Do not start buffing until you know what the surface and coating are. High-gloss wood lacquer, polyurethane, varnish, shellac, piano polyester, plastic and automotive paint do not share one safe recipe. Read the maker’s care instructions first. If the coating is unknown, ask the manufacturer, dealer or a qualified repair technician before using compound or a machine.
Choose the right level of treatment
| Surface condition | Safest first approach | When to stop |
|---|---|---|
| Dust or fingerprints | Gentle dry cleaning with a finish-appropriate soft cloth or brush | Stop if wiping reveals scratches, cloudiness or loose coating |
| Minor haze, dullness or fine marks on a known, cured glossy wood clear coat | Finish-compatible polish or compound, tested in a hidden area | Stop if the finish changes unevenly, feels thin or begins to smear |
| Deep scratches, chips, exposed wood or a dull high-gloss piano | Professional coating repair | Do not attempt corrective machine work without finish-specific expertise |
1. Identify the item and coating
Find the owner’s manual, care label or maker’s guidance. Piano finishes are especially variable; advice for a cured glossy wood clear coat may damage a piano, plastic panel or automotive finish. Kawai advises using a polyester repair specialist for dull or deeply scratched high-gloss piano finishes. A local dealer can help locate one.
Do not infer compatibility from the word “polish.” A product described for furniture may contain solvents or abrasives unsuitable for another coating. General furniture polish is not recommended for pianos unless it is specifically made for high-gloss piano finishes, according to Kawai.
2. Remove dust without grinding it into the surface
Dust is abrasive when dragged across gloss. Roland’s March 27, 2026, guidance for high-polish pianos says: “For regular care of the finish, please use a soft cloth or a feather brush designed for pianos to lightly wipe the product’s surface.” Use a clean, soft cloth or a brush intended for that finish, with light strokes. Do not press hard and do not buff a visibly gritty surface.

#1 Best Overall
- PREPS SURFACE: Pre-waxing glaze that prepares the surface for wax while offering deep reflections and high gloss.
- BEST CAR GLOSS: Conditioning oils add depth of color and maximum gloss prior to waxing, especially on dark colored cars
- REMOVE SWIRLS: Quickly and gently removes fine swirls and towel marks for mirror-like reflections
- SAFE FOR CLEAR COATS: Safe and on all glossy paints, including clear coats
- FLEXIBLE APPLICATION: Safe and effective by hand or dual action polisher like Meguiar's MT300 Dual Action Polisher
For pianos, keep liquid and spray away from strings, tuning pins and openings. Cory specifically warns against spraying near strings or tuning pins. Avoid detergents, household cleansers and chemical-treated cloths where the manufacturer advises against them.
3. Select and test the polish
Choose a cleaner or compound whose instructions explicitly cover your coating. Cory recommends cleaning the surface before polishing, testing compatibility in an inconspicuous place and using a soft cloth. Excess polish can leave buildup, so more product is not better.

For a known, cured glossy wood clear coat with only minor surface defects, Howard describes its Restor-A-Shine compound as intended for glossy polyurethane, lacquer, varnish and shellac finishes, including furniture, pianos and guitars. That is the manufacturer’s product claim, not a guarantee for every object or condition; follow the current label and test first. The product’s retail availability can change.
Hidden-spot test
- Choose an area normally concealed by hardware, a rear edge or the underside.
- Clean it using the same method planned for the visible surface.
- Apply a small amount of the chosen product exactly as directed.
- Allow the test area to settle for the period specified by the product instructions, then check gloss, color, tackiness, haze and residue under reflected light.
- Proceed only if the coating remains even and sound.
4. Hand-buffing a compatible glossy wood finish
- Work in a clean, shaded area so the product does not dry unpredictably on a hot surface.
- Use a clean cloth or pad suitable for both the coating and the compound. Fold or change the cloth when it becomes loaded with residue.
- Apply a small amount to the cloth or pad rather than flooding the surface.
- Work a small section with light, controlled overlapping passes. Keep the pad flat; do not concentrate force on one spot.
- Remove residue as directed and inspect the section before moving on. Stop if gloss becomes patchy, the surface feels soft or sticky, or color appears on the cloth.
Keep sharp edges and corners especially light. The Piano Technicians Guild warns that hard pressure on lacquer edges can wear through to bare wood.

5. Using a polishing pad or machine
A machine is not automatically safer or better than hand polishing. Pad material, compound and coating hardness must match, and the sources do not establish one universal speed or pressure setting. StewMac’s compound instructions say to apply compound to the pad and ease pressure as it dries. Menzerna warns that excessive pressure can overheat a coating.
- Use the product maker’s pad and operating instructions; do not improvise a speed or pressure specification.
- Keep the pad moving and pressure low and controlled.
- Check temperature frequently. Stop if the surface becomes noticeably warm, hazy or smeared.
- Mask or avoid edges, corners, seams, hardware and openings.
- Never use a machine on an unknown finish, a loose coating or a damaged piano surface simply to save time.
Festool and Mirka both publish finish-specific guidance for polishing wooden surfaces, but their procedures still depend on the particular coating, abrasive system and equipment. Treat those instructions as system guidance, not a universal recipe.

When buffing will not fix the problem
- Deep scratches: If a mark catches a fingernail, polishing may remove too much surrounding coating before it removes the scratch.
- Chips, lifting or exposed wood: Repair the coating rather than spreading compound over a failing area.
- Persistent dullness: A permanently cloudy or uneven finish may need leveling, recoating or polyester repair.
- Unknown compatibility: Stop and obtain model-specific advice instead of escalating abrasiveness.
For high-gloss pianos with substantial dullness or deep scratches, Kawai recommends a polyester repair specialist. A qualified furniture finisher or instrument technician is the appropriate escalation for other valuable coated surfaces.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buffing before removing loose dust.
- Using household cleaner, detergent or general furniture polish without finish approval.
- Skipping the hidden-area test.
- Applying heavy pressure to edges and corners.
- Assuming a machine eliminates the risk of heat or burn-through.
- Spraying piano products near strings or tuning pins.
- Continuing after the coating, not merely the residue, appears to be coming off.
A practical decision rule
If the item is identified, the coating is compatible, the defect is superficial and the test patch stays uniform, gentle hand polishing is the lowest-risk corrective step. If any of those conditions is missing—or the finish is chipped, deeply scratched, overheating or changing color—stop buffing and use a qualified repair professional.
