Remove the leaves from the lower part of the stem, place it in moist, clean, porous rooting medium, and cover it to slow moisture loss while it roots. Keep it shaded and the medium moist, not waterlogged. Roots usually form in about three to four weeks.
When to take poinsettia cuttings
Choose a time when the parent plant is making fresh shoots. Early summer is a useful general target, though the calendar can shift with climate and growing conditions. Purdue Extension describes taking cuttings in July or August, when new shoots are 8–10 inches long; North Carolina State Extension recommends stem cuttings in early summer. Follow the plant’s growth rather than treating either window as universal.
If possible, take the cutting in the early morning, when succulent shoots are less likely to wilt in heat, as Purdue’s homeowner guide advises.
What you need
- A healthy poinsettia with fresh growth
- A sharp, clean knife
- Clean coarse sand moistened before use, or a sand-and-peat mix
- A clear plastic bag or glass jar to conserve moisture
- A small pot for transplanting once roots have formed
Purdue’s commercial propagation guide also describes peat/perlite and other commercial media. Whatever medium you use, choose one that is porous yet holds enough water to keep the cutting from drying out. Avoid dense, waterlogged soil.

How to root a poinsettia cutting
- Select and cut a shoot. Choose a healthy, actively growing stem tip and use a sharp, clean knife to take a 4–6-inch cutting. Poinsettia stems release milky sap when cut; keep it from smearing onto other leaves or cuttings. North Carolina State Extension describes this milky sap as characteristic of the plant.
- Remove the lower leaves. Strip leaves from the portion of the stem that will sit in the rooting medium. Leave the upper leaves in place.
- Insert it into the medium. Set the bare lower stem into the moist medium so the cutting is supported. Do not pack the medium tightly or leave it saturated.
- Cover and place in shade. Put a clear bag or jar over the cutting to conserve moisture, then keep it in a shaded location. The cover need not be airtight; the aim is to limit moisture loss while roots are absent.
- Keep the medium moist and allow air in gradually. Check the medium so it does not dry out, but avoid persistently wet conditions. As the cutting roots, gradually ventilate or remove the cover to acclimate it to less humidity.
- Check for roots and transplant carefully. Begin checking after about three to four weeks. If roots have not formed yet, allow a little longer. When transplanting, handle the cutting gently: young poinsettia roots are brittle.
How long rooting takes
Purdue Extension says roots generally form in three to four weeks. Oklahoma State University Extension gives a range of three to five weeks and recommends gradually aerating the cover before transplanting. Conditions vary at home, so use the time range as a guide rather than a deadline.
Should you use rooting hormone?
Rooting hormone is optional: Purdue reports that poinsettia cuttings generally root well without it. The commercial propagation guide notes that hormone can improve uniformity and gives IBA at 1,500–2,000 ppm as a production recommendation. That is a commercial guide, not a requirement for home propagation. If you choose a consumer rooting-hormone product, follow its label.

Managing moisture without a greenhouse
A household jar or clear plastic bag can provide the moisture cover; a dedicated propagation dome is not essential. Keep the cutting shaded, and do not let the medium become waterlogged. Commercial propagation guidance warns that warm, wet, humid conditions can encourage Botrytis, bacterial soft rot, and Rhizoctonia. For home propagation, the practical balance is a moist medium and a cover that can be ventilated as the cutting establishes roots.
Purdue’s commercial guide specifies greenhouse targets of 79–83°F for the medium and 76–82°F daytime air temperature, with managed light, humidity, and misting. Those are commercial production parameters, not household requirements. Purdue’s homeowner instructions instead emphasize shade and a moisture-conserving cover.
