How to Promote a Local Business When Roadwork Reduces Walk-In Traffic

Some links on this page are affiliate links: if you buy through them we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.

Make two facts unmistakable wherever customers look: you are open, and there is a verified way to reach you. Update your website, search listings, social profiles, phone greeting and in-store signs today; then use local partnerships, customer follow-up and trackable offers to replace some lost discovery while construction continues.

Start with a same-day access and visibility checklist

Road projects change quickly. Before promoting a route, confirm the current entrance, parking arrangement and pedestrian approach with the road authority, project contact or property manager. Do not guess from an old map or yesterday’s traffic pattern. The project may leave your storefront open while closing a familiar turn, sidewalk or parking entrance.

Task What to check or publish Owner and timing
Verify business details Opening hours, holiday hours, phone number, street address, website link and service-area information in every major listing and directory. Owner or manager; complete before the next opening.
Confirm live access Which approach, entrance, parking area, transit stop or pedestrian path is currently usable; when the information was confirmed. Designated staff member; recheck whenever the project changes.
Write one access message “We are open,” the verified approach, any parking instruction and a phone number for questions. Keep wording consistent across channels. Manager; draft immediately after verification.
Publish the update Website home page, contact page, business listing, social profiles, email footer and voicemail greeting. Marketing or front-desk staff; same day.
Prepare customer answers A short script for calls, messages and walk-ins that explains the current route without blaming or speculating about the project. All customer-facing staff; brief before the next shift.
Set a measurement baseline Current weekly calls, direction requests, online orders, appointments or visits attributed to promotions. Bookkeeper or manager; record before launching an offer.

For a construction or service company that visits customers, replace storefront language with service-area language: state that crews are operating, identify any changed meeting point or dispatch procedure, and give a reliable way to confirm an appointment.

Make your access message consistent everywhere customers search

Update your website first

Put a brief roadwork notice near the top of the home page, not only on a buried news page. Use plain language and a date or “last checked” label so readers can judge how current it is. Include the verified entrance or approach, parking instructions, accessibility information, phone number and a link to a map only if the map reflects the current situation.

  • Base can be filled with sand or water to add weight for wind resistance / Lift Up/Drop In feature to hold your sign panel
  • No tape, screws or Velcro needed because of drop-in sign holder
  • Holds two 24" x 36" signs (Signs not included with stand)

A useful notice answers four questions in a few seconds:

  • Are you open during the project?
  • Can customers still visit, order, collect, or receive service?
  • Which approach or entrance should they use now?
  • How can they call if conditions change?

Keep the notice factual. Do not promise that traffic will return to normal or claim that a detour is permanent when the project team has not said so. If access differs by day or phase, list the applicable dates and tell customers where the next update will appear.

Correct search listings and directories

The U.S. Small Business Administration recommends managing local search listings and correcting inaccurate directory information. Apply that advice by checking your business name, address, phone, hours, website and access notes in each platform you maintain. A wrong “closed” status or an outdated entrance can turn a nearby search into a lost visit.

Use the same core wording in the listing description, recent updates and social profiles. If a platform offers a temporary update, event or post, use it for the access notice while keeping permanent contact details accurate. Ask staff to report customer confusion—such as people arriving at a blocked side door—so you can revise the wording.

The SBA article “10 Local Marketing Strategies That Work,” published March 21, 2017, describes a local business as one drawing most customers from within a 75-mile radius. That is the article author’s working definition, not a universal boundary; choose a radius that fits your actual customers and project area. Read the SBA local-marketing guidance.

Fix the phone and message experience

Change your voicemail greeting to state that you are open and give the current approach before the caller reaches a person. Add the same sentence to appointment confirmations, order-ready messages and email signatures. If staff cannot verify a changing route, promise a callback after checking rather than offering directions from memory.

Use local channels to reach people who are already nearby

Post useful updates in local social spaces

Publish short, dated updates when the entrance, parking or pedestrian route changes. A photo of the correct doorway or a simple map annotation can be more useful than a general “support local business” appeal, provided it does not show unsafe traffic-control areas. Reply promptly to comments asking whether you are open.

Participate in neighborhood, resident, professional and community groups where promotion is allowed. Lead with practical information, then explain what you provide. For example: “Our repair shop remains open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; use the east entrance off Oak Street this week. Call before arriving if you need help carrying equipment.” Follow each group’s rules and avoid posting identical messages so often that members stop reading them.

Consider carefully targeted paid posts

The SBA identifies local social targeting as a way to reach a nearby audience. Current platform names, audience controls and prices change, so confirm the interface and cost before committing money. Target the area you can realistically serve, set a modest test budget that your margins can absorb, and send people to a page containing the verified access message rather than to a generic home page.

Test one clear objective at a time—calls, online orders, appointment requests or visits to an access page. Use a distinct landing-page URL or code so you can tell whether a paid post produced an action. Stop or revise a campaign that generates clicks but no calls, orders or appointments; a high click count alone does not prove that walk-in traffic improved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Publish on a predictable rhythm

During an active phase, set a simple schedule: a current access notice on the website, a social update whenever conditions change, and a weekly reminder while the route remains stable. Date each post. When the project moves to another block or lane, replace the old instruction instead of leaving contradictory updates online.

Borrow trusted local reach through partnerships

Choose complementary businesses

A nearby business serving the same area but selling something different can introduce you to people who already live, work or shop nearby. Examples include a café and a bike repair shop, a hardware store and a tradesperson, or a childcare provider and a family service. The fit matters more than the number of partners: both audiences should have a plausible reason to use the other business.

Agree on one simple message, one time period and one way to count results. A partner can display your access notice, mention you in an email or social post, hand out a card, or offer a reciprocal referral. Give partners wording they can copy accurately, including the verified entrance and a phone number.

Partnership element Practical choice
Audience People within the service area who are likely to need both businesses.
Offer A modest benefit, priority booking, bundled service or information resource that both businesses can honor.
Proof of referral A partner-specific code, card, booking field or “How did you hear about us?” question.
Customer instruction One sentence explaining that the business is open and how to reach it now.
Review point A fixed date to compare redemptions, calls or bookings and decide whether to continue.

Do not imply that a partnership will restore a particular amount of sales. It expands exposure; the result depends on relevance, execution, project duration and customer need. The SBA notes that a promotion with a partner can reach customers from both businesses, while a promotion aimed only at existing customers reaches people who already know you. Anita Campbell states: “If you offer a special or promotion to your customers, then you’re only going to reach the people who already know about your business.” See the full SBA article.

Ask loyal customers for specific referrals

Tell satisfied customers exactly who you can help and how to pass along the access message. A short email or receipt line can say, “We are open via the east entrance; if a neighbor needs this service, please share our number.” Make the request optional and useful. Do not pressure customers to post identical reviews or offer incentives that conflict with a review platform’s rules.

Reconnect with past and dormant customers

Segment the people you can legitimately contact

Start with customers who have opted into your email or text updates and with people for whom you have a lawful, appropriate business relationship. Separate recent customers, lapsed customers and appointment holders so the message matches their likely need. Remove invalid addresses and honor opt-outs.

Lead with help, not panic

Explain that the business remains open, give the verified route and offer a practical reason to return now: a maintenance reminder, collection window, seasonal service, appointment availability or a small offer that your margins can support. Put the expiration date and any limits in the same message. A useful subject line is “Access update: we are open via the east entrance,” not “Roadwork is destroying our business.”

For high-value or appointment-based work, a personal call can prevent a cancellation. Ask whether the customer needs a different arrival time, pickup option or directions. Record the outcome so another employee does not send conflicting instructions.

Invite advocacy and feedback

After a successful visit, ask whether the customer would recommend you to someone nearby. Request honest feedback about confusing signs, blocked paths or missed messages. The SBA’s customer-acquisition guidance includes follow-up, referral requests and customer advocacy as ways to find and retain customers. Review those SBA customer-acquisition ideas.

If you direct customers to leave a review, use a neutral request and never ask for a positive rating in exchange for a benefit. A sign or message may point to your review page, but it should not distract from the more urgent “open and accessible” information.

Use physical visibility only when it is legal and safe

Window and door notices

A large, high-contrast notice inside your window can reassure people who pass the work zone: “OPEN — use the Oak Street entrance — call 555-0100 for help.” Add hours and an update date. Place it where it can be read without forcing pedestrians into the roadway or blocking accessibility equipment.

Portable sidewalk or A-frame signs

A portable sidewalk sign can repeat the open status and verified route when customers can safely see it. It is an application of general signage guidance, not evidence that an A-frame sign restores visits. Check municipal sign permits, property-owner permission, sightlines, wind conditions and minimum pedestrian clearance before placing one.

Never put a sign in a traffic-control zone, on a public right-of-way where it is prohibited, near a temporary barrier, or where it narrows an accessible path. Remove it when staff are not present if local rules or site conditions require supervision. Do not direct people across barricades, into moving traffic or through an unapproved construction entrance. If the project team changes the safe approach, take down the old sign immediately.

Coordinate with the project team

Ask the road authority or contractor’s public-information contact whether business access signs, driveway markers or customer notices are allowed within the work area. They may know about scheduled closures that are not yet obvious from the street. Obtain permission in writing when possible and keep the contact’s phone number with the staff access script.

Design a small offer that tells you what is working

Keep the offer operationally simple

Use an offer only if you can fulfill it without slowing service or damaging margins. It might be a modest add-on, a free estimate, a reserved pickup window or a limited-time discount. State the dates, eligible products or services, redemption method and any capacity limit. Avoid an offer that requires customers to cross an unsafe route or that creates a line outside during construction.

Give each channel a measurable signal

Channel Possible signal What to record
Website access page Calls, contact forms, online orders or bookings using a page-specific code. Date, action, source and whether the customer mentioned roadwork.
Search listing Direction requests, calls or offer redemptions attributed to the listing. Platform report plus staff notes.
Social post or local group Direct messages, code use or “I saw your post” responses. Post date, group or platform and resulting action.
Partner Partner-specific card, code or booking field. Partner name, redemption date and sale or appointment value.
Signage Customers mentioning the window or A-frame notice. Simple tally by shift; do not count passersby as customers.

The SBA recommends tracking promotion redemption. Count outcomes consistently for a defined period, then compare channels rather than relying on impressions or likes. No source establishes a roadwork-specific conversion rate, traffic-loss percentage or expected sales lift, so use your own counts to adjust messages and spending rather than promising a particular return. See the SBA guidance on attracting new customers.

Keep the plan current as construction phases change

Assign one information owner

Name a person responsible for checking the project update, changing the website notice and briefing staff. Give a backup person access to the same files and accounts. A single owner prevents one employee from saying “use the north entrance” while another posts an outdated south-side instruction.

Use a change log

Record the date, source of the access information, affected entrance or parking area, next expected review and channels updated. Keep screenshots of changed listings if your platform makes updates difficult to audit. When a phase ends, remove temporary notices so customers do not follow obsolete directions.

Prepare for short closures

If the authority announces a one-day closure, publish the date and alternatives as soon as they are confirmed. Offer remote ordering, delivery, appointment rescheduling or a different collection point only if you can actually provide it. Tell customers when normal access is expected to return, but label that date as an estimate if the project team has not guaranteed it.

Continue the message after access improves

When familiar access returns, update every channel again and thank customers for adapting. Keep useful partner relationships and the customer-update list, but retire construction-specific discounts that no longer make sense. Compare the project-period counts with your own earlier baseline to learn which channels deserve continued investment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and safer fixes

  • Leaving a “temporarily closed” status online: Correct the listing immediately and check duplicate directories.
  • Posting an unverified detour: Confirm it with the road authority or project contact before publishing.
  • Using inconsistent instructions: Maintain one approved sentence and replace old posts when the route changes.
  • Putting a sign where it obstructs people: Follow local rules, preserve accessible clearance and keep all signs outside traffic-control areas.
  • Buying broad advertising without a measurement plan: Start with one local audience, one action and one code or landing page.
  • Offering a discount that staff cannot honor: Set limits, dates and redemption instructions before announcing it.
  • Blaming the project in every message: State the practical solution first; customers need to know how to reach or book you.
  • Ignoring service businesses without walk-in traffic: Promote appointment availability, dispatch instructions and service-area coverage instead of pretending the problem is foot traffic.

What the available guidance can and cannot establish

The recommendations above adapt general SBA local-marketing advice to a roadwork situation. The cited SBA articles discuss listings, local social outreach, partnerships, referrals, follow-up, advocacy and promotion tracking; they are not controlled studies of construction disruptions. They do not establish a typical percentage drop in visits, a guaranteed recovery, a universal advertising budget or a standard detour strategy.

Your town, project phase, storefront layout, sign rules and actual closure status determine the safe details. Verify those local facts before publishing directions or placing anything outdoors. The SBA’s guidance on finding first customers also emphasizes personal outreach, networking and referral activity—approaches that can complement, but do not replace, accurate access information. Read the SBA customer-finding guidance.

A practical operating sequence

  1. Confirm the live route, entrance, parking and pedestrian approach with the responsible authority or project contact.
  2. Correct hours, phone, address and website details in your listings and directories.
  3. Publish one dated “open and accessible” message on your website, listing, social profiles, voicemail and customer emails.
  4. Brief every customer-facing employee and give them a script for route questions.
  5. Notify opted-in past customers and ask loyal customers for appropriate referrals.
  6. Arrange one complementary-business partnership with a distinct code or referral method.
  7. Use local groups and, if justified, a tightly targeted paid post that leads to the access information.
  8. Add a window notice or portable sign only after checking permission, clearance and safety.
  9. Track calls, directions, orders, appointments, mentions and redemptions by channel.
  10. Review the information whenever construction changes, replace obsolete messages and keep the channels aligned.

This sequence keeps the essential promise simple: customers can find current information, understand how to reach you safely and receive a useful reason to choose you while the project continues.
