Roomba Error 43 does not mean the same thing on every model. On i Series robots, it usually means the robot is trapped in the infrared beam from a Virtual Wall or Home Base. On j Series and Combo 10 Max, it means a cleaning job was started inside the dock’s Keep-Out Zone. Move the robot into an open area, restart the job, and then correct the dock, Virtual Wall, or map placement that caused the error.
Older and other families, including some s Series models, use related dock or infrared-halo wording. Confirm the exact model and message before applying a model-specific fix.

Quick fix for Error 43
- Stop the current cleaning job.
- Lift Roomba and place it several feet away from the Home Base, dock, and any Virtual Wall, in an open area with a clear path.
- Press CLEAN on the robot, or restart the mission in the iRobot app.
- Watch whether it begins moving normally. If it does, the original starting location was probably inside an infrared boundary or restricted zone.
- After a successful start, inspect the dock and boundary placement before returning Roomba to the Home Base.
iRobot’s i Series guidance is to move the robot to a new location and press CLEAN; its j Series guidance likewise says to move the robot out of the dock Keep-Out Zone and restart. See iRobot’s Error 43 support article and the j Series error chart.

First identify your Roomba model

Fix Error 43 on a Roomba i Series
iRobot describes this code as the robot starting in the Home Base infrared halo or becoming stuck in an infrared beam from a Virtual Wall or Home Base.
Clear and test the Home Base
- Remove cords, furniture, boxes, and other clutter that narrows the exit.
- Make sure the base is not wedged against furniture or positioned where Roomba cannot turn and leave cleanly.
- Temporarily move the Home Base to a more open location and run a short test.
- If Roomba starts successfully when placed manually in an open room, the dock area is the likely trigger.
Do not apply one universal clearance measurement: iRobot’s Error 43 guidance calls for a clear, uncluttered area, while exact dimensions vary by model.

Isolate Virtual Walls
- Locate every Virtual Wall in the cleaning area.
- Check that two units are not facing one another and creating a trapped region.
- Move a unit away from the Home Base and narrow passages.
- Switch off or remove nonessential Virtual Walls and test again.
- Do not start Roomba between two infrared boundaries if there is no clear exit.
These checks follow iRobot’s warning that multiple Virtual Walls facing each other can cause navigation problems.

Fix Error 43 on a j Series or Combo 10 Max
For these models, Error 43 indicates that the cleaning job began inside the dock’s small default Keep-Out Zone. The robot may be functioning normally; it was simply launched too close to the dock.

- Move Roomba away from the dock into an open area.
- Restart the mission from the robot or app.
- If it runs normally, inspect the dock position and the map before scheduling the next job.
- If the dock was recently moved, allow the robot to recognize the new environment and test again.
- Check the app map for a Keep-Out Zone or dock-related restricted area overlapping the intended starting position.
Map rebuilding is not the first step. Try the physical relocation and controlled test first, as described in iRobot’s j Series/Combo guidance.
If Error 43 keeps returning
- Verify the model and the exact spoken or app message.
- Disable or remove Virtual Walls temporarily.
- Start Roomba away from the dock in a large, open room.
- Reboot it using the instructions for that exact series.
- Consider recent dock moves, map edits, or Keep-Out Zone changes.
- Contact iRobot if the error persists after these tests.
A reboot is a low-risk software refresh and does not erase the robot’s data. A factory reset is different: it can remove settings and account associations. Button procedures vary by family, so use iRobot’s model-specific reboot and reset instructions rather than a generic button sequence.

When Error 43 may indicate a hardware or service issue
Error 43 alone does not prove that the battery, brush motor, bumper, sensor, motherboard, or another replaceable part has failed. Escalate when:

- The code appears in a large open area with the Home Base and Virtual Walls removed.
- It returns immediately after a model-specific reboot.
- Roomba cannot undock, turns in place, or behaves as though an invisible wall is always present.
- The dock has visible damage or appears to emit an abnormal infrared signal.
- Other navigation or internal errors appear.
- The problem began after liquid exposure, an impact, disassembly, or a component replacement.
Do not buy a battery, brush, filter, wheel, or replacement dock solely because of Error 43. Replacement parts are appropriate only after a separate inspection identifies damage; iRobot directs customers to its official parts and accessories store.

What to give iRobot Customer Care
Prepare the following before contacting iRobot support:
- Exact model and series
- Serial number
- Error number and the spoken or app message
- Where the error occurs: dock, Virtual Wall, or open room
- Whether the Home Base recently moved
- Whether maps or Keep-Out Zones were recently edited
- Purchase receipt if warranty service may apply
