For a conventional screwed joint, drill a clearance hole through the first board and a pilot hole in the board receiving the screw. To hide the head, counterbore the entry face, drive the screw, and glue a wood plug into the recess; trim and sand it flush after the adhesive cures. Pocket-hole joinery is a separate angled-screw method, not another name for a plugged counterbore.
How a conventional screw joint works
The screw passes through the first piece and its threads bite into the mating piece. A clearance hole in the first piece keeps the screw from binding in both boards, helping the head pull the pieces together. A pilot hole in the receiving piece clears room for the threads and can reduce splitting, particularly in hardwood. Fine Woodworking explains these roles in its overview of the screw joint and guide to screws and hardwood plugs.
Hole sizes and recess depth depend on the particular screw, wood species, stock thickness, and joint geometry. There is no single pilot-hole diameter or counterbore depth that suits every screw joint; use guidance appropriate to the fastener and material.
Make a conventional screw joint
- Choose the less visible face. Orient the pieces so the screw entry is on the face that will be least noticeable. Align and clamp the work before drilling or driving. WOOD magazine recommends a scrap backer to help reduce breakout where a drill exits the work.
- Drill the clearance hole. Make it through the first piece so the screw can pass through without its threads catching in that board.
- Drill the pilot hole. Continue into the mating piece where the screw threads will engage. Match the pilot-hole setup to the screw and material; a pilot hole is especially useful for reducing splitting in hardwood.
- Choose the head treatment. If the head will remain visible, use a countersink suited to the screw head when a flush finish is wanted. If you plan to hide it, counterbore the entry face enough to accommodate both the screw head and a plug.
- Drive the screw snug. Keep the pieces aligned and avoid over-tightening. Kreg gives that warning in its pocket-hole assembly instructions; it is a sensible practical caution, not a universal torque specification.
- Fit and finish the plug. Apply glue as appropriate, seat the plug in the counterbore, and let the adhesive cure according to its maker’s directions. Then trim the plug and sand it flush. WOOD magazine demonstrates this sequence in its guide to making and hiding a screw joint.
Choose how to conceal the screw
| Method | Placement and appearance | Tools and considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Face-grain plug cut from project stock | A plug made from similar stock can blend more closely with the surrounding face, especially when its grain is oriented to follow the board’s grain. Differences in grain and finish can still make it visible. | Requires a counterbore and plug cutter. This is WOOD magazine’s recommended approach when visual blending matters. |
| Dowel or end-grain plug | A matching-species dowel is straightforward, but its end grain contrasts with the surrounding face grain. | Requires a counterbore and suitable dowel stock; the grain contrast may remain noticeable. |
| Commercial button plug | Can sit proud as a deliberate decorative detail, or be visually blended to some degree. | Choose a plug that fits the recess. A raised button is not the same flush look as a trimmed wood plug. |
| Pocket-hole placement | Put the angled pocket on an inside, underside, or otherwise hidden face. If it cannot be hidden by placement, a compatible plug can cover it. | Requires a pocket-hole jig, its guided stepped bit, clamping, and screws compatible with the system and work thickness. It is a different joint-making method, not a straight screw with a counterbored recess. |
Make a face-grain plug for a closer match
For a less conspicuous repair or joint, cut a plug from an offcut of similar project stock. Set the plug so its grain runs in the same direction as the surrounding surface, then trim and sand it level after the glue cures. As WOOD magazine’s Craig Ruegsegger puts it: “Probably the easiest way, and the best way, to blend in a plug is to cut your own out of stock similar to what you’re building your project out of.” Even a carefully matched plug can show because its grain and finish may differ from the board around it.

When pocket holes are the better fit
A pocket-hole jig guides a stepped bit to form an angled pocket and pilot hole; a compatible screw then joins the adjoining piece. The hole can be positioned on an unseen face instead of making a straight screw entry on a visible surface. Kreg’s official guides explain how to use a pocket-hole jig and how pocket holes work. Follow the chosen jig system’s instructions for setup, clamping, screw selection, and material thickness rather than assuming one bit setting or screw works for every application.

- A conventional plugged joint calls for a suitable drill setup, the right countersink or counterbore for the screw head, and a plug or plug cutter. A plug cutter is useful if you want to make face-grain plugs from project offcuts.
- A pocket-hole joint calls for a compatible jig, stepped bit, clamp, and system-compatible screws.
- A glued plug conceals the screw and has to be removed to reach it later. If future access matters, account for that before closing the recess.
These instructional sources explain the construction methods and concealment trade-offs; they do not establish a universal load rating or prove that a plug strengthens the joint. Select the screw and drilling setup for the actual wood, thickness, and joint, and consult the fastener or jig maker’s instructions when dimensions are uncertain.
