Worm-Like Robot Could Install Power-Line Conduit Underground—But It’s Still in Development

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A worm-inspired robot for underground power infrastructure is real, but it is not yet a commercially deployed replacement for trenching or horizontal directional drilling. Case Western Reserve University is developing a flexible “peristaltic conduit” that could burrow through soil, avoid obstacles and install conduit as it advances. The federally funded project remains active research and development, not routine utility construction.

Why utilities are interested in underground power lines

Buried distribution lines are less exposed than overhead wires to wind, ice, falling trees and flying debris. Undergrounding can also reduce exposure to some wildfire ignition hazards, remove poles from visually sensitive areas and make routing beneath roads or developed corridors more practical.

The potential need is substantial. The U.S. Department of Energy says the country’s electric distribution system includes more than 5.5 million line-miles and more than 180 million power poles, many exposed to weather and vegetation damage. Undergrounding is not a universal solution, however. Buried lines can be harder to inspect, locate and repair, and failures may require excavation or specialized equipment.

The main obstacle is construction cost and disruption. Open trenches can affect traffic, sidewalks, landscaping, drainage and other utilities. Trenchless drilling reduces surface excavation, but it requires specialized equipment and careful subsurface planning.

What the Case Western Reserve robot is

The project most closely associated with the “worm-like robot” is being developed by Case Western Reserve University mechanical-engineering professor Kathryn Daltorio.

It is better understood as a robotic conduit-installation sleeve than as a conventional autonomous drilling vehicle. The proposed machine is made from multiple linked or segmented sections. Those sections can change length and diameter:

  1. One section expands and grips the walls of the developing passage.
  2. Another section extends forward.
  3. The forward section anchors while the rear section contracts and advances.
  4. The cycle repeats, sending a traveling wave through the robot.

This is called peristaltic locomotion. It is inspired by the way an earthworm moves, but the machine is not biological and does not need to resemble an actual worm. “Worm-like” mainly describes its method of movement.

The Case project’s central concept is to install conduit while the robot burrows. The electrical cable would generally be installed or pulled through that conduit in a later construction step unless future project documentation specifies another arrangement. It should not be described as a machine currently laying energized power lines.

How peristaltic movement could help underground construction

A rigid drill string typically follows a comparatively broad curve. The Case project describes a potential turning radius of about five feet, or 1.5 meters, compared with conventional methods whose turning radii can exceed 1,000 feet, or 300 meters. These are project targets or potential specifications—not demonstrated utility-scale results.

Underground Wire Locator, Electrical Wire Tracer for Locate Buried Cable
  • 【Accurate Tracking】Locate and trace buried and hidden wires quickly and efficiently. The underground wire locator helps identify cable direction and position, ideal for tracking underground sprinkler wires, invisible fence wires, buried wall cables, and communication lines. Avoid blind digging and save landscaping repair cost.
  • 【Long Tracking Range】Underground cable locator achieve long-distance cable tracking up to 1000 ft (305 m). In open muddy environments, the target wire can be detected at depths up to 3 ft (1 m). In environments such as steel pipes, iron pipes and PVC pipes, the signal will attenuate at a depth of 1 to 2 feet. If cable signal is weak, attach black alligator clip to metal screwdriver inserted into moist soil to boost signal reception.
  • 【Designed for Single & Dual Core Cables】Designed for locating non-energized wires only, for tracing single-core and dual-core wires, helping reduce signal interference and misjudgment. Not suitable for multi-core, bundled, or stranded wires, which may cause crosstalk between target and non-target cables.
  • 【Built in Flashlight & Headphone Jack】Wire tracer equipped with built-in LED flashlight improves visibility in dark areas such as basements, ceilings, walls, and outdoor environments; independent headphone jack blocks ambient noise for quiet cable tracing in busy yards. Transmitter supports 1-30V battery polarity test to check positive/negative poles.
  • 【Wide Applications】Built-in rechargeable battery for convenient daily use, comes with transmitter, receiver, alligator clip leads, storage toolkit, headphone, user manual; Compact and durable design fits easily in tool bags, ideal for electricians, landscapers, irrigation technicians & DIY homeowners.

A tighter turning radius could help a machine route around existing pipes, cables, foundations and other obstacles. Its flexibility could also reduce the force transferred to an obstacle and allow the robot to retreat and redirect if a route becomes impassable.

That advantage has limits. Maneuverability is not the same as reliable obstacle detection. A flexible robot cannot safely avoid a water main or gas line it cannot locate. The broader ARPA-E GOPHURRS program includes separate work on underground imaging, geophysical mapping and look-ahead sensing, indicating that subsurface detection remains a major engineering challenge.

Why the project could reduce disruption

Conventional open-cut construction usually involves excavating a trench, installing conduit or cable, adding protective materials, backfilling, restoring the surface and then pulling, splicing and testing the cable.

Horizontal directional drilling, or HDD, generally involves drilling a pilot hole, enlarging it with a reamer, pulling conduit through the finished bore and pulling cable through the conduit afterward. HDD can be effective for road, rail and waterway crossings, but it requires specialized equipment, has geometric limitations and can be difficult in congested or poorly mapped ground.

The GOPHURRS program is designed to address some of these inefficiencies in medium-voltage distribution construction. Its goal is to combine burrowing, propulsion, obstacle avoidance and conduit installation rather than treating drilling and conduit placement as entirely separate operations.

  • Less surface excavation and restoration.
  • Smaller equipment footprints in dense neighborhoods.
  • Tighter routing around existing infrastructure.
  • Fewer separate construction steps.
  • Lower traffic-control and community-disruption costs.

Those are potential benefits, not verified commercial results. IEEE Spectrum reports that the Case team aims to reduce undergrounding costs substantially, but a cost target is not the same as a demonstrated cost per foot.

The separate GE Vernova SPEEDWORM project

Case Western Reserve’s peristaltic conduit is not the same machine as GE Vernova’s SPEEDWORM. Both projects received funding through ARPA-E’s GOPHURRS program and use worm-inspired undergrounding concepts, but they have different developers, designs and project descriptions.

According to the ARPA-E SPEEDWORM project page, GE Vernova’s project has an award of $3,674,998 and a stated target of installing 1,000 feet of cable and conduit in two hours, potentially from equipment deployable by a standard pickup truck. That is a proposed project performance target and applies to SPEEDWORM—not automatically to the Case robot.

By comparison, ARPA-E lists the Case Western Reserve project at $2,072,952. Its active project period is listed as May 16, 2024, through May 15, 2027. SPEEDWORM is listed as active from May 17, 2024, through May 16, 2027. As of August 18, 2026, ARPA-E still labels both projects active.

What still has to be proven

A laboratory demonstration of worm-like movement would not by itself make the system ready for utility construction. The machine must generate enough force to move through real soil while surviving abrasion, moisture, grit, pressure and repeated loading.

Subsurface conditions

Field routes may contain rock, boulders, groundwater, unstable soil, tree roots, abandoned utilities, foundations and undocumented pipes. Soil resistance and friction could increase with bore length and prevent the robot from producing sufficient thrust.

Bore stability

The passage created by a flexible machine must remain stable long enough for the conduit and protective materials to meet engineering and utility requirements. A collapsed or distorted route could damage the conduit or make cable installation impossible.

Utility protection

The system would need accurate utility records, sensing, clearance rules and emergency procedures. Flexibility may reduce impact forces, but it does not eliminate the possibility of striking or deforming a gas line, water main, sewer, fiber duct or existing power cable.

Conduit and cable requirements

The finished installation must satisfy requirements for minimum bend radius, pulling tension, thermal performance, mechanical protection, moisture control, separation from other utilities, grounding and bonding. A robot’s ability to turn sharply is useful only if the completed conduit remains suitable for the cable inside it.

  • ILLUMINATION AND NCV FUNCTION: Receiver includes a built-in flashlight for low-light areas and a non-contact voltage (NCV) function to test wire energization, enhancing safety and visibility during tracing

Failure and recovery

Utilities would also need practical answers if the machine loses power, becomes stuck, suffers an actuator failure, encounters impenetrable material or damages its own conduit. The public project descriptions do not establish a complete field-recovery procedure, so recovery should be treated as an unresolved deployment issue rather than an assumed capability.

Where a worm-like installer could make sense

The technology appears most promising for specialized routes where surface disruption is unusually expensive or difficult, such as:

  • Dense urban and suburban corridors.
  • Road crossings and developed rights of way.
  • Areas with expensive pavement, landscaping or sidewalk restoration.
  • Routes with moderate obstacle complexity and reliable subsurface mapping.
  • Medium-voltage distribution projects within the GOPHURRS program’s stated 5–46 kV scope.

It is less obviously suited to very hard rock, highly unstable or saturated ground, long transmission corridors, large-diameter conduit installations or projects requiring immediate, proven construction performance.

It will not replace every undergrounding method

Method Strengths Limitations
Open-cut trenching Mature, familiar and adaptable Major excavation, traffic disruption and restoration costs
Horizontal directional drilling Established trenchless method for crossings and constrained sites Specialized equipment, planning complexity and restricted turning geometry
Peristaltic conduit robot Potentially tight turns, reduced excavation and concurrent conduit installation Still in development; field performance, sensing, recovery and cost remain unproven

The DOE-funded effort is also broader than these two worm-inspired projects. GOPHURRS supports work involving alternative drilling, underground sensing, autonomous installation, automated cable splicing and other biologically inspired tunneling approaches.

The bottom line

The worm-like undergrounding concept is legitimate federally funded engineering research, not a fictional gadget and not a product that utilities are already using nationwide. Case Western Reserve’s peristaltic conduit could eventually offer a compact way to burrow and install conduit while following tighter curves than conventional drilling.

But its commercial value will depend on repeatable field performance, safe utility detection, bore stability, recovery procedures, compliance with cable standards and total installed cost. For now, open trenching and HDD remain the practical methods. The robot represents a possible future specialist tool—not a current replacement for them.
