“Ground bees” are not one specific insect. A few bees using separate holes in the soil may be harmless, seasonal solitary pollinators; one busy entrance defended by smooth, yellow-and-black insects may be a communal yellowjacket nest. The safest removal plan is therefore to identify the insect first, keep everyone away from the area, and use treatment only when the risk justifies it.

Follow these eight steps. If anyone on the property has a known sting allergy, the nest is hidden or inaccessible, or children and pets cannot be kept away, skip DIY treatment and arrange professional help.
1. Keep people, pets, and equipment away
Immediately establish a wide safety zone around the suspected nest. Keep away:

- Anyone who cannot identify or safely observe stinging insects
Do not kick the soil, mow over the entrance, dig into it, flood it, pour anything into it, or test whether the insects are aggressive. A disturbed yellowjacket nest can produce multiple defensive stings, and an apparently quiet opening is not proof that the nest is empty.
If the entrance is beside a doorway, walkway, driveway, children’s play area, pet run, or active construction zone, treat it as an immediate site-safety problem. Redirect traffic and secure the area rather than trying to work around the nest.
2. Watch the entrance from a safe distance
Observe the activity without approaching for a close-up. The traffic pattern is often more useful than the number of holes:
| What you observe | What it may indicate |
|---|---|
| Several small holes with a few bees appearing around each one | An aggregation of solitary ground-nesting bees |
| One entrance with many smooth, yellow-and-black insects repeatedly entering and leaving | A communal ground-nesting yellowjacket colony |
| Many nearby holes, each with individual wasp activity | A group of solitary wasps, each with its own nest |
| Bees entering a wall, tree cavity, attic, or other structure | A possible honey-bee colony or another cavity-nesting insect |
From a safe distance, take a photograph or short video only if doing so does not put you in the insects’ flight path. Send it to a local university extension office, master gardener program, entomologist, or qualified pest professional. Never catch an insect by hand or approach the opening to obtain a better image.
3. Identify the insect before selecting treatment
Identification determines whether removal is necessary and what methods are legally and practically appropriate.
Solitary ground bees
Solitary bees may be small or medium-sized and can be brown, black, or metallic green. They commonly use bare or sparsely vegetated, well-drained soil. Many females may nest close together, creating a patch covered with holes, but each bee generally provisions its own nest. The aggregation can look like a colony without being a shared, defended nest.
These bees are important pollinators. They are generally docile and often remain visible for only a few weeks in spring, although exact timing varies by species and location. They can sting, so “solitary” does not mean “impossible to sting,” but their defensive risk is usually much lower than that of a social yellowjacket colony.

Ground-nesting yellowjackets
Yellowjackets are usually smooth and relatively hairless, with yellow-and-black markings. A ground nest often occupies an abandoned rodent burrow or another cavity and has one main entrance used by many workers. The colony may contain hundreds or thousands of wasps and can be aggressively defended, especially when the entrance is disturbed.
Honey bees and solitary wasps
Do not treat honey bees as yellowjackets. If the insects appear to be honey bees or are entering a wall, tree, attic, or other cavity, contact a beekeeper or humane bee-removal service for identification and removal options. A honey-bee colony in a structure may persist for years and may require careful access and repair.
Solitary wasps can also create an aggregation of nearby holes. In that case, each female has her own nest rather than the insects sharing one communal colony. Hole count alone is not enough to identify the pest.
4. If they are solitary ground bees, prefer coexistence
If the aggregation is away from a doorway, work area, play space, or regular path, leaving it alone is usually the safest choice for people and pollinators. Rope off or mark the area temporarily so people do not accidentally walk through it.

Do not apply pesticide merely because the holes are unattractive or inconvenient to mow around. Avoid tilling, digging, compaction, or other heavy soil disturbance while the bees are active; those actions can destroy underground tunnels and developing brood. Existing ground-bee habitat can be difficult to recreate.
For a construction or landscaping project, document the location, keep equipment out of the area, and schedule soil disturbance for after the seasonal activity has ended whenever the project timetable allows. If the area cannot be avoided, obtain an identification and site-specific recommendation before disturbing it.
5. Make nonchemical landscape changes only after activity ends
If the location is incompatible with normal use—for example, directly beneath a walkway or in a frequently used play area—wait until the aggregation is inactive before changing the site. Possible long-term measures include:

- Rerouting foot traffic or relocating a play area
- Correcting drainage problems where they create unsuitable or unstable site conditions
- Establishing appropriate vegetation where bare soil is the attractant
- Reducing repeated soil compaction or disturbance
There is no universal lawn treatment that permanently prevents every ground-nesting bee. Different species select different soil textures, moisture levels, exposure, and vegetation conditions. Do not cover an active nesting area with a thick layer of mulch or mechanically destroy the soil while bees are using it. Time habitat changes to reduce harm and choose the least disruptive option.
6. Choose professional help first when yellowjacket risk is significant
Professional treatment is the safer option when:
- Anyone at the property has a known sting allergy
- The nest is large, highly active, concealed, or difficult to reach
- The nest is inside a wall, attic, tree, crawlspace, or other structure
- The entrance is next to a door, path, play area, pet run, or active jobsite
- Children, pets, workers, or bystanders cannot be excluded
- The insect has not been identified confidently
A licensed pest-management professional can assess the species, nesting location, access limitations, and legal treatment options. Do not attempt removal simply because a product or protective garment is available. No clothing or precaution makes treatment of an active nest completely sting-proof.
If honey bees are suspected, request a beekeeper or humane bee-removal specialist rather than a routine yellowjacket treatment. Verify licensing and local availability before hiring any provider.
About a bee veil
A bee veil can be relevant protective equipment for a qualified person inspecting or working around stinging insects, but it is not a guarantee of protection and is not sufficient by itself. It does not protect every part of the body, prevent insects from entering gaps, or make a dangerous nest safe to treat. Anyone with a sting allergy should not attempt removal, even while wearing protective equipment.
7. If DIY treatment is justified, follow the exact pesticide label
DIY treatment should be considered only for a confidently identified yellowjacket nest that is accessible, isolated, and manageable under the product’s current label. University extension guidance describes applying an insecticide dust in and around a ground-nest entrance at night, when yellowjackets are generally less active. That guidance is not a universal product recommendation.

Before buying or applying anything, confirm that the label authorizes all of the following:
- The target pest—specifically yellowjackets or the insect you identified
- The application site, such as a ground nest or lawn area
- The application method and amount
- The timing and any re-entry interval
- Required protective equipment and disposal instructions
Pesticide labels are legally enforceable. A product marketed for wasps, hornets, lawns, or general insects is not automatically approved for every ground nest or property type. Follow any stricter state or local requirements as well as the label.

Keep people and animals away, prevent drift, and do not apply pesticides to blooming plants or areas with active pollinators unless the label expressly permits the application under stated restrictions. Timing, drift reduction, buffers, and other pollinator-protection directions matter. Never improvise a dilution, combine products, or substitute household chemicals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Never use improvised treatments or seal an active entrance
Do not pour gasoline, boiling water, flammable liquids, household cleaners, or unapproved pesticide mixtures into a nest. These methods can cause fire, burns, toxic exposure, soil or water contamination, property damage, and harm to non-target insects. They also may not reach the colony and can provoke defensive behavior.
Do not seal a suspected active yellowjacket entrance before the colony is dead or professionally removed. Trapped yellowjackets may search for another exit, potentially into a wall or building. Once treatment or removal is complete, have the opening and any structural void assessed and repaired appropriately rather than sealing an active colony prematurely.
When to stop and call a professional
- There is a known sting allergy at the property.
- The insects are inside a wall, attic, tree, or other concealed space.
- The nest is beside a doorway, path, play area, pet run, or active construction area.
- Children, pets, workers, or visitors cannot be kept away.
- The insects cannot be identified confidently.
- The nest is large, highly active, or difficult to access.
If someone is stung and develops trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, widespread hives, dizziness, vomiting, or other signs of a severe allergic reaction, call emergency services immediately and follow the person’s prescribed emergency plan if available.
What “getting rid of ground bees” should mean
The right outcome is not automatically killing every insect using a hole in the lawn. First determine whether the site contains solitary pollinating bees, a communal yellowjacket colony, solitary wasps, or honey bees in a cavity. Leave solitary ground bees undisturbed when practical, mark the area during seasonal activity, and preserve useful nesting habitat. If the insects are confirmed yellowjackets—or the location is concealed, highly active, or dangerous—use a qualified professional or a product whose current label specifically authorizes the treatment, and follow every safety and pollinator-protection instruction.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. “Ground bees” is a broad homeowner term. Many are solitary pollinators that nest individually in groups and are generally less defensive than yellowjackets, but they can still sting. A busy communal entrance with smooth yellow-and-black wasps requires a more cautious response.
Are all ground bees dangerous?
No. Boiling water, gasoline, flammable liquids, household chemicals, and unapproved pesticide mixtures can cause burns, fire, toxic exposure, contamination, and property damage. They may also provoke defensive insects without reliably eliminating the nest.

Can I seal a yellowjacket nest entrance?
Call one for a known sting allergy, a large or concealed nest, difficult access, an entrance near a doorway or play area, a site where children or pets cannot be excluded, or any situation in which the insect cannot be identified confidently.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Keep people and pets away, identify the insect from a safe distance, and do not treat a solitary-bee aggregation simply because it has multiple holes. Use professional help for allergies, hidden or high-traffic nests, large colonies, and uncertain identification. For any justified DIY yellowjacket treatment, follow the exact current pesticide label and never seal or disturb an active entrance prematurely.
