Tuya Developer’s “Prototype a Smart Mirror” guide outlines an embedded mirror that combines a small information display, touch controls, three white-light modes, PIR motion sensing, Tuya app control, battery power and wireless charging. It is a hardware-and-firmware project—not a Raspberry Pi or MagicMirror software tutorial. The guide was last updated October 28, 2021, so treat its chip and SDK steps as a historical example and check current Tuya support before building.
What the prototype does
The concept brings several functions into one mirror: a screen for time, calendar details and battery information; touch keys; controllable white lighting; and a PIR sensor that can trigger the lights. The device is intended to communicate with Tuya’s IoT platform for phone control. The guide describes three white-light modes, but does not provide independent testing or performance measurements.

In the sample application, motion turns on the light when the relevant switches are enabled, and the off timer is set to 600 seconds. That is a setting in the tutorial’s code, not a verified runtime or battery-life result.

Display example
The guide names a Spotpear MF219, a 2.19-inch UART LCD with 240 × 376 resolution. It presents this as an example, not a required part: “Prepare a screen as you like.” Before choosing another display, check that its interface and controller work with your board, that its dimensions fit the enclosure, and that it remains legible behind the selected mirror surface. Also confirm its power requirements.
Physical and power design
Plan the mirror, screen, lighting, sensors, battery and charging hardware together rather than treating them as isolated parts. The guide includes battery charging and discharging, gauging and USB charging alongside wireless charging components, but does not give a tested battery capacity or runtime. It also does not name suppliers or establish current availability for the listed parts.

How the Tuya product setup is organized
The documented platform workflow creates a custom product using the Wi-Fi-Bluetooth protocol, defines the device functions, selects a control panel and chooses a chip platform. The guide’s standard functions cover switch, mode, brightness, and battery/PIR state, with a custom PIR control. It also emphasizes that the firmware identifier configured on the platform must match the uploaded firmware name for the documented flashing sequence to work.

What the embedded firmware covers
The guide’s implementation targets a BK7231N chip, Linux development environment and Tuya Wi-Fi/Bluetooth LE SDK. Its template application separates display, touch-key, PWM, device and mirror-control components. The display code includes time, weekday, year, day and battery information; screen icons are compressed into a .bin file and written to the screen chip.

The documented sequence is to configure the product, adapt the application code, compile with the SDK build script and download the firmware to the board. These are the steps described by the 2021 guide, not confirmation that the same SDK, APIs, repository or module path remain supported today. Verify the current official Tuya documentation and supported module options before committing to this development path.
What to verify before building
- Module and SDK support: Confirm that the specific module and chip path you plan to use is supported by current Tuya development resources; the example names BK7231N but no exact module SKU.
- Display integration: Confirm the interface, controller, dimensions, resolution, power needs and visibility through your mirror surface.
- Device functions: Map the app controls and reported states you need—such as switch, brightness, mode, battery and PIR—to the product configuration and firmware.
- Firmware identity: Keep the platform firmware identifier and uploaded firmware name consistent for the documented flashing workflow.
- Enclosure and power: Check that the screen, lighting, sensors, battery and charging parts can be physically integrated in the intended mirror body. The guide offers no measured runtime or validated enclosure design.
What this guide does—and does not—establish
Tuya Developer’s guide is a concrete starting point for a small embedded smart-mirror prototype, including its feature concept, parts categories, product configuration and firmware structure. It does not compare alternative displays or controllers, report comparative performance, verify present-day component stock, or establish current support for its BK7231N/SDK workflow. Use it as a design reference, then validate component fit and current development support for your particular build.
