Most homeowners can safely troubleshoot an air conditioner, but only a limited number of repairs are suitable for DIY work. Start with the thermostat, filter, airflow, breaker, outdoor-unit clearance, ice, and condensate drainage. Stop and arrange professional service when the symptom points to refrigerant, high-voltage electrical parts, sealed-system damage, equipment disassembly, or a fault that returns after a basic check.

This guide is written mainly for a central split-system air conditioner in a U.S. home. Window units, ductless mini-splits, heat pumps, packaged systems, and rooftop units may require different procedures. The exact equipment manual and local electrical, licensing, permit, warranty, and landlord requirements take precedence over generic advice.

Safety comes before diagnosis. Set the thermostat to Off before inspecting the system. If a procedure requires removing a panel, reaching near moving parts, or cleaning internal components, isolate the equipment at the appropriate disconnect or breaker and verify that it cannot start. Do not treat the thermostat’s Off setting as electrical isolation.

Do not open an electrical compartment, test live high-voltage components, replace a capacitor or contactor, bypass a safety switch, reach into an outdoor condenser, or work on a rooftop unit unless you have the training and procedures to do so safely. Capacitors and other components can retain stored energy even after power is disconnected. Unexpected startup or stored energy can cause electrocution, burns, crushing, and cutting injuries.

Quick diagnosis: match the symptom to the safest next step

Symptom Safe first checks Call for professional service when
Nothing runs Check the thermostat mode, setpoint, batteries, HVAC breaker, and outdoor disconnect. The breaker trips again, there is a burning smell or visible damage, or the system remains unresponsive after the basic checks.
The indoor blower runs, but the outdoor unit does not Confirm that the thermostat is calling for cooling. Check the breaker, disconnect position, and visible debris around the condenser. Electrical-compartment, contactor, capacitor, control, fan-motor, or compressor diagnosis is needed.
Airflow is weak Inspect or replace the filter, open supply and return grilles, check visible dampers, and look for ice. Ice returns, airflow remains poor with a clean filter, or a blower, duct, or coil problem is suspected.
The system blows warm air Check the thermostat, filter, outdoor-unit operation, condenser clearance, and signs of ice. Refrigerant, compressor, metering-device, electrical, or control problems are possible.
Ice forms on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil Turn cooling off, let the ice melt, replace a dirty filter if necessary, and confirm that grilles are open. Ice returns or the system still has poor airflow after thawing and basic checks.
Water leaks indoors Turn the system off if water threatens electrical equipment. Inspect only an accessible pan and drain area. There is standing water, a cracked pan, an inaccessible drain, an activated overflow switch, or repeated blockage.
The system runs continuously or short-cycles Check the filter, setpoint, airflow, open doors and windows, and visible ice. The problem continues or equipment sizing, refrigerant, electrical, or control faults may be involved.

Step 1: Check the thermostat

  1. Confirm the mode is set to Cool, not Off, Heat, or Fan Only.
  2. Set the target temperature below the current room temperature so the system has a reason to run.
  3. Replace the batteries if the thermostat uses them.
  4. Check whether a schedule, vacation setting, lockout, or software alert is preventing a cooling call.
  5. Understand the fan setting. Auto normally runs the indoor blower only during a heating or cooling call; On can run the blower continuously and may make a cooling problem appear different.

Observe what happens when cooling is requested. Record whether the indoor blower starts, whether the outdoor condenser starts, whether neither unit responds, and whether a fault code appears. That information will make a service call more efficient.

Step 2: Inspect the air filter and airflow

A dirty filter is one of the most common causes of weak airflow, long run times, poor cooling, and evaporator-coil icing. A restricted filter can also increase energy use, strain the equipment, and contribute to premature failure.

  1. Locate the filter at the return grille, furnace cabinet, or air-handler slot.
  2. Check the size printed on the existing filter and note the airflow arrow.
  3. Replace a disposable filter with one of the correct dimensions, installed with the arrow pointing in the direction of airflow.
  4. Clean a reusable filter only according to its manufacturer’s instructions, then reinstall it fully dry.
  5. Check that return grilles and supply registers are open and unobstructed by furniture, rugs, curtains, or stored items.
  6. Look for closed dampers or visibly crushed, disconnected, or damaged ductwork, but do not dismantle the duct system to investigate.

Before ordering a correct-size HVAC air filter, verify the nominal size printed on the old filter or listed in the equipment documentation. Do not force an incorrectly sized filter into the slot. A filter with a higher MERV rating is not automatically better if the system cannot move enough air through it; compatibility with the equipment’s airflow requirements matters.

ENERGY STAR consumer guidance recommends inspecting, cleaning, or changing central-AC filters monthly. Homes with construction dust, pets, smoke, or other heavy particle loads may need more frequent attention, but the filter and equipment manufacturer remain the best source for the exact schedule.

Step 3: Check power without opening the equipment

If the system is completely dead, a tripped breaker or outdoor disconnect may be the cause. Only perform these checks if you are comfortable doing so and there is no sign of an electrical hazard.

  1. Look at the electrical panel for the breaker labeled HVAC, air conditioner, furnace, or air handler.
  2. Inspect the outdoor disconnect for an obvious Off position. Do not remove its cover or touch exposed wiring.
  3. If a breaker is tripped and there is no burning smell, visible damage, water intrusion, smoke, or arcing, it may be reset once by moving it firmly to Off and then On.
  4. If it trips again immediately, leave it off and arrange professional diagnosis. Do not keep resetting it.

A breaker that trips repeatedly can indicate a short circuit, grounded wire, failed capacitor, locked compressor, damaged motor, or another serious problem. The breaker is a protective device, not a repair switch.

Step 4: Clear debris around the outdoor condenser

With the system turned off and electrical power isolated when appropriate, remove loose leaves, grass, plastic, and other debris from around the outdoor condenser. Maintain the clearance specified by the equipment manufacturer. Do not bend the coil fins, use a pressure washer, or spray water into electrical compartments.

  • PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA: Manufactured using high-quality materials in American facilities to ensure dependable performance, sustainable production, and cleaner indoor air you can trust.

Good clearance helps the condenser reject heat, but clearing debris will not repair a failed fan motor, contactor, capacitor, compressor, damaged coil, or refrigerant problem. If the outdoor fan does not run, makes a grinding or buzzing sound, or starts and stops abnormally, keep the system off and call a qualified HVAC technician rather than opening the cabinet.

Step 5: Deal with ice safely

Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor evaporator coil usually means the system is not absorbing or moving heat correctly. Possible causes include restricted airflow, a dirty coil, low refrigerant from a leak, a metering problem, or another mechanical fault.

  1. Turn cooling off at the thermostat.
  2. Allow the ice to melt naturally. Do not chip it off with a tool or use an open flame or high heat to thaw it.
  3. Protect floors and nearby materials from meltwater.
  4. Inspect or replace a dirty filter and confirm that supply and return grilles are open.
  5. Do not restart cooling until the ice has melted completely.

If the ice returns, the filter is clean, or airflow remains weak, professional diagnosis is required. Running an air conditioner while the coil is frozen can worsen the problem and prevents meaningful diagnosis. Do not attempt to add refrigerant from a retail can or connect service gauges. Refrigerant charging does not fix the underlying cause if the system has a leak or another fault.

Step 6: Check for condensate drainage problems

Air conditioning removes moisture from indoor air. That water normally flows through a condensate pan and drain line. Water near the indoor unit, a full pan, or an overflow switch that has shut the system down can indicate a clogged drain, frozen coil, disconnected pipe, or damaged pan.

There may be little or no water at the exterior drain termination during dry weather or low humidity, so the absence of visible discharge alone does not prove that the drain is blocked. Look for standing water, staining, a sagging or disconnected drain pipe, and water near electrical equipment.

A homeowner may clear an accessible, clearly identified drain opening only when the equipment is de-energized and the owner’s manual permits the procedure. If the exterior termination is accessible and there is no electrical or water hazard, a wet/dry vacuum for AC drain line can sometimes be used to pull debris from the drain termination. Keep the procedure limited to the accessible opening, protect the surrounding area, and test that water flows afterward if the manual describes a safe test.

Stop immediately if the drain pan is cracked, the line is inaccessible, an overflow safety has activated, water is close to electrical components, or the blockage returns. A wet/dry vacuum can clear an accessible obstruction; it cannot diagnose a frozen coil, failed condensate pump, bad slope, cracked pan, or underlying refrigerant or airflow fault.

Repeated short cycling means the system starts and stops unusually often instead of completing a normal cooling cycle. A dirty filter or restricted airflow can contribute, but so can an oversized system, thermostat or control problem, refrigerant issue, frozen coil, or electrical fault. A system that runs continuously without reaching the setpoint may have airflow, duct, insulation, building-envelope, refrigerant, capacity, or control problems. Basic checks are worthwhile, but persistent cycling or continuous operation needs measured diagnosis rather than repeated resets.

Repairs that should be left to a qualified HVAC professional

Do not attempt the following as a homeowner repair:

  • Charging, recovering, evacuating, or replacing refrigerant
  • Finding or repairing a refrigerant leak
  • Cutting or brazing refrigerant lines
  • Replacing a compressor or other sealed-system component
  • Connecting service gauges or interpreting live-system pressures without the required training
  • Replacing capacitors, contactors, control boards, blower motors, or compressor components
  • Testing high-voltage circuits or rewiring the equipment
  • Removing coils, opening electrical compartments, or bypassing a float switch, contactor, or other safety control

Under U.S. EPA Section 608 requirements, intentional venting of refrigerant during service, repair, or disposal is prohibited, and only certified technicians may use non-exempt refrigerants to service stationary air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Refrigerant for stationary appliances is sold only to certified technicians or the companies that employ them. Local rules may add licensing or permit requirements.

What about an old R-22 air conditioner?

An existing R-22 system may continue operating; homeowners are not automatically required to replace or convert every R-22 unit. However, an alternative refrigerant generally is not a simple substitute. A retrofit can require system changes and must be performed by a qualified technician. Ask the technician to identify the refrigerant type and explain whether repair, retrofit, or replacement is the most practical option.

  • The equipment model and serial numbers, usually found on the outdoor condenser and indoor air handler or furnace
  • The refrigerant designation if it is printed on the outdoor nameplate or listed in the owner’s manual
  • When the problem began and whether it is intermittent
  • Whether the indoor blower, outdoor condenser, or neither unit operates
  • The thermostat mode, setpoint, room temperature, and any displayed fault code
  • When the filter was last changed and whether airflow is weak
  • Whether you saw ice, water, unusual noises, odors, or repeated breaker trips
  • Photos of the nameplate, thermostat display, ice, water damage, or visible exterior conditions

When refrigerant or electrical work is involved, ask whether the technician is EPA Section 608-certified. Ask what fault was measured, whether a leak was found, whether the proposed work addresses the cause rather than only adding refrigerant, and whether the repair is covered by a manufacturer or labor warranty. Do not authorize a refrigerant “top-off” without asking why the charge is low and how the leak or other cause will be addressed.

If your symptoms point to a sealed-system, electrical, or recurring fault, find an EPA Section 608-certified HVAC technician rather than attempting a high-risk repair. Certification does not by itself guarantee workmanship, so also verify applicable state or local licensing, insurance, references, and warranty terms.

Repair or replace?

A repair is not always the best long-term answer, particularly when an older system has repeated failures, poor comfort, high operating costs, or a major sealed-system or compressor problem. EPA guidance recommends having older equipment—especially equipment more than 10 years old or no longer keeping the home comfortable—evaluated by a professional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the cost and expected service life of the repair with replacement options. Consider the refrigerant type, parts availability, efficiency, warranty, duct condition, electrical requirements, and whether the system is correctly sized. Do not solve a comfort problem by automatically installing a larger unit: major duct leaks, building air leaks, inadequate insulation, and poor distribution can also cause long runtimes and uneven temperatures. If replacement is appropriate, ask about properly sized ENERGY STAR equipment and improvements to significant duct or building-envelope leaks.

Maintenance that prevents avoidable failures

  • Monthly: Inspect the filter and clean or replace it as directed. Check that returns and supply grilles remain unobstructed.
  • Regularly: Keep loose leaves, grass, and stored items away from the outdoor condenser. Watch for new water, ice, unusual sounds, and changing airflow.
  • When performance changes: Do not wait for a complete failure. Arrange professional attention if cooling weakens, runtime increases, short cycling begins, or the same drain or icing problem returns.
  • During professional maintenance: Have the technician evaluate coil cleanliness, refrigerant condition, blower components, controls, electrical operation, condensate drainage, and airflow. Exact maintenance intervals should follow the equipment manufacturer and local conditions.

Manufacturer instructions are especially important for mini-splits, heat pumps, packaged units, rooftop equipment, variable-speed systems, and systems with specialized filters or controls. Never use a chemical coil cleaner, fin comb, or other accessory on an unfamiliar unit unless the manual specifically permits it and you understand how to protect electrical parts and manage runoff.

U.S. source and scope note

The safety and refrigerant boundaries in this guide reflect guidance from OSHA, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ENERGY STAR, and Carrier homeowner troubleshooting materials. EPA rules cited here are U.S. federal requirements; they do not replace local licensing, electrical-code, permit, warranty, or landlord requirements. The guidance does not claim that every central AC, heat pump, mini-split, window unit, or packaged system has the same components or service procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recharge my home’s air conditioner myself?

No. Refrigerant charging, recovery, leak repair, evacuation, and refrigerant-line work should be performed by a qualified technician. In the U.S., EPA Section 608 rules restrict who may service stationary air-conditioning equipment with non-exempt refrigerants, and adding refrigerant does not repair the leak that caused a low charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my air conditioner freeze up?

Common possibilities include restricted airflow, a dirty filter or coil, low refrigerant caused by a leak, a metering problem, or another fault. Turn cooling off and let the ice melt. Replace a dirty filter and open blocked grilles. If ice returns, arrange professional diagnosis.

What should I do if the AC breaker keeps tripping?

Reset it no more than once, and only if there is no burning smell, smoke, visible damage, water intrusion, or arcing. If it trips again, leave it off. Repeated trips can indicate a serious electrical or compressor problem.

How often should I change the central-AC filter?

Inspect it monthly and clean or replace it according to the filter and equipment manufacturer’s instructions. Dust, pets, smoke, construction work, and other conditions may require more frequent replacement. Always verify the correct size, airflow direction, and system compatibility.

Does an R-22 air conditioner have to be replaced?

Not automatically. An existing R-22 system may continue operating, but alternative refrigerants generally are not direct substitutes. A retrofit requires system changes and qualified service. For an older, inefficient, repeatedly failing, or uncomfortable system, compare repair, retrofit, and replacement options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with the low-risk checks: thermostat, filter, open grilles, one careful breaker check, outdoor clearance, ice, and accessible condensate drainage. Do not open electrical compartments or work on refrigerant circuits. If the problem returns, the breaker trips, water threatens equipment, or the symptom involves unusual noise, odor, high voltage, refrigerant, or sealed-system components, turn the system off and schedule qualified HVAC diagnosis.
