How to Seal Drafts Around Windows and Doors: Find the Leak and Use the Right Repair

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Seal a draft according to the joint that is leaking: use weatherstripping where a sash or door moves, caulk for a stationary crack, and low-expansion window-and-door foam, caulk, or backer rod for a suitable gap between the jamb and the rough opening. Start by locating the air path rather than buying a generic sealant. A paper test, visual inspection, and (when used safely) a smoke test can show whether the seal is loose, but they do not reveal every concealed leak.

Draft sealing can make a room more comfortable, yet window, door, and wall leaks generally produce less energy savings than attic air sealing and often less than basement or crawlspace work. Treat this as a targeted repair, then prioritize the largest air leaks in the rest of the house.

What a draft around a window or door usually means

Air can enter at several different interfaces that look similar from inside the room. Correct identification determines both the material and the method.

Moving joint: sash, jamb, or door edge

An operable window sash or a closed door must move freely, so its perimeter is sealed with a compressible weatherstrip. If the weatherstrip is missing, flattened, torn, too thin, or no longer contacts the opposing surface, outside air can pass through even when the unit appears closed. The U.S. Department of Energy defines the rule simply: “Weatherstripping is used to seal components that move, such as doors and operable windows.” Read the DOE guidance.

Stationary crack: frame, casing, or trim

A crack between two parts that do not move is a caulking joint. Typical examples include the inside edge of window casing, the joint between a door frame and wall finish, and a split in an old sealant bead. Caulk remains flexible enough for minor movement but is not a substitute for a door sweep or sash weatherstrip.

Concealed gap: jamb to rough opening

Behind the visible trim, the installed jamb may not be airtight to the rough framing. This gap can be narrow and hidden until casing is removed. DOE lists caulk, canned spray foam, or foam backer rod for an appropriate jamb-to-rough-opening gap. Fibrous insulation by itself does not stop airflow; DOE states, “Do not rely on fibrous insulation alone to block airflow; it will not air seal.” See the DOE rough-opening air-sealing guidance.

Diagnose the leak before buying materials

Diagnosis prevents a common mistake: filling a moving joint with rigid material or spraying foam into a gap that needs a controlled, flexible seal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close and lock the unit. A window or door must be in its normal closed position for the tests to mean anything. Inspect the entire perimeter, including corners, hinges, the meeting rail of a window, the threshold, and the junction where trim meets the wall.
  2. Look for clues. Visible daylight, dust trails, cobweb movement, peeling paint, moisture staining, pest entry, or a cold strip on a windy day can identify the path. A gap that changes when the sash or door moves is likely a weatherstripping problem.
  3. Perform the paper test. Put a sheet of paper across the seal and close the window or door on it. If the paper slides back and forth easily, the compression seal is weak at that location. Repeat at several points; one tight corner does not prove the whole perimeter is sealed. ENERGY STAR describes this check in its DIY inspection guidance.
  4. Use smoke only as a locator. A smoke pencil or incense can show movement at a seam while the unit is closed. Keep any flame or ember away from curtains, solvents, foam, and other combustibles, and follow the product’s safety instructions. Smoke movement identifies air motion; it does not tell you whether the remedy is weatherstrip, caulk, or concealed-gap sealing.
  5. Separate water problems from air leaks. Staining, soft wood, or recurring dampness may indicate flashing or drainage failure. Sealant alone will not repair a leaking roof, failed sill pan, or damaged exterior cladding.

Map each leak on a simple sketch or with removable tape. Mark whether it is on a moving edge, a fixed crack, or behind the trim. This keeps the repair sequence organized and gives you a way to retest after the work.

Complicated trim, suspected lead paint, or a leak that remains after accessible repairs Professional assessment and repair Behind-trim work is rated moderate to difficult by ENERGY STAR; homes built before 1978 may require lead-safe practices. ENERGY STAR project guidance.

Seal moving parts with weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is the first choice when the paper test fails at a sash or door edge. Remove only enough material to expose the existing seal, and note how it is retained: adhesive, kerf (a slot in the frame), screws, or a compression channel. The replacement must fit that retention method and have a thickness that closes the gap without forcing the unit.

Window sash

  1. Clean the contact surface and let it dry. Dirt can keep adhesive-backed material from bonding and can create a false gap.
  2. Measure the old strip and the channel or groove before purchasing a replacement. Do not assume every window in the house uses the same profile.
  3. Remove loose or brittle material without gouging wood, vinyl, or painted metal. For adhesive residue, use a cleaner compatible with the frame finish.
  4. Install the new strip continuously around the intended contact area, stopping where the manufacturer specifies. Butt joints neatly at corners rather than stacking material that could hold the sash open.
  5. Close and lock the sash, then repeat the paper test at the original points. The paper should resist removal, but the sash must still open and close normally.

Exterior or interior door

  1. Check the hinge side, latch side, head, and threshold separately. A door can be tight on three sides and leak at the threshold.
  2. Replace the jamb weatherstrip if the door no longer compresses it evenly. A kerf-inserted, screwed, or adhesive type must match the existing jamb design.
  3. Adjust or replace the door sweep when air enters under the slab. Set it to contact the threshold lightly; excessive pressure can make the door drag, bind, or fail to latch.
  4. Verify that the latch engages without slamming and that weatherstripping is not folded at the corners. Recheck with paper at several points.

Do not pack foam, caulk, or rigid filler into a joint that must move. If a corrected weatherstrip still leaves a draft, inspect the stationary frame-to-wall joint or the concealed rough-opening gap rather than adding more material to the moving edge.

Caulk stationary cracks and use backer rod where needed

Caulk works on a clean, dry, stable joint. Select an exterior-rated product for an outside joint exposed to weather and a product compatible with the interior surface for inside trim. The exact chemistry should follow the manufacturer’s label and the surfaces being joined; the essential distinction is that the joint is stationary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the joint

  1. Remove failing caulk, loose paint, dust, and friable material. A narrow, sound bead can sometimes be cleaned and overlaid only if the new product’s instructions permit it.
  2. Dry the joint and correct any active water intrusion before sealing. Caulk applied to a wet, dirty, or moving surface is likely to fail early.
  3. For a wide or deep crack, press in foam backer rod to create a stable, shallow sealant depth. Choose a diameter that fits without being crushed excessively.

Apply and tool the bead

  1. Cut the nozzle to produce a bead slightly wider than the crack, and puncture the inner seal if required by the cartridge.
  2. Run a continuous bead without stopping at the middle of a side. Push the caulk ahead of the nozzle so it wets both edges.
  3. Tool the bead with a suitable tool or a method allowed by the product label. Avoid smearing sealant over adjacent finishes.
  4. Allow the stated cure time before exposing an exterior joint to rain or operating a component that could pull the bead.

A backer rod is not itself a complete air seal. It controls sealant depth and supports the bead; the caulk must still contact both sides of the joint continuously.

Seal the concealed jamb-to-rough-opening gap

When smoke or a visual inspection points behind the casing, the repair becomes more involved. ENERGY STAR characterizes sealing behind window and door trim as moderate to difficult and gives a general one- to two-day DIY effort estimate; the actual time varies with trim, access, and repairs discovered after removal.

Plan the access

  1. Confirm that the leak is not solvable from the exposed frame or weatherstrip first.
  2. Score paint lines at the casing and use trim tools to remove the smallest area necessary. Label pieces so they can return to their original locations.
  3. In a home built before 1978, treat painted trim as a possible lead-paint hazard. If disturbing it would require unsafe practices or extensive removal, hire a qualified professional rather than improvising.

Select an air-sealing method

  • Low-expansion canned foam: Use only foam designated for windows and doors. High-expansion general-purpose foam can bow a jamb and interfere with sash or door operation.
  • Caulk: Appropriate for a narrow, accessible joint that can be filled continuously.
  • Foam backer rod: Useful where the gap is wider and a compressible filler can be installed without distorting the frame; it normally needs a sealant at the exposed surface.

Follow the product label for surface preparation, temperature, curing, and trimming. Keep weep paths, drainage channels, and moving hardware clear. Do not block designed sill drainage while trying to stop air.

Install without deforming the frame

  1. Clean loose debris from the gap and confirm that the jamb is straight and securely fastened.
  2. Apply foam in a controlled bead or place backer rod with light, even pressure. Leave room for expansion and curing as directed; overfilling is not an air-sealing advantage.
  3. Never drive backer rod or fibrous material so tightly that the jamb bows inward. A bent frame can make a previously working window or door bind, leak, or fail to latch.
  4. After the seal cures, trim only what is necessary, reinstall the casing, and caulk the stationary trim joint.
  5. Operate and lock the unit several times before declaring the repair complete.

If framing is rotten, the opening is badly out of square, flashing is missing, or air leakage persists around the whole assembly, the problem may be installation or water management rather than a simple seal. Use a qualified window-and-door or building-envelope professional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recheck the repair and troubleshoot failures

  • The paper still slides easily: Recheck the exact point. The replacement weatherstrip may be the wrong thickness, interrupted at a corner, or not contacting because the sash or door is misaligned.
  • The unit will not close or latch: Remove excess weatherstrip, foam, or backer rod and inspect for frame bowing. Do not force the hardware; a distorted frame needs correction before more sealing material is added.
  • A stationary bead pulls away: Remove failed material, dry and clean the joint, and verify that the selected caulk is compatible with both surfaces. Movement, moisture, or an underlying structural gap may need correction first.
  • The draft remains after accessible sealing: Test the head, sill, corners, and adjacent wall separately. Air can travel through the wall cavity and emerge at trim, so the visible cold spot is not always the entry point.
  • Condensation or odors increase: Check humidity, drainage, and ventilation. A seal cannot cure a water leak or a moisture problem.

Keep a record of the date, locations repaired, and any materials used. Seasonal temperature and wind changes can reveal a second weak point, and the record makes future maintenance easier.

Safety limits for larger air-sealing projects

Weatherstripping a single window or door is usually a small repair, but extensive whole-home air sealing changes how air moves through the building. ENERGY STAR warns that tightening a home can, in some situations, cause combustion appliances such as water heaters to backdraft. It also notes that pollutants including radon, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds can accumulate if ventilation is inadequate. For broad air-sealing work, have a qualified home-energy professional evaluate combustion safety and ventilation needs. ENERGY STAR’s problem-identification guidance explains these concerns.

Install and maintain carbon-monoxide alarms as required by local code, never disable combustion-safety equipment, and follow all foam, caulk, ladder, and paint-removal instructions. Stop work if you encounter suspected lead paint, damaged wiring, structural decay, or an appliance that is spilling combustion products.

Where draft sealing ranks for energy savings

Stopping a noticeable window or door draft can improve comfort immediately, but it is not automatically the highest-return air-sealing project. ENERGY STAR’s opportunity guidance says leaks through doors, windows, and walls generally have the least impact on energy use among the areas it compares; the attic is often the highest-potential location, with the basement or crawlspace commonly next. Climate, construction, age, and condition change the result for each house. Review the ENERGY STAR prioritization guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The agency also says sealing air leaks and adding insulation can save up to 10% on annual energy bills. That is a broad ENERGY STAR claim, with the year of the figure not stated on the page; it is not a promised result from sealing windows and doors alone. Use an assessment to identify the largest leaks before committing to extensive work.

What the measured leakage example does—and does not—prove

DOE Building Science Education reports an Oak Ridge National Laboratory Buildings Technology Center study in which leakage at a 3/4-inch rough-opening gap measured 28.2 cm²/m² before sealing and 0.5 cm²/m² after sealing. The DOE page does not state the study year. These are reported test conditions illustrating how much a rough-opening seal can reduce leakage; they are not a typical household result or a forecast of utility-bill savings. Read the DOE example in context.

Assistance and professional help

Households that meet local eligibility rules may be able to receive air-sealing or insulation assistance through their state’s Weatherization Assistance Program. Some utilities also offer rebates for assessments or selected air-sealing and insulation work. Programs, qualifying measures, and income or property requirements vary by location, so check your state weatherization office and utility before starting a project. ENERGY STAR lists these possibilities in its Seal and Insulate resources.

Hire help when trim is complex, lead paint may be disturbed, the frame is damaged or out of square, water intrusion is involved, or a whole-home project could affect combustion appliances or ventilation. A professional can test the building, identify concealed leakage, and verify safe operation after sealing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

  • Close and lock the window or door, then inspect every edge and the surrounding trim.
  • Use the paper test at multiple points; use smoke cautiously only to locate air movement.
  • Choose weatherstripping for a moving sash, slab, or door edge.
  • Choose caulk for a clean, stationary crack; add backer rod first when a wide joint requires support.
  • For a jamb-to-rough-opening gap, use low-expansion foam labeled for windows and doors, caulk, or suitable backer rod—not fibrous insulation alone.
  • Protect frame geometry, drainage paths, and normal operation while sealing.
  • Retest closure, latching, and the original leak points after the material cures.
  • Escalate complex trim, pre-1978 painted surfaces, persistent leaks, water damage, or whole-home safety questions to a qualified professional.
