1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMany Samsung top-load washers use a removable center agitator secured beneath a cap by a retaining fastener. The usual process is to unplug the washer, remove the cap and fastener, then lift the agitator straight up. However, Samsung uses several top-load designs, and some models have a low-profile wash plate or impeller instead. Confirm the full model number and follow its repair guide before applying force.
Before You Remove Anything
Find the complete model number, including suffixes such as /A4, /US, or regional codes. The label is commonly found around the lid opening, on the rear cabinet, or on a side or rear panel. Use Samsung’s washer support page to locate the matching manual, warranty information, repair options, and model-specific documentation.

Samsung provides repair-guide and manual downloads for multiple models, including the WA51DG5505AVUS, WA44A3205AW/A4, and WA46CG3505AVA4. A guide for one model should not be assumed to apply to another.
Check warranty coverage before disassembling the washer. Coverage depends on the model, region, purchase date, and component, and owner-performed disassembly can complicate a later service claim.

Agitator or Wash Plate?
A tall agitator is the central post with fins or vanes extending upward from the bottom of the basket. Many Samsung models call this an ActiveWave agitator.
A wash plate, pulsator, or impeller is a low, disk-shaped component at the bottom of the tub. It does not use the same removal procedure as a tall agitator. Samsung product literature includes both ActiveWave agitator and impeller-equipped top-load designs, so compare the physical component with your model documentation before starting. See Samsung’s product information on agitator and impeller models.
Tools and Preparation
- Plastic trim tool or small flat-blade screwdriver
- Ratchet and the correctly sized socket or nut driver
- Extension bar if the fastener is recessed
- Flashlight
- Sturdy or cut-resistant work gloves
- Soft brush, microfiber cloth, and mild detergent
- Small container for the cap, bolt, washer, spacer, and seal
Do not assume the fastener is 10 mm. That size is reported for some Samsung models, but it is not universal. Verify the size in the matching guide or against the removed fastener.
Recommended Free Tools
Before work begins:
- Photograph the agitator, cap, fastener, and any visible washers or seals.
- Unplug the washer from the wall; do not rely only on the control-panel power button.
- Turn off the water supplies if the washer must be moved.
- Remove all laundry and standing water.
- Open the lid, provide good lighting, and keep small parts together.
How to Remove a Samsung Washer Agitator
1. Confirm the model and fastener arrangement
Read the model-specific repair guide before prying off the cap or choosing a socket. Many Samsung agitators use a center fastener beneath a removable cap, but the cap style, bolt, washer, seal, and access method can vary.

2. Remove the top cap
Inspect the top of the agitator for a round center cap, small access cover, softener or dispenser assembly, seam, or molded release point. Use a plastic trim tool where possible. If a screwdriver is necessary, protect nearby plastic with tape and apply light, controlled pressure.
Do not pry against the basket, tub, or agitator fins. If the cap does not release, stop and check whether it is clipped, threaded, or part of a dispenser assembly. Forcing the wrong seam can crack the cap.
3. Remove the retaining fastener
With the cap removed, look for the bolt, nut, washer, spacer, or seal. Seat the correct socket fully, keep it square to the fastener, and turn counterclockwise unless the model guide says otherwise. Use steady pressure rather than a sudden jerk. If the agitator rotates, have someone stabilize it or use the model-approved method for holding it.

4. Lift the agitator
Once the fastener is completely removed, grip the agitator with both hands and pull vertically and evenly. A gentle side-to-side rocking motion may help release normal friction. Do not twist aggressively, lever against the basket, or insert screwdrivers beneath the agitator.
If it will not lift, check for a second fastener, remaining washer or spacer, an insert, a hidden locking arrangement, or corrosion binding the shaft. Do not escalate to heat, drilling, an impact tool, or a puller unless the exact service procedure supports it.
5. Inspect before cleaning
Check the agitator and shaft for:
- Cracked plastic or a damaged hub
- Stripped splines or teeth
- A bent, damaged, or corroded bolt
- Missing washers, spacers, or seals
- Corrosion on the drive shaft
- Detergent, lint, hair, coins, or fabric trapped beneath the agitator
Photograph the assembly before removing any additional component.

Cleaning the Agitator and Hidden Area
Use a soft brush, microfiber cloth, and mild detergent solution. Avoid abrasive powders, strong solvents, metal tools against plastic, and heat guns. Keep excess water away from electrical components and allow parts to dry completely before reassembly.

A Self Clean cycle may help with general washer maintenance, but it does not necessarily clean the hidden mechanical interface beneath a removed agitator. Samsung documentation for models such as the WA46CG3505 includes Self Clean, but that feature is not a substitute for inspecting an accessible underside when an object or buildup is trapped there.
What to Do When Something Goes Wrong
The cap will not come off
Possible causes include hidden clips, a threaded cap, detergent residue, or an incorrect pry point. Recheck the model guide, inspect for molded release slots, and try a plastic trim tool with controlled pressure. Stop before the cap cracks.
The bolt will not loosen
Confirm the socket size and keep it square to the bolt. Stabilize the agitator if it turns. Corrosion, cross-threading, factory over-tightening, or an incorrect tool may be responsible. A small amount of penetrating lubricant may be appropriate only where the model procedure permits it; keep lubricant away from plastic, seals, and the tub. Stop before rounding the fastener.

The agitator is loose but still will not lift
The bolt may still be partially engaged, a spacer may remain, or corrosion may have seized the hub to the shaft. Pull vertically and gently only after confirming that every retaining component has been removed. Owner reports describe seized Samsung agitators, but such reports are anecdotal and do not replace the model-specific guide.

The bolt or cap falls into the tub
Do not run the washer. Recover the part with a suitable tool if it is safely accessible, or have the washer inspected. A loose metal fastener can damage the basket, pump, motor, or tub.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to Reinstall the Agitator
- Align the agitator with the shaft splines or locating features.
- Seat it fully without forcing it at an angle.
- Replace the washer, spacer, seal, and retaining fastener in their original order.
- Tighten the fastener to the model’s specified torque if the guide provides one. Do not guess from another Samsung model or appliance brand.
- Replace a fastener that is damaged, deformed, or badly corroded, or replace it when the model guide requires a new one.
- Refit the cap until it is flush and secure.
A bolt that feels “tight” may still be incorrectly tightened if the model requires a specified torque or replacement fastener.
Test Before Washing Clothes
- With power still disconnected, check that the agitator is seated and does not scrape or wobble.
- Confirm the cap is flush and secure.
- Run a short rinse or test cycle with no clothing.
- Watch for leaks, grinding, unusual vibration, slipping, or failure to agitate.
- Stop immediately if the agitator rises, slips, or contacts the basket.
When to Stop and Call a Technician
Professional service is the safer choice when:
- The model cannot be identified.
- The agitator is seized to the shaft.
- The bolt head is stripped or would require drilling or an impact tool.
- The hub is cracked or the shaft is bent or heavily corroded.
- The basket, cabinet, suspension, wiring, or other internal components must be removed.
- The washer is under warranty and disassembly could affect a claim.
- The washer leaks or operates abnormally after reassembly.
Use Samsung’s washer support and repair-scheduling page when the job goes beyond a simple, model-approved removal. Removing the agitator also will not fix every washer problem: poor draining, failure to spin, severe vibration, and grinding can involve the pump, suspension, motor, clutch, bearing, or controls.
Finding the Correct Replacement Part
Use the exact model number when ordering an agitator, cap, bolt, washer, seal, or related component. Samsung Parts USA provides a washer-parts collection and an exploded-view lookup. A visually similar part may not fit the shaft or match the required fastener, so verify compatibility before buying.
For a simple cleaning job, removal may be worthwhile if the assembly releases normally. For a seized hub, damaged shaft, stripped fastener, or warranty-sensitive washer, professional repair is usually the lower-risk option.
