How to Reset a Ring Spotlight Camera Safely (All Models)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To factory-reset a Ring Spotlight Cam, press and hold its setup button for 20 seconds, then release it. The camera will need to be set up again in the Ring app. Before doing that, try a power cycle for a temporary freeze or offline problem, and protect important recordings before deleting or transferring the device.

Restart, power cycle, factory reset, or remove the device?

These actions solve different problems. Choosing the least disruptive option first can save your Wi-Fi settings and recordings.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Action What it does Use it when
Power cycle Interrupts power and restarts the camera without intentionally erasing configuration. Live View is frozen, the camera is temporarily offline, or the app appears stuck.
Factory reset Returns the camera to its initial setup state; you must reconnect it in the Ring app. Normal reconnection fails repeatedly, configuration is corrupted, or Ring Support tells you to reset.
Deactivate Removes the device from your account while allowing eligible Event History to remain available until it expires. You are transferring the camera and want to preserve recordings.
Delete Removes the device and access to its Event History. You are permanently removing it and have saved anything you need.

Power-cycle instructions

  • Battery model: Remove the battery pack for 10 seconds, then reinstall it.
  • Plug-in model: Unplug it for 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
  • Wired model: Turn off the relevant power source or circuit, then turn it back on.

Ring documents these power-cycle methods and the 20-second reset procedure in its camera reset guidance.

Which Spotlight Cam do you have?

The name covers several generations and power arrangements. The procedure below applies broadly to Spotlight Cam, Spotlight Cam Plus, Spotlight Cam Pro and Spotlight Cam (2nd Gen), but battery access, wiring and power-mode settings differ.

  • Stop intruders in their tracks – With 2 motion-activated LED spotlights that turn on when they detect motion, and sound the built-in security siren with just a few taps.
  • Focus on important areas – Customizable motion zones let you choose exactly what your camera covers – so you only get notified about what matters most.

  • Speak to visitors on camera – Talk to guests anytime, from anywhere with Two-Way Talk.
Family Power variants you may encounter Important consideration
Spotlight Cam Battery, plug-in or wired configurations, depending on edition Confirm how your specific unit is powered before disconnecting anything.
Spotlight Cam Plus Battery, plug-in, wired or solar variants Battery drain and power-mode settings can affect reliability.
Spotlight Cam Pro Battery, plug-in, wired or solar variants Use the correct accessory and power mode for your installation.
Spotlight Cam (2nd Gen) Battery, plug-in, wired or solar variants Ring identifies this as its newest Spotlight model; 24/7 Recording requires plug-in power and eligible plan features.

Ring’s current outdoor-camera lineup shows the available families and configurations.

Before you reset

  1. Confirm power. Charge and reseat a battery, or verify the adapter, cable and circuit for powered models.
  2. Try a power cycle. It is safer for a camera that is merely frozen or temporarily offline.
  3. Check the Ring app. Use Device Health or Wi-Fi troubleshooting before erasing configuration.
  4. Prepare for setup. Have the Wi-Fi name and password ready, update the Ring app and keep your phone near the camera.
  5. Save recordings. Download clips you may need before deleting or deactivating the device.
  6. Use the account owner’s login. Only account owners can remove devices; Shared Users can remove only their own access.
  7. Work safely. Use a stable ladder and avoid working on a wall-mounted camera in unsafe weather.

For Spotlight Cam (2nd Gen), Ring recommends at least 5 Mbps upload speed for optimal 2K streaming; that is a recommendation, not a performance guarantee. Distance, interference, router placement and video settings still matter.

Rank #2
Ring Spotlight Cam 2K (newest model), Battery, Home or business security, Wide-Angle Retinal 2K Video, 6x Enhanced Zoom, Motion-Activated Spotlights, White
  • Experience crisp clarity with Retinal 2K video — See all the crucial details across your home or business with wide-angle Retinal 2K. (Video quality may vary based on internet bandwidth and device temperature.)
  • Zoom in up to 6x — Bring details into sharp focus with up to 6x Enhanced Zoom.
  • Stay protected with motion-activated spotlights — Secure your home and keep dark walkways and corners well-lit with lights that automatically turn on when your camera detects motion.
  • Sound the siren with a tap — Activate the built-in siren from the Ring app to send unwanted visitors running.
  • Put protection anywhere — Easy-to-mount, weather-resistant security with multiple power options.

How to factory-reset a Ring Spotlight Cam

  1. Leave the camera powered on.
  2. Locate the setup button, normally on the top of the camera.
  3. Press and hold the setup button continuously for 20 seconds.
  4. Release the button.
  5. Allow the camera to restart and enter setup mode.
  6. Open the Ring app and follow the camera setup prompts.
  7. After setup, test Live View, motion detection, night vision, spotlight, audio and notifications.

Ring’s general instruction is simply to hold the camera’s setup button for 20 seconds and release it. Ring does not publish one universal Spotlight Cam LED sequence for every model and firmware version, so do not rely on an unverified color pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where is the setup button?

For Spotlight Cam models, look on the top of the camera body. Do not confuse it with the security screw, mounting hardware, battery-release mechanism or power connector.

Ring Spotlight Cam Plus, Battery, Home or Business Security with HD video, Two-Way Talk, Color Night Vision, and Security Siren, Black
  • Look in anytime — Watch over your home or business day or night in wide-angle, 1080p HD video with Color Night Vision and see what’s happening with Live View.
  • Stop intruders in their tracks — With 2 motion-activated LED spotlights that turn on when they detect motion, and sound the built-in security siren with just a few taps.
  • Focus on important areas — Customizable motion zones let you choose exactly what your camera covers – so you only get notified about what matters most.
  • Convenient Power — Easily power your device with the Quick Release Battery Pack.
  • Speak to visitors on camera — Talk to guests anytime, from anywhere with Two-Way Talk.

Ring’s exception is Outdoor Cam (formerly Stick Up Cam), whose setup button is inside the battery compartment. That is not the standard Spotlight Cam arrangement. If the camera is mounted high, lower it only when you can do so safely and without damaging the weather-resistant housing.

Set the camera up again after resetting

  1. Open the Ring app and start the add-device or setup flow.
  2. Select the appropriate camera category and model when prompted.
  3. Follow the app’s instructions to connect your phone and camera.
  4. Enter the home Wi-Fi credentials and keep the camera powered while setup or firmware updates finish.
  5. Wait for Live View to work before reinstalling or remounting the camera.

A reset does not restore the previous Wi-Fi configuration automatically. If the app still shows an old entry, use the account-management process below rather than repeatedly attempting setup against a stale device record.

Rank #4

  • Real-time alerts* — Get motion-activated notification when anyone steps in view of your camera.
  • Customizable Motion Zones* — Fine-tune which areas you want to focus on in the Ring app.
  • Light up large outdoor areas* — 2000 lumen motion-activated floodlights give unwanted visitors nowhere to hide.
  • Sound the siren with a tap* — Activate the 85dB siren from the Ring app to send unwanted visitors running.

Remove, deactivate or delete the camera in Ring

Physical resetting and account management are separate. To reach the current removal controls, open the Ring app and go to Menu → Devices → select the camera → Device Settings → General Settings → Remove Device. Labels can vary with app versions; Ring’s current instructions are at Deactivating a Ring Doorbell or Security Camera.

For an ownership transfer

  1. Download recordings you want to keep.
  2. Choose Keep Events, then Deactivate Device, when offered.
  3. Give the new owner the camera so they can add it to their Ring account.
  4. Review Shared Users and account security after the transfer.

Deactivation can preserve Event History until recordings reach their normal retention limit. Ring says deleting a device removes access to Event History, and deletion does not automatically cancel the attached subscription. Motion-event videos may be stored for up to 180 days under compatible plans and account conditions; see Ring’s plan details.

For permanent removal

Select Delete Events only after saving anything important. This removes the device and its Event History access. A physical reset alone is not a complete ownership handoff if the camera remains attached to the old account.

Ring Spotlight Cam reset not working? Follow this recovery ladder

The camera does nothing after 20 seconds

  • Confirm that it is receiving power and that a battery is fully seated.
  • Make sure you held the actual setup button continuously for the full 20 seconds.
  • Check the adapter, cable, outlet, switch or circuit for wired models.
  • Power-cycle the camera, then repeat the reset while it is powered on.
  • Suspect hardware damage or water intrusion if confirmed power produces no response.

The app cannot find the camera

  • Move the phone close to the camera during setup.
  • Check that the camera is not still associated with another Ring account.
  • Remove or deactivate a stale device entry in the current account.
  • Recheck the Wi-Fi password and phone permissions, including local-network access where applicable.
  • Bring the camera temporarily nearer to the router to reduce distance and interference.

Setup fails repeatedly

  1. Reboot the router.
  2. Power-cycle the camera.
  3. Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully.
  4. Temporarily reduce the distance between phone, camera and router.
  5. Retry with a battery that is not nearly depleted.
  6. Repeat the factory reset.
  7. Clear a stale account entry through Remove Device if necessary.
  8. Contact Ring Support if the camera cannot enter setup mode or remains unresponsive.

The camera reconnects, then goes offline

  • Check signal strength at the installation point, building materials and router placement.
  • Look for network congestion.
  • For battery cameras, account for cold weather, frequent motion, Live View and spotlight use.
  • Verify that Battery Mode, Wired Mode or Low Power Mode matches the actual installation.
  • Inspect cables, adapters and hardwired connections.

Ring’s power-mode troubleshooting covers compatible Spotlight Cam Plus, Pro and (2nd Gen) devices.

Live View works, but lights, siren or notifications do not

Test each feature separately: motion detection, spotlight activation, night vision, two-way audio, siren and push notifications. A successful Wi-Fi setup does not guarantee that motion zones, privacy zones, notification preferences, recording settings or light behavior match your former configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Post-reset checklist

  • Live View opens reliably.
  • Two-way talk works in both directions.
  • Motion alerts arrive on the intended phones.
  • Motion and privacy zones are correct.
  • Spotlight and night vision operate as expected.
  • Siren activation works if enabled.
  • Recording and Event History behave as your plan allows.
  • Shared Users are limited to people you trust.
  • The selected power mode matches battery, wired, plug-in or solar operation.

When to contact Ring Support or replace the camera

Contact Ring Support when the camera has confirmed power, the correct setup button was held for 20 seconds, and it still cannot enter setup mode or remain connected. Replacement is more reasonable after physical damage, water intrusion, repeated power failure or a persistent hardware fault that remains after support troubleshooting. Before replacing it, download recordings and deliberately deactivate or delete the old account entry.
