A heavier row cover can offer more protection during a brief freeze, but it blocks more light and can trap damaging heat. For root crops, mulch helps keep the soil around them from freezing. No cover guarantees survival at a particular temperature: crop, conditions, and cover setup all matter.
Choose protection for the crop and forecast
Check your local forecast and choose a cover suited to the expected overnight low. Row covers are fabric barriers that can be laid directly over low-growing plants or supported on hoops. Lightweight material is mainly useful as an insect barrier; heavier spunbond fabric is generally more suitable for cold protection, though it reduces the light reaching plants.

| Cover weight | Source-stated frost protection | Trade-off or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Medium-weight row cover | 28°F, according to Utah State University Extension’s 2020 guide | Estimate from that guide; it is not a guarantee for every crop or setup. |
| Heavyweight row cover | 24°F–28°F, according to Utah State University Extension’s 2020 guide | Estimate from that guide; it is not a guarantee for every crop or setup. |
| Heaviest row-cover fabric | Around 20°F, according to University of Minnesota Extension’s 2024 guidance | UMN says these fabrics block 40%–50% of sunlight, so they are best for brief cold periods rather than remaining closed through warm, bright days. |
The extension figures use different categories and conditions, so they should not be combined into one universal rating. A row-cover rating is a planning estimate, not a promise that a particular plant will survive a given low.
Install and manage row covers
- Drape the fabric with slack. Leave room for plants to grow rather than pulling the cover tight over foliage.
- Anchor every edge. Use soil, rocks, or other weights to stop wind from lifting the cover. Utah State University Extension cautions that landscape staples may tear fabric.
- Add hoops where support helps. A low tunnel keeps fabric from flapping against tender plants and gives crops room beneath the cover.
- Manage daytime heat. On warm, sunny days, open low-tunnel ends; close them overnight. Remove or vent a heavy cover when conditions warm to reduce heat stress.
For crops that need pollinator access, remove the cover when flowering and pollination are needed. This matters most when a cover stays on for an extended period—for example, over cucumbers, squash, melons, or pumpkins—not just for a single frost night.

Lettuce, endive, and radicchio
University of Minnesota Extension recommends row covers or low tunnels for these cool-season leafy crops when freezing temperatures threaten. Their tolerance still depends on the crop and growing conditions.
Tomatoes
For an early frost, Utah State University Extension recommends covering tomato plants with a blanket or tarp. Secure the covering so wind cannot blow it away, and remove or open it when daytime conditions warm.
