For most Samsung refrigerators covered by Samsung’s U.S. and Canada guidance, set the fridge to 38°F (3°C) and the freezer to -2°F (-19°C). These targets provide a margin below food-safety limits: keep refrigerated food below 40°F (4°C) and frozen food at or below 0°F (-18°C). Controls vary by model, so follow your refrigerator’s manual if it specifies different settings.
Set the recommended temperature for your model
Samsung’s typical recommendation in its U.S. and Canada guidance is 38°F (3°C) for the refrigerator and -2°F (-19°C) for the freezer. The food-storage thresholds are different from those setpoints: Samsung’s U.S. guidance attributes the below-40°F and at-or-below-0°F thresholds to USDA, while Samsung Canada attributes its below-4°C and below–18°C recommendations to Health Canada. These are typical settings, not a universal prescription. Samsung says recommendations and panel layouts can differ by model; use the owner’s manual when its instructions differ. A displayed setpoint is a target, not necessarily the temperature at that moment inside the compartment.
Change the setting using your refrigerator’s controls
Identify the control style on the refrigerator and use the corresponding steps. Samsung’s instructions note that exact behavior varies by model; consult the manual for your unit. See Samsung’s temperature-control instructions.

Separate Fridge and Freezer buttons
Press the Fridge or Freezer button repeatedly to cycle through that compartment’s available settings. On many models, each press changes the temperature by one degree or one bar; some panels cycle from the lowest setting back to the highest. On supported models, continuing through the options may reach Power Cool. Check the manual to confirm how your panel cycles.
Arrow buttons and an O or confirm button
- Use the left or right arrow to highlight Fridge, Freezer, or FlexZone.
- Press O or the confirm button to open the selected compartment.
- Use the arrows to choose the desired temperature, then press O or confirm to save it.
Family Hub or touchscreen models
Samsung’s U.S. instructions say supported Family Hub models can be adjusted through SmartThings; older Family Hub models may use Fridge Manager. Samsung Canada describes Fridge Manager for the Family Hub models it supports. Touchscreen models may expose temperature options under Settings. App names and available controls depend on the model and region, so follow the manual and the interface for your refrigerator.

Bar displays
For models that show bars instead of degrees, Samsung recommends three lit bars for both compartments in its U.S. and Canada guidance. Use the manual if it gives a different recommendation for your model.
Convertible compartments and Power functions
Some convertible top-freezer or upright-freezer models have controls such as Freezer Convert or Fridge On/Off. Samsung’s U.S. guide says that on supported models, pressing and holding the relevant control for three seconds advances to the next mode. Use this only if your refrigerator has the named control and its manual confirms the procedure.

- INSTALLATION AND DIAGNOSIS – Disconnect refrigerator power before servicing. Inaccurate temperature readings or unstable cooling may also be caused by damaged wiring, fans, control boards or other components, so confirm the original sensor is faulty before replacement.
Power Cool and Power Freeze are available on supported models to accelerate cooling in the selected compartment; they do not replace setting the normal target temperature. A Samsung-hosted Dacor manual excerpt specifies a 50-hour Power Freeze run for that particular model only, and says it increases energy consumption. Do not assume that duration applies to other Samsung refrigerators.
Allow the refrigerator to reach the new target
After changing a setting, avoid repeatedly adjusting it before the compartments have had time to respond. Samsung U.S. recommends waiting 28 hours before rechecking after an adjustment. Samsung Canada says the display may take up to four hours to update and the interior may take up to 28 hours to stabilize when doors remain closed. Minimize door openings during that stabilization period.

Check the actual compartment temperature
A refrigerator thermometer is an optional way to verify the temperature; the panel may show the target while the actual compartment temperature is still changing. Samsung notes that temperatures vary by location: the back and bottom tend to be colder, and opening the door lets warmer air in.
- For the refrigerator: Put a thermometer in a glass of water near the center of the compartment.
- For the freezer: Place the thermometer between frozen packages. Do not put it in water, because the glass can shatter.
- Leave the doors closed: Samsung says a useful reading may take up to eight hours.
- Respond to a high reading: If the refrigerator reads above 40°F or the freezer above 0°F, lower the setting and wait 28 hours before checking again.
These readings are meaningful only after allowing for the location of the thermometer, door openings, and the time needed for the appliance to stabilize. Samsung’s U.S. temperature guidance explains the measurement procedure at samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00080450/.

If it still seems too warm
Before treating a warm reading as a repair problem, check the conditions that can interfere with cooling:
- Make sure the door closes fully and that food or other items are not obstructing the seal.
- Do not pack shelves so tightly that food blocks air vents.
- Clear dust from ventilation areas and condenser coils.
- If cooling remains poor after the temperature has had time to stabilize, consult the model manual or contact Samsung support. Changing the setpoint is not a repair for a persistent cooling fault.

For firmer or softer ice cream
Samsung says ice cream can be kept colder for a firmer texture. Its U.S. guidance says not to set the freezer below 0°F when a softer result is preferred. Store ice cream away from the freezer door, where warmer air enters during openings. This texture preference is separate from the general recommended freezer target, so choose based on the model guidance and the result you want.
