Start by identifying the finish and checking that it is stable. Dust stable surfaces gently; avoid adding oils or stripping an original finish. If paint is flaking, wood is broadly exposed, or the piece may be valuable, stop and seek an experienced conservator or finisher.
First identify what looks worn
A furniture finish is a coating that affects appearance and helps protect wood from soiling and some moisture. Original finishes may also carry historical, aesthetic, and financial value. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) advises that such finishes should be maintained, not casually replaced (CCI, Care of Furniture Finishes, revised guidance listed as 2017).

Dullness alone does not prove that the coating has disappeared. Before applying a cleaner, wax, or touch-up product, inspect the surface and consider its history. Furniture finishes may contain different materials or layers, and old coatings can be difficult to identify.
- Loose dust or surface soil: If the coating is stable, gentle dusting may be all that is needed.
- Minor scratch or blemish: A small, localized mark may be suitable for a carefully matched touch-up product.
- Flaking, powdering, or lifting paint: The finish is unstable; rubbing, wet-cleaning, sanding, or DIY consolidation can worsen the damage.
- Bare wood across a broad area or water staining: The coating may be missing or damaged beyond a simple touch-up. This can require specialist assessment or refinishing.
Clean stable finishes gently
Remove loose dust first
For a stable painted surface, CCI describes using a soft cotton cloth or a soft brush with a vacuum to remove loose dust and dirt. Keep the brush gentle and do not scrape or press on fragile areas. Many paints are sensitive to water and solvents, so CCI recommends that aqueous or solvent cleaning of painted surfaces be carried out by a conservation professional.

Be cautious with older furniture
Some historic furniture is water-sensitive. CCI recommends dry dusting for many pre-World War I pieces; that guidance is not a guarantee about every item from that period, but it is a reason to avoid testing a generic wet cleaner on an unknown finish (CCI, Basic care – Furniture and objects made of wood, page dated 2018-11-14).
Do not use furniture oil or a “feed the wood” mixture to revive the surface. CCI says wood does not need feeding; oils and restoration mixtures can leave residues that accumulate, attract dirt, and complicate later treatment.

Use wax only when the finish is suitable
Wax is a conditional maintenance option, not a universal repair. If re-waxing is appropriate for a stable finish, CCI recommends furniture paste wax without colorants or perfumes. Apply a thin layer with a soft, lint-free cloth, let it dry to a matte appearance, then buff it. Waxing should be infrequent; occasional buffing with clean cotton may be sufficient for years. CCI also identifies microcrystalline wax as one option for increasing gloss on handled surfaces, again with infrequent application.
Frequent waxing or indiscriminate use of polish and restorers can build up residue. If you do not know what coating is on the furniture, or whether it has already been waxed or polished, avoid layering on another product until you have identified the finish.

Match a touch-up to the damage
Small blemishes in stained, clear-coated furniture
For minor blemishes, Minwax describes using a stain marker; for deeper scratches, it describes a filler pencil. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independent test results, and compatibility and color match vary by product and existing finish. A marker can color a small blemish, but it cannot replace coating that is missing over a large area. See Minwax, How To Revive & Repair Old Finishes.
Test before applying a new finish layer
If you plan to apply a fresh finish over an existing coating, Minwax advises testing adhesion in a hidden area first. A hidden test does not resolve every compatibility concern, so do not treat it as a substitute for identifying an unknown or historically important finish.

Know when not to DIY
Do not rub, wet-clean, sand, or try to consolidate a finish that is flaking or powdering. CCI advises careful handling of unstable painted finishes and says consolidation belongs with an experienced conservator. If the piece is valuable, historically significant, broadly worn through, or water-stained, get advice before removing material or applying a new coating.
Stripping is not a default solution: once an original finish is removed, it cannot be put back authentically. CCI recommends consulting a conservator for extensive cleaning or repair. Refinishing may be appropriate in some cases, but an antique or unknown finish should not go straight to sanding without assessment.

Choose the next step by condition and risk
| What you see | Prudent next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dust or loose soil on a stable surface | Use gentle dry dusting; for stable painted surfaces, a soft cloth or soft brush with vacuum. | Limits abrasion and avoids exposing a sensitive coating to water or solvents. |
| Minor blemish on stained, clear-coated furniture | Consider a compatible marker or filler pencil on a small test area. | Manufacturer guidance describes these for localized marks, not broad coating loss. |
| Flaking or powdering paint | Stop handling beyond careful dust protection and consult an experienced conservator. | Unstable finishes can be damaged by rubbing or DIY consolidation. |
| Broad bare patches, substantial damage, or uncertain historic finish | Seek an experienced conservator or finisher before cleaning, sanding, or refinishing. | Removing original material is irreversible, and unknown coatings may react unpredictably. |
