How to Secure Smart-Home Devices and Protect Your Privacy

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with your router, then work inward. A secure smart home uses WPA3 Personal (or WPA2 Personal when WPA3 is unavailable), unique administrator and Wi-Fi passwords, current firmware, an enabled firewall, and separate networks where appropriate. After the network is hardened, inventory every connected device, replace factory credentials, enable multifactor authentication, install updates, and turn off features and data access you do not need. Finally, review privacy controls by device type and reset equipment whenever ownership changes.

Menus and capabilities differ by router, manufacturer, model, country, and software version. Use the current instructions from your internet provider or device maker for the exact labels, and disconnect products that no longer receive security updates or cannot be configured safely.

Why the router comes first

Your router is the traffic junction for televisions, cameras, speakers, locks, thermostats, appliances, phones, and computers. A weak Wi-Fi password, obsolete encryption, or an exposed router administration page can put many devices at risk at once. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) therefore place home-network security ahead of individual-device settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Work through the following order. It prevents you from spending time on a camera or speaker while leaving the network that carries its traffic on default settings.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  1. Secure the home Wi-Fi and router administration.
  2. Identify every connected device and its owner account.
  3. Harden credentials, multifactor authentication, firmware, and unused features.
  4. Review collection and access separately for TVs, cameras, voice assistants, and other devices.
  5. Schedule maintenance and remove unsupported equipment.
  6. Erase accounts and personal information before a device changes hands.

Step 1: Secure the home Wi-Fi

Use WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal

Open the router’s wireless or Wi-Fi security page and select WPA3 Personal when the router and your devices support it. If WPA3 is not available, use WPA2 Personal. Do not leave the network open or use obsolete encryption modes. If the router cannot offer WPA2 or WPA3 after installing its available updates, the FTC advises considering a replacement.

Some routers offer a compatibility mode that supports WPA3 and WPA2 clients together. Use the manufacturer’s documented mode when older legitimate devices cannot join WPA3-only Wi-Fi. Avoid weakening the entire network merely to keep an obsolete device connected; replace or isolate that device instead when practical.

Replace both default passwords

Change the password for the router’s administrator interface and the password used to join Wi-Fi. These are different credentials and should be different from each other. Use long, unique passwords that you do not reuse for email, shopping, or any device account. Store them in a reputable password manager or another secure method so you are not tempted to reuse a short password.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change the network name (SSID) if it reveals your address, family name, router model, or other information. Hiding the SSID is not a substitute for encryption and a strong password; focus on the security setting first.

Update the router and enable its firewall

Check the administration interface for firmware or security updates. Some internet providers install updates automatically; verify the update status rather than assuming it happened. Install updates according to the maker’s instructions, allow the router to restart, and confirm that Wi-Fi and any required services return afterward.

Make sure the router’s firewall is enabled. The exact name and location vary, and an advanced firewall page may include separate IPv4 and IPv6 controls. Do not change advanced filtering rules unless you understand the effect on devices you need. When finished, sign out of the administrator interface, especially on a shared computer.

Turn off unnecessary exposure features

Remote administration, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) can be convenient, but each can increase exposure when it is not needed. The FTC recommends turning them off when you do not use them.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Remote administration: Disable administration from the internet unless you have a specific, well-understood need and a secure alternative.
  • WPS: Turn it off after setup, particularly if you do not use its pairing function.
  • UPnP: Disable it when no device or application requires automatic port configuration. If a device stops working, check its documentation before re-enabling the feature.

Feature names and defaults differ by model. Record any exception you make so you can revisit it during a later security check.

Create guest and camera networks

Enable a guest network for visitors when your router supports it. Guests then do not need the main Wi-Fi password, and a compromised guest device has less opportunity to reach computers and other devices on the primary network. Give the guest network its own password and confirm that the router’s guest settings prevent access to local devices when that option is available.

Consider placing internet-connected cameras on a separate network from computers and printers. This can limit movement between groups if one device is compromised, but isolation behavior is model-dependent. Read the router’s instructions to confirm whether guest isolation, VLANs, or another separation feature actually blocks the traffic you intend to block. A separate network is not a replacement for camera updates and strong account security.

Step 2: Inventory every connected device

Use the router’s connected-device, client, or DHCP-client list to see what is currently on the network. Names may be vague, such as a chipset maker or a string of letters and numbers. Match each entry to a physical device by temporarily turning a device off, checking its network details, or using the manufacturer’s app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep an inventory that includes the room, device type, manufacturer and model, owner account, companion-app account, firmware version, last update date, network assignment, and whether the product still receives security support. Include equipment that is easy to forget: printers, streaming boxes, heating controls, plugs, bulbs, robot vacuums, garage controllers, and old hubs.

For every entry you cannot identify, investigate before allowing it to remain connected. Change the Wi-Fi password if an unknown device may have been given access, then reconnect known devices with the new credential. Remove devices that are broken, abandoned, or no longer needed rather than leaving them online indefinitely.

Step 3: Harden each device and account

Replace factory credentials

Open the device’s settings and its cloud or mobile-app account. Change any factory username or password, including credentials for a local web page, hub, or bridge. Use a separate password for every account. A unique password limits damage if another service suffers a password leak.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable multifactor authentication

Turn on two-factor or multifactor authentication wherever the manufacturer offers it, especially for accounts that can view cameras, unlock doors, control heating, access email, or make purchases. Prefer an authenticator application or security key when the service supports one; otherwise use the strongest available method. Save recovery codes securely and update the recovery email or phone number so you can regain access without weakening the account.

Install firmware and app updates

Update the device firmware and the companion phone or tablet app. Firmware fixes the product itself; an outdated app can also expose account or control functions. Check whether automatic updates are available and understand whether they require the device to be online at a particular time.

Keep the inventory’s support status current. A product that no longer receives security updates may become an unmanaged entry point even if it still works. Disconnect it, replace it, or place it on a network with the least access possible when its exposure cannot be adequately controlled.

Disable unused functions and access

Turn off remote management, internet access, voice control, cloud sharing, microphones, radios, integrations, and other capabilities that you do not use. Remove old household members, installers, contractors, and third-party applications from the device account. Review linked services after changing a password because a previously authorized integration may retain access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not disable a function blindly if it is required for safety or operation. For example, a heating controller may need cloud access for a service you rely on. Document the exception, limit the account that can use it, and reassess it periodically.

Step 4: Review privacy by device type

Security controls prevent unauthorized access; privacy controls determine what an authorized device collects, stores, and shares. Review both on every product. The FTC and CISA emphasize that available settings differ, so confirm behavior in the current privacy policy and device instructions.

Device type Privacy checks Access checks
Smart TV or streaming display Review advertising, viewing-history, voice, and tracking controls; remove apps you do not use. Review signed-in accounts, app permissions, casting access, and any list of connected devices.
Security camera or doorbell Choose placement carefully; avoid bedrooms and other spaces where recording would be inappropriate; review retention and sharing settings. Inspect access logs for unfamiliar addresses or unusual times; enable multifactor authentication; update software; reconsider internet remote viewing.
Voice assistant or smart speaker Learn how recordings are stored and deleted; use the physical mute control where available; review history and voice-training settings. Restrict voice purchasing and access to email or calendars; review household members and linked services; protect the account with multifactor authentication.
Other connected appliance Limit optional diagnostics, location, contacts, and third-party data sharing to what the function requires. Remove unused users and integrations; disable remote control if you do not need it; keep firmware and the app current.

Smart TVs

Open the TV’s privacy, advertising, or viewing-data menu. Turn off tracking and personalized features you do not want, and uninstall unused apps. Check the account signed into the TV and remove accounts belonging to former occupants or guests. Revisit these choices after a major software update because menu labels and defaults can change.

Cameras and doorbells

Place cameras so they capture only the area needed for safety. Avoid bedrooms and other private spaces, and tell household members and visitors what is recorded. Internet remote viewing is convenient but expands the number of places from which a camera can be reached; leave it off if you do not need it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the camera’s access or activity log for unfamiliar addresses, devices, or times. Investigate before dismissing an entry: a household member may be traveling or using a new phone. Remove unknown users, change the account password, revoke third-party access, and enable multifactor authentication. Keep the camera and app updated, and check recording retention and sharing settings.

Voice assistants

Learn when the assistant records, where recordings are stored, how to delete them, and whether recordings are used to improve the service. Use a physical microphone-mute control when available, particularly during sensitive conversations. Review the account’s household members and linked services, and limit access to email, calendars, contacts, or other personal information to what you actually need.

Disable or protect voice purchasing. Require a PIN or another confirmation step, or turn purchasing off entirely if it is unnecessary. Multifactor authentication on the associated account protects these settings as well as the assistant itself.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Step 5: Maintain the setup

Smart-home security is a continuing task rather than a one-time installation. Put a recurring review on your calendar and repeat it after moving, changing internet providers, adding a household member, or installing a major app update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Monthly: Check router notifications, connected-device lists, camera access logs, and account security alerts.
  • Quarterly: Check router, device, and app update status; remove unused apps, integrations, and users; review guest-network credentials.
  • After a security notice: Change the affected account password, revoke sessions and tokens where offered, install the relevant update, and inspect connected-device activity.
  • At purchase: Confirm the product has a clear update and support policy, supports strong account authentication, and lets you control the data and features it requires.

When a device is unsupported and cannot be isolated or configured with reasonable safeguards, disconnect it. Continued operation is not worth leaving an unmanaged device on a network that also carries sensitive work, financial, or household information.

When you need a new router

Replace the router if it cannot provide WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal after available updates, no longer receives security updates, or lacks the network controls your household needs. Do not choose solely by advertised speed. Compare the security and management capabilities that affect your devices.

Capability What to verify
Wireless security WPA3 Personal, or at minimum WPA2 Personal, with a documented compatibility mode if older devices require it.
Update support A stated process for firmware updates and a support period that covers the expected life of the installation.
Firewall An enabled, configurable firewall for the router’s supported network protocols.
Network separation Guest networking and, where needed, a way to isolate cameras or other device groups from computers and printers.
Administration Ability to change administrator credentials, disable remote management, WPS, and UPnP, and review connected clients.

Router interfaces change over time, and a feature described as “guest Wi-Fi” may not provide full device isolation. Read the technical documentation before purchase and confirm the behavior after installation.

Changing ownership: selling, giving away, or moving into a home

For the person handing over a device

  1. List every connected product, hub, sensor, camera, and accessory being transferred.
  2. Remove other users, administrators, household members, shared keys, and third-party integrations.
  3. Sign out of the device and its companion app, cancel or transfer any associated service, and remove stored payment, email, location, and household information.
  4. Change or cancel account access that will not belong to the new owner. Do not leave your Wi-Fi password or cloud credentials with the equipment.
  5. Perform the manufacturer’s factory reset. Confirm that the setup screen appears and that your account is no longer shown.
  6. Provide the new owner with model information and honest details about update support, known limitations, and any subscription needed for normal operation.

A factory reset is essential, but it may not cancel a cloud account automatically. Verify account removal separately in the service’s current instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the new owner

  1. Factory-reset every inherited device before connecting it to your network, even if the previous owner says it was reset.
  2. Set up the product with your own email address, password, recovery methods, and multifactor authentication.
  3. Review mobile-app permissions, household members, linked services, recordings, purchase settings, and data-sharing choices.
  4. Install current firmware and app updates, then check whether the product remains supported and whether a warranty or service plan transfers.
  5. Place cameras and microphones deliberately, and assign the device to the appropriate guest or camera network.

Troubleshooting common problems

An older device will not join WPA3 Wi-Fi

Confirm whether the router supports a documented WPA3/WPA2 compatibility mode and whether the device has a firmware update. If it still cannot use a secure mode, do not downgrade the entire network without considering the risk. Replace the device or isolate it on a network with no unnecessary access, following the router maker’s instructions.

You cannot identify a connected-device entry

Compare the entry’s MAC address or hostname with each device’s network information, then power devices off one at a time and refresh the router list. Check hubs and repeaters, which may represent several products under one name. If the entry remains unknown, change the Wi-Fi password and reconnect only devices you recognize.

A privacy setting is missing

Check whether the control belongs to the device, its mobile app, or the online account. Update the firmware and app, look for an advanced or account-level privacy page, and consult the current manufacturer documentation. If the product cannot provide a control you consider necessary, disable the related feature, disconnect it, or replace it.

Turning off UPnP or remote access breaks a service

Identify which device or application depended on the feature before turning it back on. Look for a safer supported configuration, such as local control or a specific documented port rule. If you must restore a convenience feature, limit it to the smallest scope, record the exception, and review it after the service or device is updated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
