After replacing the filter, reset the indicator using the control panel or menu for your specific Samsung refrigerator. Many models use a three-second hold on a button labeled “Filter Reset” or a secondary function; Family Hub and some other models use on-screen menus. The reset clears the reminder—it does not test the filter.
Find the reset method that matches your control panel
Samsung uses different reset paths across refrigerator models. Match the instructions to the labels and interface on your refrigerator rather than trying a button combination from a different model. Samsung’s US support guide and Canada support guide describe these common options.
Standard button panel
Look for “Filter Reset (3 sec)” and hold it for three seconds after installing the replacement. On some models, the reset function is assigned to another button, such as Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water. Use the label or manual for your model; these buttons are not universal substitutes. The indicator may turn off or return to its normal color.
Family Hub touchscreen
On models with the listed Family Hub controls, tap Apps → Fridge Manager → Fridge Settings → Water Filter → Reset, then confirm.

Arrow-button controls
Samsung US directs owners of applicable arrow-button models to open More Options and select Filter Reset. The exact navigation depends on the panel.
RF4289 and RSG309
For these specific legacy models, Samsung Canada documents this route: open Settings, select Water Filter, advance to page 4/4, hold Reset the water filter until the status changes, and save.

Other regional button labels
Samsung UK documents a three-second hold on Ice Type / Filter Change for applicable models. Samsung New Zealand lists Ice Type/Filter Change or Alarm on applicable models. See the regional instructions for Samsung UK and Samsung New Zealand; treat those labels as model-specific.
What the filter light tells you
The built-in indicator is a replacement reminder, not a direct measurement of filter condition. Samsung says it generally comes on after about six months, but water quality and dispenser use can affect when replacement is needed. The six-month interval is a timer guideline, not a guarantee that a filter is spent—or that it remains effective until then.

Water flow can provide another clue: Samsung suggests comparing dispensing flow with the filter installed and removed. Noticeably slower flow with the filter installed can indicate that replacement is due, even if the indicator has not appeared. Resetting the light does not establish that a filter is clean, effective, or newly installed.

Reset the indicator after installing a new cartridge. There is no single cartridge identified for every Samsung refrigerator in the general guidance: the replacement must be compatible with your refrigerator model. Check the refrigerator’s model number against the cartridge specifications before buying a Samsung refrigerator water filter.

If the light does not reset or water flow is slow
- The control does not match: Check the model number and consult that refrigerator’s user manual. Do not assume that a button combination from another Samsung panel applies.
- The reset does not register: Confirm that you are using the right control or menu path and, for a labeled three-second control, hold it for the full indicated time.
- Flow is slow after replacement: Samsung Canada advises checking that the filter is installed and locked correctly. Follow the model’s manual for installation steps.
- Water tastes or smells unusual after replacement: Samsung Canada advises dispensing additional water. Its Canada procedure gives roughly seven minutes or 10–12 large glasses as a flushing instruction, but flushing directions vary by model and region; follow the instructions for your refrigerator.
