To repair fertilizer burn, remove any visible spilled granules, then water the affected area in measured, repeated applications to dilute and move excess fertilizer salts through the soil. Grass with surviving roots may recover; turf whose roots have been killed needs reseeding or sod. First make sure fertilizer is the likely cause: brown patches can have other explanations.
How to tell whether fertilizer caused the damage
Fertilizer salts can interfere with roots’ ability to take up or retain water, so injured grass can look drought-stressed. University of Maryland Extension notes that “Symptoms of fertilizer ‘burn’ usually resemble drought stress.” Brown bands or irregular patches, a recent fertilizer application, spreader overlap, or a concentrated spill can help point to fertilizer injury, but none alone proves the cause. Other lawn problems can also produce brown areas.
Over-application, incorrect spreader settings, overlapping passes, and spills are common ways fertilizer becomes too concentrated around roots. Hot weather and fertilizer that is not watered in can increase the risk, according to the University of Minnesota Extension. If the cause is uncertain or the damage keeps spreading, consult a local extension service or lawn-care professional rather than treating every brown patch as fertilizer burn.
How to repair fertilizer burn
1. Pick up visible spilled fertilizer
If granules or other product remain in a concentrated spill, collect as much as you can before watering. Purdue Extension suggests a shop vacuum or another suitable method, followed by flushing the area with water. Removing the concentrated product first helps avoid washing more of it into the soil.

2. Water to leach excess salts
For an over-fertilized area, University of Maryland Extension’s general lawn-damage guidance recommends soaking the soil with one-inch applications of water, repeated two or three times. A separate University of Maryland fertilizer-injury page recommends three to four one-inch applications. The recommendations are not identical; follow the guidance suited to your area, along with the fertilizer label. A rain gauge can help you measure an inch of irrigation for each application.
Water the affected area rather than applying more fertilizer. Avoid runoff where possible, especially onto pavement, storm drains, or neighboring property.

3. Give surviving grass time to grow
If roots and crowns have survived, allow the turf to grow out after watering. Chemical injury may remain visible for several weeks, but there is no universal recovery timetable: the outcome depends on the extent of injury and growing conditions. Do not add fertilizer to the damaged area while trying to correct an overdose.
4. Reseed or lay sod where grass has died
Water cannot revive turf whose roots have been killed. Replant dead or bare sections with seed or sod. Choose a repair that suits the size of the area, the grass type already growing in the lawn, and the local season and climate. Seed and sod are both supported repair options; there is no universal best choice or established cost comparison for every lawn. General lawn-repair guidance also recommends addressing site conditions that contributed to weak or sparse turf.

How much should you water after applying too much fertilizer?
Use the local extension recommendation rather than assuming one application count applies everywhere. University of Maryland Extension’s lawn-damage guidance calls for two or three one-inch applications; its separate fertilizer-injury guidance calls for three to four. These are repeated applications, not one continuous watering session. Measure the depth with a rain gauge, and use product-label and local recommendations if they differ.

How to prevent another fertilizer burn
- Measure the lawn so you can apply the amount specified for its actual area.
- Calibrate the spreader and use the product’s stated setting; avoid overlapping passes that put extra fertilizer in strips.
- Clean up spills promptly, before watering or rain spreads the product.
- Water after application unless the product label says otherwise. Minnesota Extension notes that fertilizer concentrated around roots, particularly in hot weather or when not watered in, raises the risk of burn.
- Follow the product label and local extension advice before fertilizing again, especially on a damaged section.
