Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Find the leak before choosing a material. Use weatherstripping where a sash or door moves, an appropriate caulk at a stationary crack, and low-expansion window-and-door foam or backer rod for suitable gaps between a unit and its rough opening. Then test the repair again. A draft near a window does not prove that windows are your home’s largest energy leak; major losses can also be hidden in attics and basements.
Diagnose the draft before you seal it
A cold sensation can come from air leakage, a cold surface, or both. Sealing the wrong joint can stop a window from operating, block drainage, trap moisture, or leave the actual leak untouched. Start by identifying the exact path while the window or door is closed.

Use a paper test on a closed sash or door
Place a sheet of paper across the seal, close the window or door, and try to pull the paper out. If it slides out easily or the paper moves noticeably, the gasket or weatherstripping may not be making adequate contact. Test several points around the perimeter rather than assuming one result represents the whole opening. A loose result can indicate worn weatherstripping, a poor fit, or a sash or door that is not closing squarely.
Look and feel for gaps
Inspect the interior and exterior trim, corners, meeting rails, hinges, and threshold. Visible cracks around trim are possible leakage points. On a windy day, move a hand slowly along the closed unit to detect a temperature change or moving air, then mark each location with removable tape. A bright light on one side of a darkened opening can reveal a visible gap, but the absence of visible light does not prove the assembly is airtight.

Use a smoke check carefully
A smoke pencil or a thin smoke source can show air movement at a suspected joint. Turn off combustion appliances before performing a smoke-test procedure, because air movement can affect combustion and draft conditions. Keep smoke away from finishes and follow the equipment instructions. These checks screen for likely leaks; they are not a substitute for a complete home energy assessment. If you suspect backdrafting, combustion problems, or widespread leakage, stop and consult a qualified home-energy professional.
Match the repair to the joint
The location and movement of the joint determine the correct repair. The table below is a decision guide, not a product ranking.
| Leak location | Typical material | Access and difficulty | Critical checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moving edge of an operable sash or door | Compatible weatherstripping | Surface work; usually low to moderate | Profile, dimensions, compression, and continued operation |
| Stationary crack at casing, trim, or frame | Caulk or sealant suited to the joint and exposure | Surface work; usually low | Do not seal a movement joint or a drainage path; prepare a clean, dry surface |
| Gap between the unit and rough framing behind removable trim | Low-expansion foam designated for windows and doors, caulk, or foam backer rod as appropriate | Trim removal; moderate to difficult | Confirm the leak first, avoid bowing the frame, and preserve drainage |
| Large or irregular void, damaged framing, or moisture intrusion | Repair designed for the assembly, often with professional assessment | Variable; potentially high | Find and correct the water or structural problem before closing the gap |
There is no single caulk or sealant that is right for every use. Select a product whose label matches the substrate, joint size, interior or exterior exposure, and expected movement.

Seal moving parts with weatherstripping
Weatherstripping is designed to seal components that must move independently. It is the normal first repair for a leaky operable window sash or a door that closes against a jamb or stop.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Inspect the existing seal
Look for crushed, torn, brittle, detached, or flattened material. Check the full perimeter, including the corners where strips meet. A seal that touches in one area but leaves a gap elsewhere may be the wrong profile, incorrectly installed, or affected by a misaligned sash or door.
Measure and select a compatible profile
Measure the length of each run and the width and depth available for the replacement. Match the replacement to the channel, kerf, adhesive surface, or fastener arrangement used by the opening. No one weatherstripping profile fits every window or door. Follow the selected product’s dimensions and installation directions rather than forcing an oversized strip into a narrow channel.
Install without preventing operation
- Clean dust, old adhesive, and loose material from the contact surface. Allow it to dry.
- Cut each piece to the measured length, making neat joints at corners.
- Install the strip in the specified orientation, keeping it straight and fully seated.
- Close and open the window or door several times. It should latch without unusual force, rubbing, or springing back open.
- Repeat the paper test at several points. If the seal is too tight, the unit may be difficult to operate or the frame may be stressed; if it is still loose, reassess the profile, alignment, and leak location.
Do not caulk over a moving sash, hinge line, latch edge, or door sweep that must flex. Those areas need a replaceable, moving seal.
Caulk stationary cracks at trim and frames
Caulk is for a suitable stationary joint between materials that do not move independently. Common examples include a crack where exterior casing meets siding or where interior trim meets a frame, provided that the joint is not intended to drain water or accommodate movement.

Prepare the joint
- Remove loose, failed caulk and debris without damaging the finish.
- Make sure the joint is dry and that any underlying rot, masonry damage, or water entry has been addressed.
- Check the joint width and depth against the caulk label. A deep or wide gap may need backer material rather than a thick bead.
- Mask adjacent surfaces if a clean edge is important.
Apply and tool the bead
- Cut the nozzle for a bead sized to the joint, not a large blob that bridges both surfaces poorly.
- Run a continuous bead while maintaining contact with both sides of the stationary crack.
- Tool the bead according to the product instructions and remove masking before the sealant skins.
- Respect the stated cure time before exposing exterior work to rain or before painting.
Never use caulk to close a weep hole, sill drainage route, or other opening that is designed to let trapped water escape. If the joint moves seasonally, choose a sealant rated for that movement or use a different detail; a rigid, unsuitable bead can crack and recreate the leak.
Seal a rough-opening gap behind removable trim
Air can bypass an otherwise intact sash when the gap is between the window or door unit and the rough framing. This is a different repair from replacing sash weatherstripping. The work may require removing interior or exterior trim, so be certain of the leak before opening the assembly.
Choose the right filler
- Low-expansion canned foam: Use only foam specifically designated for windows and doors. High-expansion foam can bow a jamb or frame and interfere with operation.
- Foam backer rod: Useful for appropriately sized, regular joints before applying a compatible sealant. Choose a diameter that fits without crushing the frame.
- Caulk: Suitable for a narrow, accessible stationary joint when the product is compatible with the materials and exposure.
Fibrous insulation alone does not air-seal a gap. As DOE Building Science Education states, “Do not rely on fibrous insulation alone to block airflow; it will not air seal.” Insulation can fill space while air continues to pass around it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWork without damaging the unit
- Confirm the suspected bypass with a paper, visual, or smoke check and mark the location.
- Remove only the trim needed to expose the joint, protecting paint and finishes.
- Inspect for wet wood, rot, missing flashing, or a path that is intended to drain water. Correct those conditions rather than burying them.
- Apply a small amount of designated low-expansion window-and-door foam, or install backer rod and sealant as the joint requires. Do not fill a cavity indiscriminately.
- Allow the material to cure, trim excess foam carefully, and reinstall the trim with its drainage and flashing details intact.
- Operate the sash or door before and after the work. A frame that binds after foaming may have been overfilled or distorted.
Because behind-trim sealing is moderate to difficult, hire qualified help if you cannot identify the rough-opening detail, safely remove and reinstall trim, or verify that water management remains intact.

A complete pre-winter sealing sequence
- Choose the inspection conditions. A windy day makes air movement easier to detect. Close the window or door and remove curtains or furniture that obscure the perimeter.
- Map the leaks. Use the paper test, visual inspection, and—after turning off combustion appliances—a careful smoke check. Mark whether each leak is at a moving edge, a stationary trim joint, or behind the trim.
- Check alignment and hardware. A loose hinge, latch, strike, or sash lock can prevent a gasket from compressing. Correct obvious hardware or alignment problems before installing a thicker seal.
- Replace failed weatherstripping. Measure the opening, select a compatible profile, install it continuously, and verify smooth closing and latching.
- Caulk suitable stationary cracks. Prepare a clean, dry joint, use a sealant matched to the materials and exposure, and leave movement and drainage paths open.
- Address confirmed rough-opening bypasses. Remove trim only when necessary. Use designated low-expansion window-and-door foam, backer rod, or an appropriate sealant; never assume loose fibrous insulation is an air barrier.
- Verify the result. Repeat the same test at the same points, then check operation, latch engagement, and any nearby sill or weep path.
- Broaden the investigation if needed. Persistent drafts may originate in attic bypasses, basement rim areas, crawl spaces, or duct penetrations rather than the window or door. Consider a professional energy assessment when leaks are extensive or uncertain.
Common failure modes and fixes
The new weatherstrip makes the door hard to close
The profile may be too thick, installed in the wrong orientation, or compressing against an out-of-square frame. Remove and compare the dimensions with the product instructions, inspect hinges and the strike, and avoid shaving the strip until the underlying fit is understood.
Caulk peels or cracks soon after application
Contamination, dampness, an incompatible substrate, an oversized bead, or movement beyond the sealant’s rating can cause failure. Remove the failed material, let the joint dry, and choose a product rated for the actual materials, width, and movement. Do not cover a wet or damaged joint.
Foam seals the gap but the sash binds
Expansion may have pushed the frame inward. Stop forcing the sash, remove trim as needed to assess the cured foam, and have a qualified repairer correct a distorted frame. Use only designated low-expansion foam in future work and apply it sparingly.
The draft remains after surface sealing
Recheck the exact entry point. The leak may be behind the trim, at a threshold, through a door sweep, or elsewhere in the building. A window-side sensation can also be caused by a cold pane or wall surface rather than an open air path. Do not keep adding sealant without locating the bypass.

Tools and materials to have ready
- Paper strips, removable tape, and a flashlight for locating and marking leaks
- A smoke pencil or equivalent test source, used only with combustion appliances turned off and with appropriate caution
- Measuring tape and a profile or channel sample for selecting weatherstripping
- Replacement weatherstripping compatible with the specific sash or door
- Caulk or sealant matched to the joint, substrate, exposure, and movement
- Caulking gun, cleaning supplies, masking tape, and a tooling method recommended by the sealant manufacturer
- Foam backer rod where the joint calls for it
- Low-expansion spray foam labeled for windows and doors when a confirmed rough-opening gap requires foam
- Basic trim-removal and reinstallation tools if you are qualified to expose the rough opening
Material names alone are not enough. Read the label for compatibility, application temperature, cure time, joint dimensions, and whether painting or exterior exposure is allowed.
When sealing windows and doors is not the whole answer
ENERGY STAR notes that major air leaks in many homes are hidden in attics and basements. If several openings have drafts, rooms remain uncomfortable after repairs, or heating equipment shows combustion or drafting symptoms, an assessment of the whole envelope is more useful than repeatedly treating one window.
ENERGY STAR’s broader estimate is an average 15% reduction in heating and cooling costs, or an average 11% reduction in total energy costs, from air sealing combined with adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and basements. These are whole-home program estimates, not a measured savings promise for sealing windows and doors alone. The same guidance says nine out of ten U.S. homes are under-insulated; that statistic concerns insulation broadly, not window leakage.
Plan a final winter check
After the first severe weather, inspect the repaired locations again. Confirm that weatherstripping still contacts evenly, caulk remains bonded, doors latch, windows operate, and no drainage opening has been blocked. If a new gap appears, record whether it follows movement, moisture, or building settlement; that clue points to a different repair than simply applying another bead.
