it to the station. Keep the specified distance from ponds, drop-offs, walls, beds, tree trunks, fences, and other edges. Use extra care at corners: avoid sharp kinks and follow the manual’s minimum bend radius. Leave no unplanned gap; a loop that is not electrically continuous cannot guide the mower reliably.
  6. Protect crossings and transitions. Secure the wire with stakes at the model’s recommended spacing, especially on slopes, turns, entrances, and places where foot traffic or weather could move it. Press or bury it only by the method allowed for that product. Keep it away from exposed metal, other buried services, and locations where later digging is likely.
  7. Route the guide wire. Connect the guide wire at the charging station and run it through the lawn so the mower can find the station from remote areas and negotiate passages. Make smooth, generous turns; avoid tight guide-wire angles, sudden zigzags, and routes that force the mower toward a hazard. Connect the guide wire to the boundary loop using the specified connector and leave a reliable, protected joint.
  8. Connect and test the station wiring. Attach boundary and guide wires to the correct terminals, close covers, and check that connectors are fully seated. Power the station and look for the status indication described in the manual. A fault indication at this stage is easier to correct than one discovered after the wires are covered.
  9. Pair controls and set the schedule. Download the model’s specified app, pair it with the mower, set the date and time, accept offered firmware updates, and define the lawn, no-go zones, working hours, and charging behavior. Set an initial schedule that gives you daylight and time to observe the mower.

Set up a wire-free mower

Wire-free variants use a model-specific positioning and reference-station system. Install and position that reference station exactly as its EPOS or equivalent manual requires; height, horizon, obstructions, communication, and mounting can affect the usable area. Create the virtual boundary and exclusion zones in the specified app, then verify them physically on the lawn.

  • Map each lawn section and passage while you can see the property clearly; do not draw a boundary through a pond edge, open drain, drop-off, bed, or cable route.
  • Use physical barriers where a software boundary cannot stop a fall, prevent access to water, or keep the mower away from a fragile surface.
  • Confirm that the reference station remains powered, stable, and unobstructed during normal operation and seasonal weather.
  • Run the mower slowly under supervision to check that its displayed position matches its real position at every boundary and exclusion zone.

Commission the mower before unattended operation

Prepare the work area

Before each initial test and before the first unattended schedule, remove toys, hoses, sticks, stones, tools, wire offcuts, and other loose objects. Close gates, secure temporary barriers, and keep children, pets, visitors, and bystanders out of the active work area. Confirm that the grass is within the mower’s height and slope limits and that no temporary construction activity will introduce new hazards.

Run supervised verification cycles

Use several short cycles at different times and from different parts of the lawn. Stay close enough to stop the mower, but never place hands or feet in its path. Verify each item below rather than assuming a successful first departure proves the installation is safe.

  • Departure and boundary response: The mower leaves the station cleanly, recognizes every boundary, and does not repeatedly approach an edge or cross an exclusion zone.
  • Guide-wire travel: It enters and follows the guide route through passages without snagging, making a dangerous turn, or becoming stranded.
  • Docking and charging: It returns along the intended route, aligns with the contacts, begins charging, and resumes or remains parked according to the schedule.
  • Clearance and obstacles: It maintains safe clearance from walls, trees, beds, furniture, and known objects. Do not use obstacle detection as permission to leave hazards in the lawn.
  • Lift, stop, and emergency behavior: Confirm the mower stops as described when lifted, stopped from its control, or otherwise interrupted. Test only according to the manual and keep clear of the blades.
  • App reporting: Check that location, status, alerts, schedule, and firmware information shown in the app match what is happening on the lawn.

Stop the mower and correct the installation if it shows repeated boundary errors, loses positioning, cannot dock, makes abnormal noise, suffers physical damage, or behaves unsafely. Do not solve a recurring fault by extending the schedule or leaving the mower unattended.

Operate safely around people and pets

Schedule mowing when children, pets, guests, and contractors are unlikely to enter the lawn. A mower may detect some obstacles, but detection capability, stopping distance, and behavior vary by model and software version. Supervision is particularly important around play areas, narrow passages, gates, slopes, and newly changed landscaping.

  • Keep children from riding, touching, chasing, or attempting to retrieve the mower.
  • Keep pets indoors or in a separate secured area during mowing until you have established that their behavior and the mower’s behavior are safe together; never rely on a pet’s familiarity with the machine.
  • Inspect the lawn for small objects before a scheduled cycle. A toy, stone, hose, or branch can damage the deck, blades, or object itself.
  • Pause or cancel the schedule before lawn work, irrigation adjustments, deliveries, parties, or any activity that puts people in the mowing area.
  • Use no-go zones and physical barriers for temporary hazards, but remove or update them when the site changes.

If the mower enters a place it should not, stop it from the app or physical control as instructed, then switch it off before retrieval if the manual requires. Never reach toward a moving mower to redirect it.

Isolate the mower before cleaning or blade work

Grass and debris can accumulate under the deck, around wheels, at sensors, and on charging contacts. Before turning the mower over, removing a blockage, inspecting blades, or touching the underside, stop it, switch it off, remove it from the charging station, and isolate the battery or safety key if the model provides one. Wear suitable gloves and use approved replacement parts.

  1. Cancel the schedule or place the mower in its maintenance state.
  2. Switch the mower off using the model’s control.
  3. Remove it from the station and disconnect or isolate the battery or safety key as directed.
  4. Wait for all movement to stop, then place the mower on a stable surface with the blades inaccessible to other people.
  5. Clean and inspect it, reassemble every cover and fastener, and restore power only after the work area is clear.

Do not wash electrical parts with a hose unless the manual explicitly permits that method. Keep water away from connectors, the power supply, and exposed contacts.

Maintenance that prevents avoidable failures

Interval or trigger Check Action
Before a cycle Lawn and work area Remove toys, hoses, stones, branches, and new obstacles; confirm gates and barriers.
Regularly and after wet mowing Deck, wheels, sensors, and charging contacts Switch off and isolate the mower, then brush away grass and debris. Dry parts as directed.
After landscaping or ground movement Boundary wire, guide wire, stakes, joints, connectors, and covers Look for cuts, pulled stakes, exposed sections, loose joints, and damaged covers; repair with specified components.
When cutting quality falls or at the model’s stated interval Blades and screws Inspect for wear or impact damage and replace at the exact interval and torque specified for the model.
When alerts or behavior change Software, battery, docking, and navigation Apply offered firmware updates, check contacts and the station, review the map and schedule, and follow the fault procedure.

Compatible installation products, storage equipment, wheel kits and brushes, replacement blades, and cleaning products are listed on the manufacturer’s support material; compatibility must be checked against the exact model. Do not substitute a visually similar blade, screw, connector, or power component.

Prepare for seasonal storage and recommissioning

  1. Clean the mower, deck, wheels, sensors, and contacts, then dry everything as the manual directs.
  2. Follow the exact battery charge level, shutdown procedure, and temperature range in the model manual. Battery storage requirements are not interchangeable between models.
  3. Protect the charging station, power supply, connectors, and low-voltage cable from frost, standing water, impact, and rodents. Disconnect or store them only as instructed.
  4. Keep the mower, station, wire map, PIN, account access, firmware notes, and configuration details together. Photographing wire joints and station connections can simplify spring troubleshooting.
  5. At recommissioning, inspect the lawn for erosion, new beds, construction, fallen branches, damaged wire, and moved reference equipment. Recheck every exclusion zone and run supervised cycles before restoring an unattended schedule.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The mower reports a boundary or positioning error

For a wire system, inspect the entire loop for cuts, loose connectors, displaced stakes, and water-damaged joints. Check that boundary and guide wires are in the correct station terminals and that the station’s status indicator matches the manual. For a wire-free system, check reference-station power, position, visibility, and the digital map. Do not extend the boundary or redraw a zone until the underlying fault is identified.

The mower will not dock or leaves the station repeatedly

Clear the approach, confirm the station is level and stable, clean the charging contacts, and inspect the guide route for a tight turn, obstruction, or damaged wire. Verify that the station has power and that the mower’s schedule and time are correct. A mower that cannot dock reliably should not be left to run unattended.

The mower stops in the lawn

Check for an object under the deck, a blocked wheel, excessive slope, loss of positioning, low battery, weather-related limits, or a boundary fault. Isolate the mower before lifting or removing anything. If the same stop repeats after the installation is checked, use the model’s fault procedure or authorized service rather than bypassing a sensor or safety switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cut is uneven or strips remain

Confirm the schedule gives the mower enough access to every zone, the guide route reaches remote sections, and no-go zones are not unnecessarily large. Inspect blade sharpness, wheel condition, and deck debris. Mowing performance depends on the model’s area capacity, cutting system, weather limits, and lawn growth; do not compensate for an undersized installation by disabling safety limits.

Compare models using installation and safety criteria

Decision area Questions to answer from the exact manual
Navigation Does it use boundary wire, wire-free positioning, or both? What reference equipment and map setup are required?
Capacity and terrain What supported lawn area, maximum slope, passage width, and zone count are specified?
Charging How does it find the station, how long does charging take under stated conditions, and what happens when the battery is low?
Safety detection What obstacle, lift, tilt, stop, and emergency functions exist, and what are their limitations?
Environment What rain, temperature, operating-hours, and cleaning restrictions apply?
Controls Can the app manage schedules, multiple zones, exclusion areas, alerts, firmware, and theft protection?
Ownership support Are blades, screws, wire connectors, batteries, wheels, and covers available locally, and who provides model-specific service?

Do not compare a headline lawn-area number with another model unless the measurement conditions and terrain assumptions are equivalent. Battery capacity, noise, warranty, service coverage, firmware features, and prices are model-, region-, and date-dependent; obtain the current specification and local terms before purchase.

When to stop and call for service

Stop operation if there is abnormal noise, smoke, a hot or damaged battery, cracked housing, exposed wiring, repeated uncontrolled movement, a failed stop function, or a mower that repeatedly enters a prohibited area. Isolate the mower and power supply as the manual directs. Do not open sealed battery packs, defeat a safety sensor, splice a damaged power cable, or continue testing after impact damage. Provide the service technician with the model, firmware version, fault message, site sketch, and a description of when the fault occurs.

A practical handover checklist

  • Station is level, stable, powered correctly, and has a clear approach.
  • Boundary loop and guide route are complete, secured, correctly connected, and documented—or the wire-free reference station and map are verified.
  • Physical hazards, no-go zones, slopes, passages, and gates have been checked against the manual.
  • App pairing, date, time, PIN, firmware, schedule, and alerts are configured.
  • Supervised cycles confirmed boundary response, guide travel, docking, charging, obstacle clearance, and stop behavior.
  • Everyone who may use the lawn knows how to pause, switch off, isolate, and report a fault.
  • Cleaning tools, approved blades and screws, storage instructions, and configuration notes are available.
