For removable hard-water deposits on uncoated glass, use white vinegar, gentle non-abrasive cleaning, thorough rinsing, and complete drying. Spray undiluted white vinegar generously over the glass, leave it for 8–10 minutes, gently scrub with a non-abrasive sponge, rinse with clean water, and dry with a microfiber cloth. If the glass remains uniformly cloudy after treatment, the problem may be etching rather than residue—and stronger scrubbing may make it worse.
What causes hard-water stains?
Hard-water stains form when water evaporates and leaves behind dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. On glass, they may look like white spots, a chalky film, streaks, or heavier mineral buildup. Regular cleaning helps prevent deposits from becoming more difficult to remove or progressing to permanent surface damage. Culligan explains how hard-water deposits form and how to treat them.

Before cleaning: identify the glass
Do not assume that every pane or shower enclosure can be cleaned with the same product. First determine whether the glass is:
- Uncoated glass: standard vinegar treatment is generally the appropriate starting point.
- Coated, tinted, or treated glass: follow the glass or enclosure manufacturer’s care instructions. Protective coatings can require specialized products or methods.
- Stained glass: identify whether the color was applied during manufacturing or painted onto the surface. CLR’s instructions allow its product only on glass colored during manufacture—not painted or subsequently coated glass—and it must not contact lead or the frame.
Protect frames, seals, hardware, painted surfaces, natural stone, and nearby finishes from acidic cleaners. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions and test a small, inconspicuous area first.

Best first method for uncoated glass
This procedure follows the current glass-cleaning guidance from Lowe’s:
- Fill a clean spray bottle with undiluted white vinegar.
- Spray the stained glass generously so the deposits are fully wet.
- Leave the vinegar on the surface for 8–10 minutes.
- Gently scrub in circular motions with a non-abrasive sponge.
- Rinse the glass thoroughly with clean water.
- Dry it completely with a clean microfiber cloth.
Do not substitute abrasive pads, scouring powders, steel wool, or aggressive scraping. They can scratch the glass or damage adjacent coatings and finishes.

An alternative vinegar treatment
Another published method uses equal parts warmed white vinegar and liquid dish soap. Apply the mixture, leave it for 10–15 minutes, wipe with a microfiber cloth, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely. This differs from the undiluted-vinegar method, so there is no single vinegar ratio or contact time that is safe and appropriate for every glass product. Surface-manufacturer instructions take priority.
For a coated shower product, for example, Pilkington OptiShower’s care guidance lists 50/50 water and white vinegar for routine hard-water cleaning and 80/20 water and citric acid as another routine option. It lists a vinegar-based cleaner for deep cleaning and a very soft abrasive cleaner used locally for stubborn stains. Follow the exact care instructions for the installed product rather than applying a generic recipe.

When vinegar does not remove the deposits
Repeat the vinegar treatment once or twice if the buildup is thick and clearly sitting on the surface. For stubborn deposits, use a non-abrasive cleaner specifically labeled for the type of glass. Do not simply increase scrubbing pressure or switch immediately to a harsh abrasive.
If the glass remains evenly cloudy, looks frosted, or has a hazy appearance rather than distinct spots, it may be etched. Calcium deposits can embed into or damage the glass surface. In that case, ordinary cleaners may not restore the original clarity. CLR’s product guidance distinguishes removable deposits from etched cloudiness and notes that some etching may have no remedy; jeweler’s polish is the only possible treatment it identifies for certain etched surfaces.

Using CLR Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover
Use a commercial acidic cleaner only when its label confirms that the glass and surrounding materials are compatible. CLR’s consumer instructions for hard-water deposits on glassware are:
- Mix equal parts CLR and warm water.
- Apply the mixture with a damp cloth or sponge.
- Leave it on the glass for no more than 2 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean, cold water.
- If deposits remain, repeat the treatment. CLR states that a subsequent application may be used at full strength, followed by thorough rinsing.
Spot-test first, work in a well-ventilated area, and never mix CLR with bleach or other household cleaners. Do not spray it directly onto stained glass. For stained glass, CLR specifies hand application with a damp cloth or sponge, a maximum two-minute contact time, cold-water rinsing, and no contact with lead or the frame. See CLR’s stained-glass cleaning instructions.

Surfaces CLR warns against
CLR warns against contact with wood, clothing, wallpaper, carpeting, natural stone, brass, copper, aluminum, galvanized metal, and painted, coated, or sealed surfaces. Older sinks, tubs, and tiles may be especially sensitive. On a shower enclosure, keep the cleaner away from metal hardware, seals, frames, stone surrounds, painted surfaces, and protective treatments.

- Do not use baking soda and vinegar as a default glass treatment. Lowe’s current baking-soda-and-vinegar instructions are for toilets; its glass procedure uses vinegar, a non-abrasive sponge, rinsing, and drying.
- Do not use abrasive pads or powders. These can scratch glass and damage coatings.
- Do not leave acidic cleaners on indefinitely. CLR’s stated maximum contact time is two minutes.
- Do not treat all cloudiness as removable residue. Etching may be permanent or require professional glass polishing.
- Do not ignore the surrounding construction materials. A cleaner that is suitable for glass may damage a frame, seal, stone sill, tile, or hardware.
Preventing hard-water stains from returning
Cleaning removes existing deposits but does not remove the calcium and magnesium in the water supply. After showers or wet-room use, remove standing water with a squeegee or soft microfiber cloth, then keep the glass dry. Clean regularly before mineral deposits become thick.

Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
| What you see | What to try | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Distinct white spots or a thin chalky film | Undiluted white vinegar for 8–10 minutes, gentle non-abrasive cleaning, rinsing, and drying | Abrasive pads and powders |
| Thick deposits that remain after one treatment | Repeat the treatment or use a compatible, glass-labeled non-abrasive cleaner | Increasing pressure or contact time without checking the label |
| Coated or treated shower glass | Use the manufacturer’s care instructions | Generic cleaners not approved for the coating |
| Uniform cloudiness that does not improve | Consider etching; consult the glass manufacturer or a professional | Stronger acids or harder scrubbing |
| Glass surrounded by metal, stone, seals, or painted finishes | Mask and protect adjacent materials, spot-test, and rinse promptly | Allowing acidic cleaner to contact surrounding surfaces |
