A sand pendulum draws by letting grains fall from a moving, suspended container onto a tray or shallow bed. Set up a steady overhead support, a catch surface under the swing, and a small outlet you can open and close; start the swing as the sand begins to flow. You can make a simple one-plane trace or, with a compound pendulum, explore more complex Lissajous figures.
What you need
- A stable overhead support with enough clearance for the pendulum to swing.
- A light container or funnel that can hold a small amount of sand.
- A small, controllable outlet, such as a hole that can be plugged.
- Sand and a tray or shallow bed beneath the entire swing path.
These are practical home-build choices based on the equipment and operating principles in university teaching demonstrations, not prescribed dimensions. The University of Iowa demonstration lists a sand pendulum, sand and a platform; its apparatus also uses a black cloth and Plexiglas platform. The University of Minnesota demonstration uses a funnel, fine sand, and an outlet plugged with a ball and string. Neither institution establishes a universal outlet diameter, preferred grain size, tray shape, or home-build measurements.

Assemble and operate a one-plane sand pendulum
- Secure the support. Hang the container so it can swing freely above the tray. Keep the support steady and do not load a fragile fixture; the cited demonstrations do not provide a home-safety standard.
- Prepare the sand outlet. Put in a small amount of sand and close the outlet with a plug or other controllable stopper. Clear the outlet before use.
- Check the catch area and flow. Position the tray beneath the full swing path. With the pendulum stationary, briefly check that sand can flow, then close the outlet again. These setup checks are practical suggestions, not a tested institutional procedure.
- Displace and release. Pull the bob or container to one side without adding a sideways push. As it is released, open the outlet so the moving pendulum leaves a trail. Minnesota’s published instruction is: “To make the figure, displace the bob, pull out the ball, and release.”
- Adjust between attempts. If the sand runs out before the pendulum moves or keeps flowing after it stops, adjust the stopper or outlet and try again. The sources do not specify a best flow rate.
The University of Iowa notes that the bob height must be adjusted for tracing. Set the height so the outlet is close enough for the sand to land on the prepared surface, while still allowing the pendulum to swing freely.

How the sand makes a pattern
The outlet moves with the pendulum, and falling grains mark its path. The Nagoya City Science Museum describes an oscillating, perforated sand container that draws figures, connecting the exhibit to simple harmonic oscillation. In a one-plane swing, the trace follows the pendulum’s motion across the tray.

Making a two-direction figure
A compound pendulum supported so it can swing in two directions can trace more involved figures. The University of Iowa identifies these as Lissajous figures. The pattern depends on how the two motions combine, as well as the apparatus and the way it is released; it is not guaranteed to repeat exactly from one attempt to the next.
For its particular sand-writing double-pendulum apparatus, the University of Freiburg procedure says to add about two thimblefuls of sand, deflect the pendulum in both possible swing directions, and pull the stopper as the pendulum is released. That fill amount and procedure are specific to that apparatus, not a universal measurement for a home funnel.

For a home or classroom build, compare the options by support stability and available height, how easily the outlet opens and closes, whether the pendulum swings in one plane or two, how readily sand can be caught and reset, and whether the aim is an artistic trace or a physics demonstration. These are practical selection considerations, not a published product comparison. An educational activity booklet includes an assembly diagram for a sand pendulum tower, but the available source does not establish a currently marketed kit or its availability.

A tabletop sand pendulum is generally used to trace an oscillation or a compound-motion figure. A Foucault pendulum is a different, long-period demonstration: its swing direction appears to change relative to the floor because Earth rotates. MIT’s account of the 1851 Panthéon demonstration describes a suspended ball drawing successive lines in sand while observers watched the effect. Freiburg also describes a rotating-table version, in which the path appears as a rosette in the rotating frame. These are demonstrations of Earth’s rotation, not instructions for making an ordinary tabletop pattern pendulum.
