You can reduce dust mites and the allergens they leave behind, but you cannot make a home completely dust-mite-free. Focus first on the bedroom, where bedding and mattresses are major reservoirs, and combine regular washing, protective encasements, moisture control and careful cleaning. These steps can help people with dust-mite allergies; they cannot establish that dust mites are the cause of every breathing problem.
What dust mites are—and what “getting rid of them” can mean
Dust mites are microscopic organisms commonly found in house dust, mattresses, bedding, upholstered furniture, carpets and curtains. They feed on shed skin flakes. Their body parts and droppings can trigger allergy symptoms or asthma symptoms in people who are sensitive to them. The CDC notes that “Dust mites can trigger an asthma attack” (CDC asthma triggers).

Complete elimination is not a realistic household goal. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) puts it plainly: “No matter how clean a home is, dust mites cannot be completely eliminated” (NIEHS dust-mite guidance). Regular measures can reduce mite numbers and the allergens already present, but those are related—not identical—goals: washing and cleaning remove allergen-containing dust, while humidity control and other changes help make the home less favorable to mites.

Start with the bed
Encase the mattress and pillows
Use allergen-proof or dust-proof covers designed for mattresses and pillows. They help contain major bedding reservoirs, but they are one part of a broader routine, not a stand-alone fix. A CDC-hosted practice parameter says covers alone are unlikely to provide clinical benefit in many cases; follow the cover manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and continue washing bedding (practice parameter on environmental assessment and exposure control).

Wash bedding weekly and dry it completely
Wash sheets, pillowcases, blankets and other washable bedding every week, then dry everything completely. When feasible, NIEHS recommends hot water at 130–140°F to kill mites (NIEHS dust-mite guidance). If high-temperature water is unavailable, a federal asthma guideline says cooler water with detergent and bleach can still considerably reduce live mites and mite allergens; use bleach only if the items’ care labels allow it (federal asthma guideline).
Control excess indoor humidity
Aim for indoor relative humidity around 30–50%, the range CDC and EPA recommend for dust-mite control (CDC asthma triggers; EPA guidance on asthma triggers). A humidity gauge can show whether your home is within that range, but it does not change humidity by itself. In a humid home, an air conditioner or dehumidifier may help lower moisture. Avoid adding moisture with a humidifier when your goal is to control excess humidity.

Clean settled dust without stirring it up
- Damp-dust and mop. Use a damp rag or mop rather than dry-dusting, which can put settled dust back into the air.
- Vacuum regularly. Clean carpets, area rugs and fabric-covered furniture with a HEPA-filter vacuum where possible. Vacuuming can stir dust into the air, so people with asthma or allergies should leave the room or area while it is being done when feasible (CDC asthma triggers; EPA guidance on asthma triggers).
Consider reducing bedroom dust reservoirs
If it suits your household, optional changes can make some surfaces easier to clean or reduce places where dust collects. NIEHS suggests replacing wool or feather bedding with synthetic materials, choosing washable stuffed toys, and, where practical, replacing wall-to-wall bedroom carpet with bare flooring or removing fabric curtains and upholstered furniture (NIEHS dust-mite guidance). These changes involve different levels of cost and effort; they are not requirements for every home. Prioritize the repeatable steps—bedding care, moisture control and cleaning—before taking on larger changes.
Choose a routine you can maintain
| Measure | Where it helps | What it addresses | Ongoing effort or trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mattress and pillow encasements | Mattress and pillows | Covers major bedding reservoirs; use with washing and cleaning. | Follow the cover’s care instructions; covers alone may not provide clinical benefit. |
| Weekly bedding wash and complete drying | Sheets, pillowcases, blankets and washable bedding | Removes mites and allergen-containing material; hot water is recommended when feasible. | Requires a weekly laundry routine. Cooler water with detergent and bleach may be an alternative when high heat is unavailable and fabric care labels permit bleach. |
| Humidity management | Indoor air | Controls moisture conditions that favor mites; target 30–50% relative humidity. | A humidity gauge measures conditions but does not control them; air conditioning or a dehumidifier may help in a humid home. |
| Damp dusting and HEPA vacuuming | Hard surfaces, carpets, rugs and fabric-covered furniture | Removes settled dust and allergen buildup. | Requires regular cleaning. Vacuuming may temporarily stir particles into the air. |
| Fewer dust-collecting furnishings | Bedroom floors, curtains, furniture and toys | Reduces some dust reservoirs or makes them easier to clean. | May involve more cost or effort; changes are optional and depend on the household. |
The practice parameter describes a combined approach—including humidity maintenance, bedding washing, high-efficiency vacuuming and encasements—as the most effective strategy in its review. That is not a guarantee of symptom improvement for every person (practice parameter on environmental assessment and exposure control).

When to seek medical advice
Home measures reduce exposure; they do not diagnose an allergy or replace asthma care. If you suspect dust-mite allergy, or symptoms persist, worsen or seem connected to time at home, discuss evaluation with a healthcare professional. NIEHS recommends seeing a doctor and getting tested when an allergy is suspected (NIEHS dust-mite guidance). Depending on the diagnosis and individual case, clinician-guided care may include medicines or immunotherapy. Do not start, stop or change medication based only on a household-cleaning plan.
