Test a small area first, then progress from dry peeling to controlled moisture, commercial stripper, or steam only when necessary.
Most wallpaper comes off with the least aggressive method that matches its construction: first test whether it peels, then try controlled moisture, commercial stripper, and finally steam for stubborn or multilayer coverings. Do not begin by soaking or steaming the entire wall. Test a small, inconspicuous area so you can identify the paper, backing, adhesive, and condition of the wall underneath.

Choose the method by what the wallpaper does
| What you observe | Best starting method | Important adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| The surface lifts and comes away in clean strips | Peel it dry | Use a scraper only for edges and residue |
| The printed face comes off but paper backing remains | Hot-water soak | Work in small sections and re-wet as needed |
| Water beads on the surface | Score or remove the nonporous face first | Then use water or liquid stripper |
| Water alone barely softens the adhesive | liquid or gel wallpaper stripper | Follow the product’s dwell time |
| Several layers or hardened adhesive resist other methods | wallpaper steamer | Use short applications and protect yourself from burns |
Before removing any wallpaper
- Move furniture away from the wall and cover floors with drop cloths. Use painter’s tape to protect trim and other areas that should stay dry.
- Turn off power to outlets or switches in the work area if water or steam could reach them. Do not spray directly around electrical boxes.
- Gather a putty knife or wallpaper scraper, sponge or spray bottle, clean water, and a bucket. Add a scoring tool, commercial stripper, or steamer only if the test area shows that you need one.
- Wear gloves and eye protection. Steam and stripper require extra care: use ventilation and follow the product or machine instructions.
- Test the wall in a hidden spot. Older, painted-over, multilayer, or poorly installed wallpaper may not behave like modern removable wallpaper.
1. Peel removable or strippable wallpaper
Dry removal is the simplest and least damaging approach when it works. At a corner, seam, or loose edge, slide a putty knife under the covering and lift a small section. Once you can grip it, pull slowly and as parallel to the wall as practical rather than pulling sharply outward.
If the face comes away cleanly, continue by hand. Use the scraper for narrow pieces around trim, corners, and seams or for small areas of adhesive. Keep the blade relatively flat and use light pressure; a sharp corner can gouge drywall.

Stop forcing the paper if a thin backing remains attached. Repeatedly tearing at it can remove the drywall’s paper surface. Move to the hot-water, stripper, or steam method instead. Strippable wallpaper is designed to release more readily than traditional wallpaper, but the label, age, paint layers, and installation adhesive all affect the result.
2. Soak porous paper or backing with hot water
Hot water is a practical next step for porous wallpaper and paper backing. Work on an area small enough to wet, soften, and scrape before it dries—roughly a few square feet at a time is a useful starting point.
- Score the surface only if water cannot penetrate it. Use light pressure; the purpose is to perforate the wallcovering, not cut into the drywall.
- Apply hot water with a sponge, cloth, or spray bottle. Keep it controlled rather than flooding the wall.
- Wait for the paper to darken, wrinkle, or begin to release. The time varies with the paper, adhesive, paint, and wall surface.
- Lift the softened paper with a broad, angled scraper. Re-wet stubborn areas instead of increasing force.
- Remove softened adhesive while it is workable, then wipe the area with clean water.
Some DIY instructions use a small amount of vinegar or fabric softener mixed with hot water. Treat these as optional household approaches, not universal or manufacturer-approved formulas. They may not improve every adhesive, and any solution still needs to be tested in a small area first. Excess moisture can swell drywall, loosen its paper face, stain adjacent materials, or run into electrical openings.

Washable and vinyl-coated wallpaper often resists soaking because its surface is not porous. If water beads instead of penetrating, score the covering or peel away its vinyl face first. Then apply water to the paper backing.
3. Use liquid or gel wallpaper stripper
Commercial wallpaper stripper is a controlled escalation when water alone is slow or the adhesive is particularly resistant. Protect floors, furniture, trim, and other porous surfaces before applying it.
- Perforate nonporous wallpaper with a scoring tool, using enough pressure to open the surface without cutting the wall.
- Apply the liquid or gel by spray or sponge in manageable sections. Do not coat more wall than you can work before it dries.
- Allow the product to dwell according to its label. Zinsser’s DIF guidance describes waiting approximately five to ten minutes, then reapplying or scoring when the covering still does not release.
- Scrape the softened paper and adhesive with a wallpaper scraper. Keep the blade broad and relatively flat.
- Apply a second treatment to stubborn residue if the label permits. Sponge away the remaining adhesive and rinse with clean water.
Ventilate the room and use chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection as directed by the product instructions. Do not mix stripper with bleach, ammonia, or other cleaners. Keep the wall only as wet as necessary, particularly where drywall is exposed.
4. Steam stubborn or multilayer wallpaper
A wallpaper steamer uses hot water vapor to soften adhesive from behind the paper. It is most useful when dry peeling, soaking, or liquid stripper has failed—especially with old, layered wallpaper or hardened adhesive. It is not automatically the fastest or safest option: steam can burn skin and can damage drywall if held in one place too long.

- Set up the wallpaper steamer according to its manual. Fill it with the specified water and allow it to heat fully.
- Start at the top of the wall. Hold the steam plate against a small section until the adhesive softens, then move the plate to the next section.
- As soon as a section releases, lift it with a scraper. Avoid prying aggressively while the adhesive is still hard.
- Use short applications. Sherwin-Williams advises holding the plate for no longer than about 30 seconds at a time; actual timing depends on the covering, adhesive, wall surface, and machine.
- Wipe away softened adhesive and let the wall cool and dry before inspecting it.
For vinyl or washable wallpaper, score the surface or remove the vinyl face first so steam can reach the paper backing. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep the hot plate and hose away from skin, and follow the steamer manufacturer’s instructions. For a single room or one-time project, renting a steamer may make more sense than purchasing one; availability and rental terms vary by location.
How to remove wallpaper adhesive
Removing the visible paper is only half the job. A thin layer of paste can cause paint to blister or create ridges beneath new wallpaper.
- Apply warm water or the appropriate stripper to remaining adhesive in small sections.
- Let it soften, then sponge or scrape it away without digging into the wall.
- Rinse with clean water so chemical or paste residue does not remain.
- Change dirty rinse water frequently and keep runoff off trim and flooring.
- Allow the wall to dry completely before sanding, priming, painting, or installing new wallcovering.
Repair the wall after removal
Inspect the dry wall in strong side light. Look for gouges, raised seams, loose drywall paper, paste residue, and areas where the surface has become rough or swollen.

Important precaution in homes built before 1978
The concern is not that wallpaper itself necessarily contains lead. In an older home, painted surfaces beneath or beside the wallpaper may contain lead, and scraping, sanding, cutting, or steaming work can disturb that paint and create chips or dust.

- The paper peels in large, clean strips.
- Continue dry removal. Use the scraper only for residue, seams, and small fragments.
- The outer layer comes off but the backing remains.
- Wet the backing with hot water or apply commercial stripper. Steam is a later escalation if the backing and adhesive remain stubborn.
- Water beads on the surface.
- The covering is likely washable or vinyl-coated. Score it lightly or remove the nonporous face, then wet the paper layer.
- Commercial stripper is not working.
- Check that the surface was perforated, allow the label’s full dwell time, and reapply in smaller sections. Do not simply scrape harder.
- Several layers or hardened adhesive resist soaking.
- Try a steamer carefully, or consider professional help if the wall is fragile, the area is large, or painted surfaces may contain lead.
- The wall is gouged or drywall paper is exposed.
- Stop aggressive scraping. Let the wall dry, patch the damage, sand as appropriate, and prime before finishing.
- The wall stays damp or drywall begins to swell.
- Stop adding water or steam, improve ventilation, and allow the surface to dry fully. Repair damaged drywall before proceeding.
Basic supply checklist
- Drop cloths and painter’s tape
- Putty knife or broad wallpaper scraper
- Wallpaper scoring tool for nonporous coverings
- Hot water, sponge, cloth, spray bottle, and bucket
- Optional vinegar- or fabric-softener-based soaking solution, used cautiously and tested first
- Liquid or gel wallpaper stripper
- Wallpaper steamer for stubborn or multilayered coverings
- Rubber or chemical-resistant gloves and protective eyewear
- Joint compound or sandable filler, sandpaper, and primer
Bottom line
Start at a seam with a dry-peel test. If the wallpaper releases cleanly, keep working by hand. If backing remains, soften it with controlled moisture; use scoring when a vinyl or washable surface blocks penetration. Move to commercial stripper for resistant adhesive and reserve steam for stubborn, old, or multilayer wallpaper. At every stage, re-wet or re-steam rather than applying more force, protect the wall from excess moisture, and take lead-safety precautions before disturbing paint in a pre-1978 home.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest way to remove wallpaper?
Start by lifting a corner or seam with a putty knife. If the wallpaper comes away in clean strips, continue peeling it dry. If backing remains, the surface resists water, or the adhesive is hardened, switch to soaking, commercial stripper, or steam as appropriate.
Can I remove wallpaper with just hot water?
Yes, but only for porous wallpaper or exposed paper backing. Vinyl-coated and washable wallpaper can repel water, so score the surface lightly or remove its nonporous face first. Avoid flooding drywall.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When should I use a wallpaper steamer?
Steam is useful for old, multilayered wallpaper and adhesive that resists soaking or stripper. It is not always the safest or fastest method, and holding the plate in one place too long can burn you or damage drywall.
Does wallpaper removal create a lead-paint risk?
The concern is painted material beneath or beside the wallpaper, not automatically the wallpaper itself. In a pre-1978 home, scraping, sanding, cutting, or other work may disturb lead-based paint. Consider certified lead-safety advice before proceeding.
The Bottom Line
Use the least aggressive method that works: peel first, soak porous paper, apply stripper for resistant adhesive, and steam only when other methods fail. Protect drywall from excess moisture and force, repair and prime the wall afterward, and evaluate lead-safe requirements before disturbing painted surfaces in a pre-1978 home.
