To keep an evergreen attractive, first identify what it is: pines, spruce and fir, junipers and arborvitae, yews, and broadleaf evergreens respond differently to pruning. For most, remove dead or damaged wood and make light, selective cuts that preserve the plant’s natural shape. Cutting into bare wood can leave lasting gaps on some species.
When is the best time to prune evergreens?
For general shaping, late winter or early spring, before new growth begins, is a useful baseline. Remove dead, diseased, or broken branches when you notice them; the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension says this wood can be removed any time of year (University of Delaware Cooperative Extension).
Timing depends on species, climate, and whether the plant blooms. Flowering broadleaf evergreens should generally be pruned after flowering if you want to preserve the next season’s flower buds. Avoid late-season pruning that could prompt tender growth before cold weather. Exact calendar cutoffs are regional: University of New Hampshire Extension, for example, advises pruning needle evergreens after the ground thaws and no later than June 15 in its local guidance (University of New Hampshire Extension). Follow local extension guidance where your climate differs.
How do you prune evergreen shrubs without losing their natural shape?
Use selective thinning cuts: remove an individual branch back to a side shoot or suitable bud rather than clipping every surface into a uniform outline. This keeps the plant’s branching pattern visible and avoids cutting foliage indiscriminately. Before making a cut, check what will remain: some evergreens will not replace growth from a bare stem.

- Identify the plant and inspect its natural form before cutting.
- Remove dead, diseased, or broken branches first.
- For shaping, shorten selected branches back to a healthy side branch or visible bud, keeping green foliage on the remaining part when it needs to grow.
- Step back periodically and stop when the plant’s outline is balanced; avoid removing more than the intended shape requires.
A basic toolkit includes hand pruners for small branches, loppers for thicker branches, and a pruning saw for branches too large for loppers. Hedge shears are for clipping formal hedges, not a substitute for selective cuts on every evergreen. Choose tools sized to the branch and keep them in good working order (University of Delaware Cooperative Extension; University of New Hampshire Extension).
How the main evergreen groups respond to pruning
| Plant group | Useful approach | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Pine | Usually leave it alone. To encourage more compact growth, pinch part of the new spring candles before the needles expand. | Do not shear or cut into bare old wood; it generally will not fill in. |
| Spruce, fir, and Douglas-fir | For modest shaping on young plants, shorten new growth to a visible side bud or branch in late winter or early spring. | Preserve needles on a branch expected to grow. Some dwarf forms tolerate pruning poorly. |
| Juniper and arborvitae | Make selective cuts to a green, needled side shoot, following the plant’s direction of growth. | Do not cut into bare interior wood; foliage-free gaps may persist. |
| Yew | Can tolerate heavier pruning than many evergreens; shape before spring growth and, if needed, make a second light trim in early summer. | Work gradually on overgrown plants and avoid cutting blindly into interior areas with no visible buds. |
| Flowering broadleaf evergreens, such as rhododendron, azalea, pieris, and mountain laurel | Prune after flowering when maintaining the plant or removing spent flower clusters and wayward growth. | Pruning earlier may remove wood that would otherwise flower; timing varies by species and local bloom schedule. |
Pines: shorten candles, not branches into bare wood
Pines usually need little pruning. If you want a bushier, more compact plant, pinch a portion of the elongated spring candles before their needles open. Colorado State University Extension recommends removing roughly one-third of the candles; The Morton Arboretum describes pinching one-third to one-half as candles expand (Colorado State University Extension; The Morton Arboretum). This is a seasonal growth adjustment, not a way to cut an established pine back to a smaller framework. Pine branches generally lack buds along older stems that would refill a bare cut, and cut needles remain cut.

Spruce, fir, and Douglas-fir: keep cuts modest
These trees generally need little pruning when planted where they have room to reach their natural size. If a young tree needs shaping or denser branching, shorten branch tips to a visible side bud or branch in late winter or early spring. On an overgrown branch, retain needles on the portion expected to continue growing. If the branch must be removed beyond its green foliage, remove it at the trunk rather than leaving a bare stub. Some dwarf forms are particularly intolerant of pruning.
Juniper and arborvitae: stay within the green
Junipers and arborvitae can have shaded, foliage-free interiors, especially where the outer growth has become dense. Make selective cuts to green growth; Colorado State University Extension warns that a shrub cut back to bare wood can have a permanent bare spot (Colorado State University Extension). Its guidance for these plants is to cut individual branches back to an upward-growing side branch. Shaded plants grow more slowly and tolerate pruning less well. Avoid a narrow-bottomed cone: a broad top can shade the lower branches and thin their foliage.

Yew: more forgiving, not invulnerable
Yews can produce new growth on older wood and generally tolerate heavier pruning better than many common evergreens. For a maintained plant, shape before spring growth; a second light trim may be possible in early summer. The Morton Arboretum advises avoiding pruning after July to reduce late-season growth and winter injury (The Morton Arboretum). For an overgrown yew, reduce it gradually, cutting back to branches and avoiding interior zones with no visible buds rather than assuming every bare patch will recover.
Flowering broadleaf evergreens: prune around bloom
Rhododendron, azalea, pieris, and mountain laurel often need little pruning. If you prune to maintain flowering, wait until after bloom, then remove spent flower clusters and dead, diseased, weak, or wayward branches. Their bloom schedules vary, so use the plant’s flowering cycle and local conditions rather than a single calendar date.

Does shearing help evergreens look better?
Shearing can suit formal hedges and plants maintained in a clipped shape, including yew and boxwood. But repeated shearing forms a dense outer shell that can shade the interior. Over time, that may mean thinner inner foliage, dead zones, loss of natural form, and more difficult maintenance. For informal landscape shrubs, selective cuts usually preserve a more natural outline. Do not assume that a technique suited to a formal hedge is safe for every evergreen.
When to get help before making a major cut
Identify the species and cultivar before structural pruning, especially if the plant is mature or you are unsure whether it will regrow from older wood. Consult a local extension service or an arborist for mature trees, overhead branches, or uncertain identification. General home-landscape advice cannot assess a particular plant’s condition, access, or hazards on site.
