Best Low Tunnels and Row Covers for Protecting a Winter Vegetable Garden

Medium-weight spun fabric is a practical starting point for many winter gardens, but crop choice, local climate, secure anchoring, ventilation, and watering determine whether a low tunnel works well.

For many winter vegetable gardens, medium-weight spunbond row-cover fabric is a sensible starting point: it balances frost protection with the light crops need. Choose a cover only after considering the crop, local winter conditions, planting timing, and whether you can ventilate and check the tunnel. A cover can reduce frost exposure, but it cannot make tender vegetables winter-hardy or guarantee a harvest through severe freezes.

Choose a cover by weighing frost protection against light

Low tunnels are short, hoop-supported frames that cover a row or bed. Their covers generally fall into two approaches: breathable spun fabric and more enclosed greenhouse polyethylene. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service gives these specifications for spun fabrics:

Cover grade NRCS specifications When it may fit
Light spun fabric 0.45 oz/yd²; 90–95% light transmittance; 2°F frost protection Light frost protection when preserving light transmission is the priority; not a hard-freeze solution.
Medium spun fabric 0.5–1.0 oz/yd²; 70–85% light transmittance; 4–6°F frost protection A reasonable starting grade for many gardeners balancing light and insulation.
Heavy spun fabric 1.5–2.2 oz/yd²; 30–50% light transmittance; 8°F frost protection Situations where added frost protection outweighs reduced light; monitor how crops respond.
Greenhouse polyethylene Iowa State’s construction guidance specifies UV-resistant 6-mil greenhouse poly; no comparable light-transmittance or frost-protection figure is stated in the cited guidance. A more enclosed tunnel for gardeners prepared to anchor it securely and manage heat and condensation.
Floating row cover University of Maine Cooperative Extension reports 2–4°F frost protection and rain permeability. A quick cover laid over short crops; leave slack for growth and support delicate foliage if contact could damage it.

The spun-fabric figures are NRCS guidance, not guarantees. Actual protection depends on installation, wind, duration and severity of cold, soil heat, crop hardiness, and local weather. Spun fabric allows airflow; plastic can trap heat and condensation, and crops touching plastic may decay. NRCS low tunnel specifications; University of Maine Cooperative Extension guidance.

Why medium-weight fabric is often the practical starting point

Medium fabric offers more protection than light fabric without the heavy grade’s substantial reduction in light. That is a useful balance, not a universal winner: use lighter material when the crop needs more light and only light frost protection is needed; consider heavier fabric when the extra protection is worth less light.

When to use greenhouse plastic

Polyethylene makes a more enclosed tunnel, but it needs careful anchoring and active temperature and moisture management. Condensation can collect inside, so avoid letting crops rest against the plastic. Choose this setup only if you can monitor and ventilate it.

Choose crops and planting dates before building

Begin with frost-hardy crops and plant early enough for them to establish before short winter days slow growth. Iowa State University lists lettuce, kale, parsley, onions, leeks, cilantro, carrots, beets, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, radish, chicories, and spinach as candidates for tunnels during the early or late growing season. It identifies spinach and cilantro as especially hardy.

Timing is regional. Iowa State’s central Iowa guidance says crops should be full-sized by early November for successful winter production there, with example planting windows from mid-August to late September depending on crop. The same guidance says most other cold-hardy crops are best harvested by the end of December in central Iowa, while spinach or cilantro may be carried through winter under poly protection. These dates and outcomes are not guarantees for other regions, cultivars, or winters. See Iowa State’s low-tunnel guidance for its regional recommendations.

Build a frame sized for the crop and cover

There is no single required tunnel design. Size the frame for the crop’s mature height and the cover’s width, then make the structure sturdy enough to resist wind.

Example design Details Source
Poly low tunnel Several feet wide and 2 or 3 feet tall at the center; hoops made from 10-foot EMT conduit; UV-resistant 6-mil greenhouse poly. Iowa State University
Low tunnel dimensions and hoop options 15–30 inches high with hoops spaced 2–4 feet apart; examples include PVC arches or #9 wire hoops bent into arches and inserted into soil. University of Maryland Extension

These are example configurations, not a required specification. Iowa State cautions that PVC can react with plastic covers and cause faster aging and tearing in its particular poly setup; that warning should not be treated as a rule for every cover or construction.

Secure the cover against wind

For the Iowa State poly design, leave extra plastic at the ends so it can be gathered and secured. Ropes or bungees across the hoops help limit billowing, and the edges should be weighted. NRCS lists sandbags, bricks, logs, rocks, or boards as possible anchors; avoid anything likely to puncture the cover. Inspect fasteners after storms, since wind can lift or tear covers. Ventilate, close, and water the tunnel

Covered beds need regular attention. A closed tunnel can heat up on a sunny day, and rainfall will not reach crops beneath the cover.

  1. Check conditions during the day. Iowa State advises opening tunnel ends or rolling up sides when it is sunny and above 40°F.
  2. Close before cold nights. Its guidance says to close the tunnel at night unless the overnight temperature will remain above 40°F, and to close before temperatures fall into the mid to low 30s°F. Check the local forecast; these thresholds are regional guidance, not universal rules for every crop or structure.
  3. Check soil moisture. Irrigate when the covered soil is dry because rain cannot reach it.
  4. Keep the tunnel in full sun where possible. The cover reduces available light, particularly heavier fabric, so site selection matters.

Plan for fabric wear and replacement

Cover life depends on grade, use, and weather. University of Maryland Extension reports typical row-cover life of 1 to 3 years. Utah State University Extension notes that lightweight material tends to rip easily and may last only a few months, so inspect covers for tears and worn edges before relying on them for frost protection. Maryland Extension; Utah State University Extension.

Match the setup to the way you garden

  • For a simple, breathable cover: use spun fabric and select its weight for the protection-versus-light tradeoff.
  • For a more enclosed tunnel: use greenhouse polyethylene only if you can anchor it well, vent it, and monitor condensation.
  • For a quick cover over short crops: floating row cover can be laid directly over plants; leave room for growth and protect delicate foliage from damaging contact.
