To charge a home battery from excess solar power, the solar and battery equipment must be designed to work together, and the system must measure household demand accurately enough to identify surplus generation. In a typical self-consumption arrangement, solar serves the home first; only the remaining power is sent to the battery, subject to the inverter’s charging limits and the battery’s state-of-charge settings.
There is no universal “charge from excess solar” switch. The menu name, meter or current-transformer (CT) hardware, wiring, operating limits and commissioning procedure depend on the inverter, battery, firmware and local electrical rules. The reliable process is to identify every device, confirm a supported topology, install the specified measurement hardware, select the manufacturer’s documented self-use mode, configure limits and export behavior, and have the system commissioned and verified.

What “charge from excess solar” actually means
Surplus charging is a control strategy, not a separate type of battery. The control system continuously compares solar production with the electricity being used in the house. It supplies the household load first. If generation is higher than demand, the remaining power becomes available to charge the battery, up to the battery inverter’s power limit and the battery manufacturer’s permitted voltage, current and state-of-charge limits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor example, if the array is producing more power than the house is consuming, a compatible inverter can direct the difference into the battery. If the home load rises, the available charging power falls. If the battery reaches its charge limit, the remaining solar may be exported to the grid or curtailed, depending on the system’s export configuration and local rules.

Solis describes this behavior for a supported configuration as follows: “When the inverter is installed with both a battery and a CHINT meter/CTs it is able to automatically charge the battery with excess PV power, which is power left over after the home load demand has been met.” That statement applies to the Solis configuration documented on its support page, not to every inverter or battery combination. Before changing settings: identify your system
Write down the exact model and firmware information for every device. A battery that can communicate with one inverter may not be approved for another, even when both use the same nominal battery voltage. Keep the manuals and compatibility lists available for the installer.
- PV inverter: record the make, model and whether it is a grid-tied inverter, hybrid inverter or a separate charge controller.
- Battery: record the model, usable capacity stated by the manufacturer, communication method and permitted charge current or power.
- Battery inverter or hybrid inverter: identify the device that converts power and controls charging. In a DC-coupled system this is often the hybrid inverter or an integrated charge controller; in an AC-coupled system it is normally a separate inverter/charger.
- Energy meter and CTs: note the exact meter model, CT orientation and the point in the installation where it measures grid import and export. Some systems require a specified meter or CT set for automatic self-use control.
- Gateway, monitoring device and backup equipment: list any energy-management gateway, transfer switch or backup panel that affects power flow.
Do not rely on the appearance of a mobile app to identify the wiring. Open the electrical documentation or have the installer trace the arrangement. The same “battery” icon can represent very different control topologies.
Choose the supported coupling arrangement
There are two broad ways to connect solar generation to storage. The correct choice depends on the existing PV installation, the battery inverter and the backup requirements. Neither topology is universally superior.
| Arrangement | How solar reaches the battery | Important compatibility issue | Questions to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| DC-coupled | Solar is connected on the DC side through a compatible charge controller or hybrid inverter that also controls the battery. | The PV input, battery voltage range, communications and protection equipment must be approved for the specific inverter and battery. | Available charge power, treatment of an existing PV inverter, backup operation, battery reserve controls and local installation requirements. |
| AC-coupled | A grid-tied PV inverter feeds an AC bus. A compatible inverter/charger supplies loads and charges the battery from surplus AC power. | The inverter/charger and PV inverter must support the required control behavior, including frequency-shifting or micro-grid operation when islanded. | Compatibility with the existing PV inverter, meter requirements, export controls, island operation and supported battery charge power. |
DC-coupled systems
In a DC-coupled design, the solar array and battery are managed through a compatible hybrid inverter or charge controller. This can reduce conversion stages for energy that goes directly from the array into the battery, but the equipment must be designed as one supported system. The inverter’s solar input, battery interface, protection devices and communications are all part of the compatibility check.
If you are adding a battery to an existing installation, do not assume that the existing PV inverter can simply be rewired onto the battery’s DC terminals. Voltage ranges, isolation, protection and control protocols must match the equipment documentation. Any change to DC wiring should be designed and installed by a qualified professional.

AC-coupled systems
In an AC-coupled design, the PV inverter remains an AC source and a separate inverter/charger manages the battery. During normal operation, solar power can serve household loads and the surplus can be used to charge the battery. During a grid outage, however, the inverter/charger may need to create a stable micro-grid and regulate the grid-tied PV inverter.

Connecting two AC devices does not prove that they can safely regulate one another. Check the supported inverter list and the documented configuration before purchasing or wiring equipment. Victron AC-coupling and the Factor 1.0 rule
Confirm the meter or CT arrangement
The controller cannot reliably identify “excess” unless it knows both solar generation and household or grid power flow. Depending on the system, that information may come from an internal meter, an external energy meter, current transformers, or a combination of measurements.
Why the measurement point matters
A meter installed at the wrong point can make the system misinterpret import as export or export as household consumption. CTs also have an orientation and a phase association. On a multi-phase installation, each phase must be measured and connected as the manufacturer specifies. A reversed CT can produce apparently impossible readings, such as the app showing export while the house is importing.
Use only specified hardware
Some inverter manufacturers require a particular meter or CT kit for automatic self-use operation. Solis, for example, documents automatic excess-PV charging with a compatible CHINT meter/CT arrangement in the referenced use case. The exact meter model, wiring terminals and firmware support must be checked against your inverter documentation. Do not substitute a visually similar meter or generic CT without written compatibility information.

Have the installer verify polarity and phase mapping
Meter installation involves live electrical conductors and should be completed by a qualified electrician or other professional permitted in your jurisdiction. During commissioning, the installer should compare the meter’s import and export readings with a controlled change in household load and with the inverter’s displayed values. Ask for the final meter model, CT orientation and single-line diagram to be recorded with the handover documents.

Set the operating mode for surplus charging
Manufacturers use different labels, but the relevant mode is usually called self-use, self-consumption, home consumption or a similar term. The mode should prioritize household demand and then charge the battery from remaining solar production. Do not give a universal button sequence: menu names and permissions change by model and firmware.
- Open the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model. Confirm that the battery, meter and inverter combination is listed as supported.
- Locate the energy-management or battery operating-mode menu. Select the documented self-use or self-consumption mode rather than a time-of-use or forced-charge mode unless your tariff strategy specifically requires it.
- Assign the correct meter or CT source. If the inverter offers several meter locations, choose the one that measures the whole-home or grid connection point described in the wiring diagram.
- Enable solar-to-battery charging. Some systems expose this as a battery-charge source, surplus-PV setting or charge-priority option. Use the wording and procedure in the model manual.
- Save the configuration and allow the system to restart if required. Do not interrupt a firmware update or power-cycle equipment in an order that the manufacturer prohibits.
- Review the live power-flow screen. Confirm that the displayed PV, household load, battery charge and grid-flow values respond plausibly when loads change.
If the system has a separate energy-management controller, set the mode there rather than making conflicting changes in two interfaces. A gateway may override settings made locally on the inverter.
Configure battery limits and reserve settings
Battery charging must remain inside the limits stated by the battery maker and the inverter documentation. Do not copy a generic charge current, charge rate or storage percentage from another installation. The permitted value depends on the battery model, number of modules, temperature, firmware and wiring.
Charge power and current
Set the maximum charge power or current to the lower limit required by the battery and inverter. The battery-management system may reduce charging automatically when the cells are cold, hot, nearly full or reporting a protection condition. The app’s instantaneous charging value can therefore be lower than the configured maximum.
Maximum state of charge
The maximum state-of-charge setting determines how close to full the system will charge during sunny periods. Use the battery maker’s recommended operating range. A maximum value below 100% may be appropriate where the manufacturer specifies it, but the correct setting is model-specific.
Backup reserve
A reserve state of charge keeps energy available for a grid outage. Increasing the reserve leaves less capacity for daily solar shifting; reducing it can provide more everyday use but less outage energy. Set the reserve according to the backup loads, expected outage needs and the battery manufacturer’s operating guidance.

Grid charging policy
Self-use mode does not necessarily mean that grid charging is disabled. Some systems allow grid charging on a schedule, during a low tariff or when the reserve must be restored. If the goal is to charge only from solar surplus, review and disable any grid-charge schedule that conflicts with that objective, subject to local rules and the equipment manual.

Decide what happens to solar after the battery is full
Once the battery reaches its configured maximum state of charge, charging must stop or taper. The remaining solar power has to go somewhere. Depending on the inverter and grid connection, it may be exported, used by a controllable load or curtailed by reducing PV production.
- Export: surplus power flows to the grid if export is permitted and the system is configured within the approved limit.
- Export limiting: a meter or controller reduces export to a configured ceiling, which may be zero or a jurisdictional limit.
- Curtailment: the inverter reduces PV output when the battery is full and export is unavailable or restricted.
Check the export permission, export limit and anti-islanding requirements with the installer and network operator. A zero-export setting does not mean that all solar will always be captured; when the battery is full or unable to charge, the PV inverter may curtail production.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Commissioning and verification checklist
Configuration should be followed by a documented commissioning check. The installer is responsible for electrical tests and any measurements required by local rules. A homeowner can observe the monitoring display and report unexpected behavior, but should not remove covers or probe live conductors.
- Confirm device identity. Check that the inverter app and gateway show the installed model numbers and that the battery communication status is normal.
- Check the meter direction. With the home using power and the array producing, verify that import, export and load readings change in the expected direction.
- Observe a surplus period. When PV production exceeds household demand, verify that the battery charge power rises rather than the system importing from the grid.
- Change a safe household load. Switching a known load on or off should change the displayed home demand and adjust the surplus available for charging.
- Check the battery limits. Confirm that the displayed charge power, maximum state of charge and reserve agree with the approved configuration.
- Check full-battery behavior. When the battery reaches its limit, confirm whether the system exports or curtails according to the approved export setting.
- Record the result. Keep the final settings, single-line diagram, meter details, firmware versions and installer commissioning report.
Do not judge performance from a single cloudy interval. Solar output and household demand change continuously, and the inverter may deliberately delay or taper charging near a limit. The useful test is whether the measured power-flow directions and control responses match the documented design.

Troubleshooting: when the battery does not charge from surplus solar
The battery remains idle while the app shows solar production
- Check whether household demand is consuming all generation. Surplus exists only after the home load is served.
- Confirm that the operating mode is self-use or self-consumption, not standby, backup-only, timed charge or forced discharge.
- Check the battery state of charge, reserve and maximum-charge settings.
- Look for a battery communication, temperature or protection alarm.
- Verify that the inverter is receiving a valid meter or CT reading.
The app shows export when the house is consuming power
- Ask the installer to verify CT orientation, phase mapping and meter location.
- Check whether the monitoring app labels import and export from the grid’s perspective or the inverter’s perspective.
- Confirm that a gateway or second meter is not supplying conflicting data.
The battery charges from the grid instead of solar
- Review time-of-use schedules, minimum state-of-charge recovery and emergency-reserve settings.
- Check whether a commissioning or forced-charge mode is still active.
- Confirm that grid charging is permitted or disabled as intended by the system design.
The battery charges, but solar is still curtailed or exported
- Compare the surplus power with the battery inverter’s maximum charge power.
- Check whether the battery is near its maximum state of charge or temporarily limited by temperature or protection logic.
- Review the export limit and the inverter’s response when the battery reaches its limit.
AC-coupled charging fails during a grid outage
Normal grid-connected charging does not prove that an AC-coupled system can operate while islanded. The PV inverter must be compatible with the inverter/charger’s micro-grid and frequency-control behavior, and the required assistants or settings must be installed. Have the installer compare the configuration with the manufacturer’s AC-coupling guide rather than changing frequency or protection settings yourself.
Safety, approvals and installer responsibilities
Battery systems combine high-energy DC circuits, AC mains, communications and, in some installations, backup switching. Installation, protection, isolation, earthing, fire clearances, labeling and grid connection must comply with the equipment instructions and the rules that apply where the property is located.
- Use a qualified installer authorized to work on the relevant electrical equipment.
- Obtain any required network-operator approval before enabling export or backup operation.
- Do not bypass a battery-management-system alarm, protection device or interlock.
- Do not alter CT wiring, inverter protection settings or islanding controls without the manufacturer’s procedure and a qualified person.
- Keep the emergency shutdown instructions and equipment manuals accessible to occupants and responders.
A professional commissioning record should identify the installed topology, approved battery and inverter combination, meter or CT model, export setting, reserve setting and test results. If the installer cannot explain where household power is measured or which device controls charging, stop before changing settings and request a wiring diagram.

If you are choosing between a retrofit and a new hybrid installation, compare the whole system rather than the battery’s capacity alone.
| Comparison point | Why it affects surplus charging |
|---|---|
| Compatibility with the existing PV inverter | Determines whether the battery can be added without replacing the PV inverter and whether backup operation is supported. |
| Meter or CT requirement | Determines how the controller measures household demand and whether a specified external meter must be installed. |
| Maximum battery charge power | Sets how much surplus can be stored at one time; excess above that limit may be exported or curtailed. |
| Backup and island behavior | Determines whether solar can continue operating during an outage and whether AC-coupled frequency control is supported. |
| Export controls | Determines whether surplus is exported, limited or curtailed after the battery reaches its limit. |
| Reserve and self-consumption options | Determines how much energy is held for outages versus used for daily load shifting. |
| Local installation requirements | Determines approvals, protective equipment, inspection and commissioning obligations. |
Ask for the proposed single-line diagram and the manufacturer compatibility references before signing off on the equipment. A statement that two products “work on AC” is not enough evidence of supported control behavior.
What a correctly configured system should show
During a sunny period with the battery below its configured maximum and the house using less power than the array produces, the monitoring system should show PV generation serving the home and a battery-charge flow for the measured surplus. If a large appliance starts, the household-load value should rise and the battery-charge value should fall accordingly. When the battery reaches its limit, the system should follow its documented export or curtailment behavior.
Those observations confirm the intended control sequence, but they do not replace electrical commissioning or a manufacturer-approved test. If readings do not follow the expected direction, contact the installer with the time, operating mode, state of charge and screenshots rather than repeatedly changing settings.

Set up surplus-solar charging by matching the PV inverter, battery and battery inverter to a supported DC- or AC-coupled design; install the specified meter or CTs; select the documented self-use mode; set battery, reserve and export limits from the equipment manuals; and verify the power-flow readings during real solar production. The exact procedure is model- and jurisdiction-specific, so a qualified installer should perform the wiring, commissioning and any changes to protection or grid-export settings.
