A loose chair spindle needs the right repair for its condition: first check whether the joint is still aligned, whether the wood or socket is damaged, and whether old glue is present. For a clean, snug joint in newer furniture, PVA wood glue may be suitable; antiques or joints that may contain hide glue call for hide glue or professional restoration. Simply adding glue around a badly loose or damaged joint can leave the underlying problem unfixed.
Inspect the spindle and joint before choosing a repair
Check the spindle, its end (often called a tenon), and the hole it fits into. A slightly loose joint that remains intact and aligned is different from a spindle that has come out, cracked wood, or a socket that has become oversized. Those conditions affect whether the joint can be reglued as-is or needs to be taken apart and cleaned.
- Still seated and aligned: A sound joint may be suitable for careful regluing, provided the adhesive is compatible with the wood and any glue already present.
- Detached or substantially loose: The joint may need to be disassembled so old adhesive can be removed and the mating surfaces prepared.
- Cracked spindle or damaged socket: Glue alone may not address the damage. For a valuable chair or uncertain structural repair, consult a qualified furniture restorer.
Do not scrape or sand aggressively to make a joint look clean: removing wood can change the fit. A loose or oversized socket is not reliably fixed by simply filling it with glue.
Choose glue based on the chair and existing adhesive
| Situation | Adhesive approach | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Newer furniture with a clean, snug joint | PVA wood glue is a reasonable option. | Check for old adhesive and follow the product directions. Canadian Woodworking recommends PVA for newer furniture: How to repair a chair. |
| Antique furniture or a joint suspected to use hide glue | Hide glue is the more restoration-appropriate choice. | It preserves reversibility better than adding PVA over hide glue. Canadian Woodworking recommends hide glue for antiques: How to repair a chair. |
| Old glue remains, but its type is uncertain | Identify the adhesive before choosing; if the chair is valuable or the joint condition is unclear, consult a restorer. | David Munkittrick of WoodWorkers Guild of America warns that PVA over cured hide glue may not bond properly and is not reversible. His phrase “PVA glue just messes things up” refers to that specific situation, not to every chair repair: Chair Repair Done Right. |
Reglue the joint with its fit and alignment intact
- Take the joint apart only as needed. A substantially loose or detached spindle may need full surface preparation; do not force a joint apart if doing so risks damage.
- Remove old adhesive from mating surfaces. Clean the spindle end and socket without removing wood or changing their fit.
- Apply compatible glue to the appropriate surfaces. Follow the adhesive maker’s directions rather than assuming every glue is applied or handled the same way.
- Bring the joint together accurately. Seat the spindle fully and check that it is aligned with the rest of the chair before clamping.
- Hold it steady while the glue cures. A bar clamp or twine can hold a simple rung repair in place. Clamp firmly enough to maintain alignment, but do not over-tighten.
- Clean excess glue before it dries where practical, taking care not to disturb the joint.
- Wait until the adhesive has dried completely before using the chair. Follow the chosen product’s cure-time and safety instructions.

When to stop and get restoration help
- The spindle, tenon, or socket is cracked or visibly damaged.
- The joint is loose enough that it will not seat accurately or remain aligned.
- You cannot tell whether the old adhesive is hide glue and the chair may be antique or valuable.
- Disassembly risks damaging the chair or the joint’s fit.
Adhesive choice and clamping cannot compensate for damaged wood or an unsuitable joint fit. A furniture-restoration professional can assess those conditions before they are made harder to repair.
