Cheap & Easy DIY Smartphone Tripod Mounts: What Works, What Fails, and How to Build Them

Yes, you can make a usable smartphone tripod mount from inexpensive hardware—but “universal” and “tested” are too strong. The tripod connection is commonly a 1/4"-20 UNC thread, while phone fit depends on the case, width, thickness, camera bump, buttons, and weight. For a quick temporary mount, a padded binder clip is the simplest option. For a more secure construction, a metal L-bracket or a wooden mount is preferable, provided you check lens clearance, adhesion, balance, and load capacity before trusting it with an expensive phone.

The designs below are based on published DIY plans and reported failure modes. The available sources do not provide standardized drop tests, vibration measurements, load ratings, or durability testing across phone models, so treat these as practical build ideas—not certified safety equipment.

First: understand the tripod connection

The common consumer tripod interface is 1/4"-20 UNC: a nominal 1/4-inch diameter and 20 threads per inch. The “20” does not mean a 20-mm thread or pitch. The wording “1/4 × 20 mm” is incorrect or ambiguous. See the explanations at Photo Stack Exchange and this tripod-fitting discussion.

This standard only describes the connection between the tripod and the mount. It does not make every phone fit every mount. Before building, measure the phone with its case installed and check:

Smartphone Holder/Vertical and Horizontal Tripod Mount Adapter | Premium Rotatable Bracket, 1/4 in Screw, Adjustable Clip for iPhone, Android Cell Phone, Selfie Stick, Camera Stand
  • FEATURE: the tripod phone mount is adjustable by screw mechanism, 360 degree rotating, vertical(portrait mode) and horizontal(landscape mode) or any angle as you need, not necessary to take your cell phone out of a standard tripod or small tripod.
  • EASY TO USE: two options for using tripod phone holder: 1. screw it directly to the tripod or selfie stick with pivoting arm, being able to 360 degrees rotating, 2. remove the phone clamp from pivoting arm and then mount on a tripod or monopod.
  • ADJUSTABLE WIDTH: 2.2inch-4.1inch(55mm-105mm), attachable to any regular-size smartphone, tripod, selfie stick, monopod or camera; two standard 1/4 x 20mm female thread interfaces meeting your various needs. Very functional and compact.
  • MATERIAL: the black part made of sturdy plastic, the female threads inserted are brass, the male screw is steel and soft non-slipping silica gel pads, which protect your cellphone from scratch and hold the phone securely.
  • ATTACHABLE TO: most mobile phones, tripods, unipods, selfie sticks, cameras, camcorders, pico projectors, including iPhone 11/11 Pro/11 Pro Max/X/XS/XR/XS Max/8/7/6/6s Plus/SE/5s/5/5c, Samsung Galaxy S10/10+/S9/S9+/S8/S8+/S7/S6/S6 edge, Note10/10+/9/8 and Android phones.
  • Overall width and thickness
  • Whether the case is flexible, textured, curved, or smooth
  • Camera-bump and flash clearance
  • Side-button positions
  • Phone weight and the tripod’s stated maximum load capacity
  • Whether the phone’s center of gravity will make the tripod tip

A spring clamp is convenient, but a screw-tightening clamp gives more controllable pressure and is generally the safer choice for a heavier phone. That is manufacturer guidance rather than an independently verified comparative test. Professional photography and video hardware may also use 3/8"-16 hardware, so 1/4"-20 is common—not literally universal.

1. Padded binder-clip mount: the fastest temporary option

This is the least complicated design and requires only a small binder clip, pliers, thin rubber padding, and a 1/4"-20 wing nut. It is best for a stationary phone, a quick reference camera, or a temporary jobsite setup where a failure would not damage the phone or interrupt important footage.

Materials

  • Small binder clip
  • 1/4"-20 wing nut
  • Pliers
  • Thin rubber padding
  • A tripod with a matching 1/4"-20 screw
  • Optional tape to stop the bent handle from wobbling

Build steps

  1. Use pliers to bend the top of one binder-clip handle through approximately 90 degrees.
  2. Fit the bent handle over the tripod screw and secure it with the 1/4"-20 wing nut.
  3. Line the inside of the clip with thin rubber padding. Do not allow bare metal to contact the phone.
  4. Insert the phone and check that the clip does not press the power or volume buttons.
  5. If the bent handle flexes or rotates, tape it to the tripod to reduce movement.

The published design specifically identifies handle wobble and bare-metal contact as problems. Padding protects the phone, but it does not turn the clip into a rated clamp. Do not use it above people, over hard concrete, or for a phone that must remain secure during movement.

2. Nail-plate or rafter-tie mount: stronger metal construction

A nail plate or rafter tie offers a broader metal support than a binder clip. It requires drilling and a hard-shell case, so it is better suited to a dedicated project phone case than to a flexible everyday case.

Syncwire Tripod Phone Mount, Universal Smartphone Mount Adapter | 2 Cold Shoe Mounts, 1/4"-20 Thread, 360° Rotation & 180° Tilt, Adjustable Cell Phone Clamp Holder, for Mobile Photography
  • Dual Cold Shoe Mounts: This phone tripod mount features 2 rotatable cold shoe mounts for attaching microphones, LED lights, and other accessories. Easily adjust accessory angles for photography, video recording, and vlogging.
  • Universal 1/4"-20 Thread: The smartphone tripod adapter features a standard 1/4"-20 threaded mount for compatibility with tripods, selfie sticks, monopods, cameras, stabilizers, and other compatible photography accessories.
  • 360° Rotation & 180° Tilt: Adjust your phone angle with 360° rotation and 180° tilt to switch easily between portrait and landscape orientations. The adjustable phone mount allows flexible positioning without an additional ball head.
  • Wide Phone Compatibility: This universal cell phone tripod mount fits smartphones measuring 2.16"–3.7" wide (5.5–9.4 cm), including iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. For the best fit, avoid clamping directly over side buttons. With thick cases or protruding buttons, adjust the clamp position slightly higher or lower.
  • Secure, Non-Slip Grip: Thick, non-slip silicone pads help hold your smartphone securely and protect it from scratches. The adjustable phone clamp accommodates compatible devices with many types of phone cases for stable mounting during photos and videos.

Materials

  • Nail plate or rafter tie
  • Pliers
  • 1/4"-20 wing nut
  • Drill and 1/4-inch metal drill bit
  • Hard-shell phone case
  • Plastic hook-and-loop picture-hanging strips

Build steps

  1. Bend the plate to approximately 90 degrees.
  2. Drill a 1/4-inch hole roughly 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the bend.
  3. Attach one picture-hanging strip to the plate and its mating strip to the outside of the hard-shell case.
  4. Attach the plate to the tripod using the wing nut.
  5. Press the case firmly onto the plate and wait for the adhesive connection to seat according to the strip manufacturer’s instructions.
  6. Install the phone and inspect the camera, flash, buttons, and balance before use.

The adhesive is the critical part of this design. The source specifies a hard-shell case but does not establish reliable bonding on silicone, leather, textured, dirty, wet, flexible, or curved cases. Clean and dry surfaces are essential, and a case that relies on adhesive should be treated as a replaceable part.

3. L-bracket mount: simple and compact

A 3 × 3/4-inch metal corner brace can be used without bending, drilling, or a wing nut. Attach it to a hard-shell phone case with plastic picture-hanging strips. This is one of the simplest designs when the bracket’s shape provides the required tripod connection.

Build steps

  1. Choose a 3 × 3/4-inch metal corner brace.
  2. Attach one side of the brace to the outside of a hard-shell phone case using plastic picture-hanging strips.
  3. Position the brace so it cannot cover the camera lens or flash.
  4. Fit the brace to the tripod and check that the phone sits squarely.
  5. Test the adhesive and balance at low height before filming or working overhead.

Smaller brackets may require a drilled hole and a 1/4"-20 wing nut. Do not assume that a bracket that fits the tripod will safely support the phone. The phone’s weight, camera bump, and case can move the center of gravity far enough to tip a small tripod.

4. Reversed belt-clip case with an L-bracket

If you already have a belt-clip hard-shell phone case, you may be able to reverse it so the camera lens clears the clip. A plastic hanging strip placed inside the clip can connect it to an L-bracket. The case can then rotate between vertical and horizontal orientations.

  1. Reverse the belt-clip case so the camera lens has an unobstructed view.
  2. Check that the clip does not cover the lens or cast a shadow across it.
  3. Place a plastic hanging strip inside the clip and the mating strip on the L-bracket.
  4. Press the parts together and verify that the case is fully seated.
  5. Rotate the case to portrait or landscape orientation only after checking that the phone remains balanced.

This design depends on both the case and the adhesive connection. It should not be used with a loose, cracked, or heavily worn belt clip.

5. Wooden smartphone tripod mount: the most deliberate build

A wooden mount is more work but can provide a rigid, repeatable structure. The published design uses a 1/4"-20 T-nut and five pieces of scrap wood approximately the length of the phone.

Materials

  • 1/4"-20 T-nut
  • Five pieces of scrap wood approximately the length of the phone
  • Drill
  • 5/16-inch drill bit
  • 1/8-inch drill bit
  • Four screws
  • Screwdriver or driver bit

Build considerations

  1. Lay out the five wood pieces so they support the phone without covering its controls, cameras, or flash.
  2. Mark the T-nut location and drill the required opening with the 5/16-inch bit.
  3. Drill the specified 1/8-inch pilot holes before installing screws. Pilot holes reduce the chance of splitting the wood.
  4. Install the four screws and fit the T-nut securely.
  5. Leave enough clearance to unlock or remove the phone after the screen sleeps.
  6. Check the camera and flash view through the assembled mount.

The wooden design’s main risks are construction errors: split wood, loose screws, blocked cameras, and a phone that cannot be removed easily. Sand sharp edges and add a soft contact surface where wood touches the case.

6. Paper-clip mount: only for very light-duty use

One published design bends a paper clip into a U-shaped holder and uses a small rubber band to retain the phone. The materials are a paper clip, pliers, and a small rubber band.

  2. Bend the wire into a U-shape.
  3. Attach the rubber band to the remaining loop.
  4. Place the phone between the arms and check that it cannot slide out.

The design is reported as having been tried on desks, tables, chairs, indoors, and outdoors, but the page does not publish phone models, sample sizes, drop results, vibration measurements, load limits, or pass/fail criteria. Its stability and reliability should therefore be treated as informal observations, not a verified safety rating. Use it only where a fall would not matter.

Compatibility checklist before you attach a phone

Measure the real assembly

Measure the phone with its normal case installed. Wallet cases and battery cases can exceed a clamp’s width range or stop the jaws from gripping deeply enough. Large camera bumps can push a shallow clamp away from the phone and prevent it from sitting squarely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the buttons

Place the phone in the mount and operate the screen. Watch for unexpected shutdowns, volume changes, screenshots, or interrupted recording. A clamp arm over a side button can cause problems. Sliding the phone may solve it only if the phone remains centered and balanced; otherwise use a clamp with side cutouts.

Check lens and flash clearance

Look at the live camera view, not just the outside of the phone. A bracket, wood edge, clip, rubber pad, or adhesive strip can obstruct the lens or flash. Shadows may appear only when the flash is active.

  • Package Included: phone holder x 1. Please note that the load capacity is 500g

Check the tripod’s load and stability

Find the tripod’s stated “Max Load Capacity” or “weight limit.” Physical fit does not prove that the tripod can safely support the phone and mount. A heavy phone can make a small tripod top-heavy, particularly when the phone is mounted horizontally or the camera bump shifts its center of gravity.

Account for unusual phone shapes

Foldables are difficult edge cases. A normal clamp may not work well with a Z Fold-style phone when it is open, while a closed Z Flip-style phone may be too thick. Magnetic mounts are not universal alternatives: they require a compatible magnetic phone or case/ring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sensible test sequence

  1. Inspect: Look for sharp edges, loose screws, bent metal, cracked plastic, damaged adhesive, and exposed metal near the phone.
  2. Fit: Install the phone with its case and confirm that the clamp or support grips a substantial, padded area.
  3. Check functions: Verify camera, flash, screen access, power button, volume buttons, and charging access if needed.
  4. Test low: Set the tripod on a stable surface at the lowest practical height.
  5. Apply gentle movement: Make sure the phone does not slide, rotate, or cause the tripod to tip. Do not shake an unproven mount over a person or valuable equipment.
  6. Recheck during use: Adhesive-backed designs and bent-wire designs can loosen. Stop immediately if the phone shifts.

Which DIY mount should you choose?

Use case Best starting point Main limitation
Fast, temporary setup Padded binder clip Handle wobble and limited retention
Dedicated hard-shell case Nail plate or L-bracket Adhesive compatibility and camera clearance
Portrait/landscape rotation Belt-clip case with L-bracket Depends on clip and adhesive strength
Rigid custom construction Wooden mount More tools, drilling, and alignment work
Experiment only Paper clip No published load or durability data

Bottom line

A DIY smartphone tripod mount can be cheap and practical, especially for a stationary phone, but the tripod’s standard 1/4"-20 thread solves only one part of the problem. The safest choice among these designs depends on the phone’s actual cased dimensions, the tripod’s load limit, the mount’s grip or adhesive connection, and unobstructed camera clearance. Use padding on metal clips, pilot-drill wood, avoid questionable adhesive surfaces, keep the setup low while testing, and do not treat informal “made and tested” claims as evidence of a universal safety rating.
