How to Set Up and Fix an Ethernet Port in the Wall

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An Ethernet wall port is a passive RJ45-compatible outlet—it does not provide Internet by itself. To work, the cable behind the outlet must be correctly terminated at both ends, with the remote end connected to a router or Ethernet switch. The typical repair is to replace or re-terminate the keystone jack, connect the far end to the network equipment, and test the complete cable run.

What is behind an Ethernet wall plate?

A wall Ethernet connection usually consists of several separate parts:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Keystone jack: The female socket installed in the wall plate.
  • RJ45 plug: The male connector on a patch cable.
  • In-wall cable: The permanent Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6A cable running through the wall.
  • Patch panel or structured wiring module: The central point where cables from different rooms are terminated.
  • Router or switch: The active equipment that supplies the network connection.

The complete path normally looks like this:

Router or switch → patch cable → patch panel or structured wiring module → in-wall cable → wall jack → patch cable → computer or other device

If the wall jack is not connected to an active LAN port at the other end, plugging in a laptop will produce no network connection.

What you need

Basic repair kit

  • A Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6A keystone jack matching the cable category
  • A compatible wall plate or insert
  • A 110 punch-down tool
  • Cable jacket stripper or small cable cutter
  • Side cutters
  • An Ethernet cable tester with a remote unit
  • A known-good patch cable
  • Flashlight and labels

For a permanent in-wall solid-conductor cable, a keystone jack is usually preferable to crimping an RJ45 plug directly onto the cable. Use a plug only when it is specifically rated for the cable type and the installation calls for it.

For structured-cabling guidance on category-rated connectors, service loops, and termination practices, see Leviton’s residential installer guide.

Check whether the outlet is really wired for Ethernet

An outlet that accepts an RJ45 plug is not proof that the wiring behind it is suitable for Ethernet. Before repairing it, remove the wall plate carefully and inspect the cable.

Look for these signs

  • The cable jacket is marked Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6A.
  • There are eight individual conductors arranged as four twisted pairs.
  • The cable is solid-conductor structured cable rather than a flexible stranded patch lead.
  • The conductors are punched into a data-rated keystone jack or patch panel.

Do not assume that a blue cable is Ethernet cable. The wiring may be for telephone service, an alarm, speakers, coaxial equipment, or a proprietary system. Some homes use eight-conductor cable for telephones, but it may be daisy-chained through several outlets or terminated on a telephone distribution block rather than home-run to a network panel. That arrangement may not support reliable Ethernet, particularly Gigabit Ethernet.

A cable marked Cat5e is intended for structured cabling and Gigabit Ethernet applications when the cable, terminations, installation, and connected equipment are all suitable. A jack cannot upgrade a lower-grade or damaged cable.

T568A and T568B wiring standards

T568A and T568B are both recognized eight-conductor wiring layouts. The practical rule is to follow the color diagram printed on the keystone jack and use the same standard at the opposite end. When repairing an existing installation, preserve the standard already used if it is correctly terminated.

T568B is common in residential installations. Its pin order is:

See Cable Matters’ keystone-jack wiring reference for the same conductor sequence and jack-layout explanation.

Do not infer the punch-down order from the visible orientation of an RJ45 plug. Keystone jacks may place the terminals in a different physical order, so use the jack’s printed A/B legend. Changing only one end can create a miswire or loss of link.

How to terminate or replace the wall jack

  1. Disconnect network equipment. Unplug the patch cable from the relevant switch or router port. If the run may carry Power over Ethernet, follow the tester and equipment instructions and do not carelessly probe energized wiring.
  2. Remove the wall plate. Take out the screws and gently pull the jack forward. Do not pull the cable tight.
  3. Leave a service loop. Keep enough spare cable behind the plate to allow future repairs. Leviton’s installation guidance recommends a service loop at wallplate locations.
  4. Cut back damaged cable. If the conductors or jacket were previously damaged or badly terminated, cut back to clean cable—provided enough length remains.
  5. Strip the jacket. Remove only enough outer jacket to reach the IDC terminals. Avoid nicking the conductors.
  6. Preserve the twists. Keep each pair twisted as close to the termination as practical. Excessively untwisting pairs can degrade performance.
  7. Choose A or B. Use one complete color row on the jack, normally T568B unless the existing installation clearly uses T568A.
  8. Seat each conductor. Place every wire into its matching color-coded slot and punch it fully into the IDC contact with the 110 tool.
  9. Trim the excess. Cut off protruding conductor ends after each wire is seated.
  10. Install the dust cover. If the jack includes one, fit it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  11. Mount the jack. Snap it into the compatible wall plate, insert, or low-voltage bracket. Do not force a proprietary insert into an incompatible plate.
  12. Label the outlet. Mark the room and, if known, the matching port at the structured wiring panel.

A Leviton installation sheet hosted by Home Depot illustrates the practical sequence of stripping, punching down, trimming, fitting the dust cover, and mounting the jack.

Connect the far end to the router or switch

At the central location, identify the cable serving the room outlet. Terminate loose cable into a matching keystone jack, patch panel, or structured wiring module. Then use a short patch cable to connect that port to a LAN port on the router or to an Ethernet switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not normally connect the room cable to the modem’s WAN/Internet port. The correct arrangement is generally:

Internet modem or ONT → router WAN port → router LAN port or switch → room cable

If the far end is simply loose cable, it cannot be left twisted together or fitted with an improvised connector. Both ends need proper, matching terminations. A wall jack can also connect to another wall jack, but that remains a passive cable path; one end still must connect to an active switch or router port.

Test the complete cable run

1. Inspect the hardware

Before testing, check for:

  • A loose jack or wall plate moving inside the box
  • Conductors not fully punched into the IDC contacts
  • Pairs untwisted much farther than necessary
  • Broken retaining clips on patch cables
  • Bent or recessed contacts inside the jack
  • A cable jacket pulled out of the jack’s strain-relief area
  • Crushing, sharp bends, staples, or damage near the wall plate

2. Use a cable tester

Connect the main tester to one end of the in-wall run and its remote unit to the other. A basic wiremap tester can identify opens, shorts, miswires, reversed pairs, and missing conductors. More advanced models may add split-pair detection, cable length, tone tracing, PoE checks, and switch-port identification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, the Klein Tools Scout Pro 3 supports RJ45 data-cable testing, wiremap faults, split-pair detection, cable-length measurement up to 2,000 feet, and hub-blink port identification. Its manual explains the supported cable types and operating limits.

A basic tester does not prove that the network has full throughput, that the switch is configured correctly, or that the Internet service is working. It checks the wiring functions supported by that tester.

3. Perform a link test

  1. Connect the far end to a known-good router LAN port or switch port.
  2. Connect a laptop to the wall jack with a known-good patch cable.
  3. Check for link lights on the device and switch.
  4. Confirm that the laptop receives an IP address.
  5. Check the negotiated link speed in the operating system or switch interface.
  6. Test local network access before testing Internet speed.

A cable can pass simple continuity while still performing poorly because of a split pair, excessive untwisting, physical damage, unsuitable components, or intermittent contact.

Ethernet wall-port troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause First action
No link at either end Unconnected far end, bad termination, wrong cable, or faulty port Test both ends and try a different switch port
Tester reports an open Loose punch-down, cut wire, or broken conductor Cut back to clean cable and re-terminate
Miswire or reversed pair Wrong color slot or misunderstood A/B legend Follow the printed diagram on both jacks
Split pair Conductors have continuity but the twisted pairs are mixed Re-terminate using the correct pair colors
Link is limited to 100 Mbps Pair fault, cable limitation, damaged cable, or equipment limitation Check all eight conductors, split pairs, and negotiated speed
Connection drops when moved Loose jack, damaged patch lead, or fractured conductor Replace the patch cable, then re-terminate the jack
Outlet is dead but cable passes Far end is not patched into a live switch port Connect the matching central port to a router LAN or switch port

No link light at either end

First test the two patch cables independently. Then test the in-wall run, inspect both jacks, and re-terminate one end at a time. Confirm that you identified the correct far-end cable and that the switch port is enabled. If a short cable works directly from the switch to the device but the wall run does not, the fault is in the wall path or its terminations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An open conductor

Re-seat the conductor and check whether it was cut too short. If the same pin remains open after both ends are re-terminated, suspect a broken conductor near the wall plate or damage inside the wall.

A split pair

A split pair is more serious than a simple continuity failure. All eight pins may appear connected, yet the conductors no longer form the correct twisted pairs. This can cause low-speed negotiation, intermittent operation, and poor noise immunity. Use a tester that specifically detects split pairs when possible.

Lower-than-expected speed

Check the cable category, the jack rating, all eight terminations, switch and device capabilities, cable damage, and the reported link rate. Cat6 hardware does not make a Cat5 cable faster, and a fast router cannot overcome a damaged or incorrectly terminated run.

When to repair, replace, or call a professional

Repair the existing jack

Re-terminate when the in-wall cable is intact, long enough to work with, and the problem is a loose or incorrectly punched-down termination. This is usually the least disruptive option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace the keystone jack

Replace it when the socket is cracked, loose, worn, bent, poorly labeled, or not appropriate for the cable category. Match the cable category, conductor type, shielding, and wall-plate system. For example, Leviton’s Cat5e HOME jack and Cat6 QuickPort jack are examples of category-specific components; verify compatibility before buying.

Replace the cable

A new run is usually appropriate when the existing wire is telephone cable, daisy-chained, crushed, water-damaged, too short, repeatedly faulty after both ends are re-terminated, or incapable of supporting the desired installation reliably.

Use a professional installer

Contact a low-voltage or structured-cabling professional when the far end cannot be located, multiple unlabeled cables are involved, a cable must be pulled through finished walls, PoE equipment is being installed, or the wiring may be close to mains electricity. Request a written quote specifying cable category, termination method, testing, labeling, and any wall repair.

Important edge cases and safety limits

Telephone wiring

Do not convert an outlet solely because it accepts an RJ45 plug. Confirm that the cable is Ethernet-suitable, uses four properly organized twisted pairs, and is not daisy-chained through telephone outlets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short cable

Never sharply pull a short cable from the wall. Depending on the installation, a deeper low-voltage box, an approved structured-cabling extension, a relocated jack, or a new cable pull may be necessary. Avoid concealing an unprotected inline coupler inside a wall.

Shielded cable

Shielded cable requires compatible shielded jacks and patch panels, along with correct grounding and bonding practices. Do not mix shielded and unshielded components casually.

Power over Ethernet

Access points, cameras, VoIP phones, and similar devices may receive power through the network cable. Confirm that the switch or injector supports the required PoE standard and use a PoE-aware tester where appropriate. A tester’s voltage warning is a safety aid, not a replacement for following its instructions.

The Klein Scout Pro 3 locator kit is an example of a tester variant intended to detect and test PoE as well as identify wiremap faults.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rentals and finished walls

If you rent, photograph the existing termination and limit work to removable components that your agreement permits. Ask the landlord or property manager to repair fixed wiring. Do not create concealed splices or damage the wall without permission.

Electrical safety

Network wiring is low voltage, but its route may share a cavity with electrical wiring. Stop if a cable appears hot, energized, damaged, or mixed with mains wiring. Avoid drilling or cutting until the route is understood, use low-voltage mounting hardware, and call a qualified professional when the wall cavity is uncertain.

Which tools make sense?

Situation Suitable purchase or solution
One outlet with an obvious Ethernet cable Matching keystone jack, 110 punch-down tool, and inexpensive wiremap tester
Several outlets or an unlabeled panel Tester with remote, mapping, or tone-tracing capability
Access point, camera, or VoIP installation PoE-capable tester and compatible switch or injector
Finished walls or inaccessible cable Professional low-voltage installation

A cable tester is valuable because it helps separate a wall-jack fault from a patch-cable, switch-port, or in-wall-cable fault. However, do not buy a new router or Internet plan to solve a physical termination problem; those products do not repair the cable in the wall.
