The easiest way to propagate a spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is to root one of its plantlets in moist potting medium. You can leave the baby attached to the parent until it roots, detach it and root it in water, divide a mature plant, or grow from seed. Choose based on whether you want to keep the plantlet attached, make several plants from one clump, or preserve the parent plant’s leaf pattern.

Which spider plant propagation method should you choose?

Method Best for What to know
Root an attached plantlet in potting medium A straightforward start with minimal separation from the parent Leave the plantlet connected until roots form, then cut the runner. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes spider plants as very easy to propagate from their plantlets.
Root a detached plantlet in water Watching roots develop Pot the plantlet once its roots have lengthened; there is no universal timing or root-length threshold established by the cited guidance.
Divide a mature plant A large clump, or a cultivar that does not make offsets Each section needs at least one growing point. Thick roots may need to be cut apart.
Grow from seed Trying seed propagation rather than cloning a plant Seedlings may not have the same leaf coloration as the parent.

How to root an attached plantlet in potting medium

This method lets the baby spider plant establish roots while it remains connected to the parent. Use a small pot and moist, peat-free potting compost or houseplant compost.

  1. Choose a good-sized plantlet growing on a runner. A plantlet that has begun to develop roots is a useful choice.
  2. Fill a small pot with moist potting medium and set it beside the parent plant.
  3. Rest the plantlet on the medium without cutting the runner. If it will not stay in place, hold it gently against the medium with a bent paper clip or piece of wire.
  4. Keep the medium lightly moist while roots develop; do not leave it waterlogged.
  5. Once the plantlet has rooted, cut the runner connecting it to the parent and grow it as a separate plant.

University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension describes placing an attached plantlet on soilless potting medium and severing the stem after roots form. The RHS likewise recommends pinning good-sized offsets with roots into moist, peat-free compost.

How to root a detached plantlet in water

  1. Detach a spiderling from its runner.
  2. Place it in a glass of water so the roots can grow.
  3. When the roots have lengthened, pot the plantlet individually in potting medium.

Use visible root growth as your cue to pot it; the cited guidance does not specify a required number of days or one exact root measurement.

How to divide a mature spider plant

Division is useful when you want to split a substantial clump or have a cultivar that does not produce offsets. The RHS notes that spider plants have thick, fleshy roots; if the clump will not separate by hand, use a knife to divide it.

  1. Ease the mature plant out of its pot.
  2. Separate it into healthy sections, making sure each section has at least one growing point. If the clump resists pulling apart, slice through it with a clean knife.
  3. Pot each healthy section separately in an appropriately sized container with fresh potting soil.
  4. Water to settle the soil and place the divisions in bright, indirect light.
  5. Wait a few weeks before fertilizing the new divisions.

RHS guidance covers division of spider plants, while Iowa State University Extension and Outreach gives general aftercare guidance for divisions and offsets.

Can you grow a spider plant from seed?

Yes, but seed is a less reliable choice if you want a new plant to look like a variegated parent. Seedlings do not necessarily retain the parent’s leaf coloration. To preserve the parent’s appearance, choose a plantlet or divide the plant instead. Wisconsin Extension notes the possible color difference in seedlings; the cited guidance does not establish a seed-starting schedule or germination rate.

What if your spider plant has no babies or runners?

A lack of plantlets does not necessarily mean the plant is unhealthy. The RHS says most spider plants will not flower or produce plantlets until they are at least a year old. Other possible factors include too little light, cool conditions, an overly large pot, or a cultivar that does not produce offsets.

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension discusses short day length in relation to flowering and runner production. That guidance is not a universal indoor-lighting prescription, so avoid changing a plant’s light schedule based on that detail alone. For propagation, the practical alternatives are to wait for a plantlet or divide a mature clump if the cultivar is suitable.

Light, moisture, and common leaf problems

Keep the parent and new plants in bright, indirect light and use potting medium that stays lightly moist rather than waterlogged. Allow excess water to drain and pour away any that collects. Strong direct sunlight can yellow or brown leaves.

Brown leaf tips have several possible causes, including fluoride in tap water, watering problems, dry air, and excessive sun. Check the plant’s conditions before choosing a remedy; one change is not guaranteed to address every cause. The RHS outlines these care factors in its spider plant growing guide.
