For a small, non-structural chip or broken edge, remove unsound concrete, clean the cavity, and use a repair product rated for the patch’s depth and orientation. Follow that product’s own preparation, mixing, finishing, and cure instructions. A full-depth break, movement, or damage that may affect support is not a routine surface-patching job and needs a qualified assessment.
First decide whether a patch is appropriate
Note how deep the missing concrete is, where the damage sits, and whether the surrounding slab or step is stable. Small surface losses and damaged corners may suit a non-structural repair product. A patch product described as cosmetic or non-structural should not be treated as a way to restore a slab’s structural capacity.
A 2014 American Cement Institute pavement manual says partial-depth pavement repairs are typically practical when the distress does not extend deeper than one-third of the slab’s depth. That is pavement-engineering guidance, not a homeowner test for whether a house slab or step is structurally safe. If a break goes through the slab, the concrete is moving, or support may be compromised, arrange a qualified local assessment before patching.
Choose a repair material for the depth and surface
Check the current package label and technical data sheet before buying or mixing anything. Repair products differ in their depth limits, suitable surfaces, preparation requirements, and reopening times; do not combine instructions from separate products.

The examples are not a complete market comparison. Match the chosen material to the actual repair and confirm it is suitable for the surface and exposure. A product’s listed application range does not establish that a damaged area is structurally sound.
Prepare and patch the damaged area
- Remove unsound concrete. With an appropriate hammer and cold chisel or other suitable masonry tool, remove loose, flaking material until the remaining edges and base are sound. Avoid enlarging the repair unnecessarily.
- Clean the cavity. Brush out dust and debris; the manufacturer’s edge-repair instructions also describe scrubbing and rinsing. Dust left behind can interfere with the patch’s bond.
- Prepare the surface as the selected product requires. QUIKRETE’s edge-repair method calls for rinsing and dampening the concrete, then removing standing water. Its older deeper Sand Mix guidance specifies bonding adhesive. These are different procedures for different repair methods—use only the directions for your selected product.
- Measure and mix exactly as directed. Use the specified amount of water and mix only what you can place within the product’s working time. QUIKRETE warns in its step-repair guidance that excess water weakens the bond and compressive strength.
- Place and shape the patch. Press the material firmly into the cavity and build it to the surrounding profile as the product instructions direct. For the cited quick-setting edge method, shape the material when it is thumbprint-hard; that timing should not be assumed for other products. Match the existing texture where practical.
- Protect the repair while it cures. Keep people and vehicles off until the selected product’s instructions allow use. QUIKRETE’s step guidance specifies 24 hours before foot traffic, while its Thin Patch page lists 3 hours before walking and 24 hours before driving; neither schedule applies automatically to another product.
Use basic protection and suitable tools
QUIKRETE instructs users working with cement-based products to wear eye protection and waterproof gloves. Its listed tools include a hammer, cold chisel, stiff-bristle brush, margin trowel, measuring pail, and scrub brush. Use tools suited to the job and follow the safety directions on the product label.

When to stop and get an assessment
- The break extends through the slab or is substantially deeper than a surface patch.
- The slab, step, or surrounding concrete moves, rocks, or has separated.
- The missing concrete appears to expose or undermine a supporting area.
- You cannot establish that the remaining concrete is sound or that the chosen product is suitable.
In these cases, patching over the visible gap may conceal rather than resolve the problem. The cited repair-product instructions cover non-structural or cosmetic repairs; they do not identify the correct structural repair for a full-depth or moving break.
