Use cling film for covering only when its label permits the intended use; keep it clear of food and vent it during microwave heating. Do not fully wrap food in foil for microwave use, and check the appliance manual before using any foil in one.
Choose the material for the job
Cling film (plastic wrap) makes a flexible cover and can help with short-term food storage. Foil provides a barrier and can be used to wrap or cover food in suitable settings. Neither material is automatically suitable for every heat source: refrigerator or freezer storage, a conventional oven, and a microwave are different uses. Check the product label for the intended use and follow the appliance instructions.
How to use cling film in a microwave
- Check the wrap’s packaging. Use it for microwave cooking or reheating only if it is marked for microwave use.
- Put the food in a microwave-safe dish. Leave enough space between the food and the top of the dish so the wrap does not touch the food.
- Loosen or vent the wrap so steam can escape, then follow the wrap label and microwave manual.
Packaging made for storage is not necessarily suitable for heating. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance says to use microwave food packaging only when its package directs that use, and then only once. Do not heat food in foam trays, fresh-meat packaging, or cold-storage tubs such as margarine or yogurt containers unless they are specifically labeled for that use. Remove food from its packaging before microwave defrosting. See the USDA’s guidance on cooking with microwave ovens and meat and poultry packaging.
How to use aluminum foil
In a microwave
Do not fully wrap food in foil or cover it completely. Metal reflects microwaves, which can cause uneven cooking and may damage the oven; the FDA therefore says metal pans or foil generally should not be used in a microwave. USDA guidance allows that small, smooth pieces may sometimes shield parts of food, but only where the microwave owner’s manual permits it. Stop the microwave if sparking occurs. Consult the FDA’s microwave oven guidance and your appliance manual before any limited foil use.

Against food
Either the shiny or dull side may face the food; USDA says there is no difference for food-contact use. Highly acidic, salty, or highly spicy foods can react with foil, so avoid that contact when possible. This is a specific food-contact consideration, not a reason to treat ordinary foil contact as inherently unsafe. The USDA explains these points in its packaging guidance.
In other settings
Do not assume that permission to use foil or cling film for storage means it is suitable for an oven, or that a product suitable for a conventional oven is suitable for a microwave. Follow the material’s label and the appliance instructions for the specific use.

Make sure reheated food is hot throughout
A suitable cover does not guarantee even heating. Microwaves can leave cold spots, so arrange food evenly, stir or rotate it partway through heating, and allow standing time. USDA advises checking temperature in multiple places; reheated leftovers should reach 165 °F. A food thermometer can help verify that temperature rather than relying on the surface or steam alone.
