For routine boxwood care, thin the shrub by removing selected branches at their attachment points. This lets more light and air reach the interior while preserving leafy growth along the remaining branches. Reserve shearing for maintaining a formal outline; repeatedly clipping only the surface can create a dense outer shell.

Thinning or shearing: which should you use?

Method Best for How it cuts Tradeoff
Thinning Routine maintenance and improving light and airflow Removes selected stems or branches at their point of attachment Keeps the interior more open while retaining foliage along the branches
Shearing Maintaining a formal topiary or defined outline Clips the outer surface of the shrub Repeated shearing can make the outside dense, shade the interior and reduce airflow, contributing to leaf spot and canker problems

University of Maryland Extension describes thinning as the most appropriate pruning method for boxwood: “The most appropriate pruning method for boxwood is thinning out branches from the center of the plant to increase sunlight penetration and promote better air circulation.” Its boxwood decline guidance and common-problems guidance explain the method and the shearing tradeoff.

How to thin a boxwood

  1. Choose crowded or unwanted branches. Look for stems that cross, crowd the interior or disrupt the form you want to keep.
  2. Make selective cuts. Use hand pruners for smaller branches, and cut a selected branch at its point of attachment rather than repeatedly clipping the outer foliage. General cut-placement advice for hand pruners is available in University of Maryland Extension’s shrub-pruning guidance.
  3. Keep leafy growth along the branches. Thin to open the center to light and air, but do not strip the interior bare.
  4. Remove dead or diseased branches. If disease is suspected, follow the relevant diagnosis and sanitation guidance rather than treating every discolored leaf as disease.

These recommendations support selective thinning and removal of dead or diseased branches; they do not prescribe one severe cut to renovate every overgrown shrub.

When to prune

University of Maryland Extension recommends thinning boxwood from December through February in its Maryland guidance. That is a regional calendar, not a universal rule for every climate. Gardeners elsewhere should check their local cooperative extension for timing suited to local conditions. For a formal outline, shearing can serve a shaping purpose, but it is not a substitute for routine thinning.

What to do about winter damage or possible disease

Winter discoloration

Inspect the shrub in spring and prune clearly affected areas. Orange, bronze or yellow foliage alone does not establish a fungal disease; winter stress can also cause discoloration. Some off-color foliage may recover during the growing season if the branches have not died back. University of Maryland Extension’s boxwood problem guide describes winter injury and spring inspection.

Suspected Volutella blight

If Volutella blight is suspected, prune diseased branches when the foliage is dry. Thinning to improve airflow and light is also part of the management guidance. See University of Maryland Extension’s Volutella blight guidance.

Choose tools for the cut

  • Hand pruners: Appropriate for selective cuts on smaller branches. General guidance on pruning shrubs and hand-pruner cuts is available from University of Maryland Extension.
  • Hedge shears: Useful when you are intentionally maintaining a formal topiary or outline. Frequent shearing can produce dense outer growth, so pair shaping with selective thinning rather than relying on surface clipping alone.
