How to prevent swimmer’s ear and skin irritation after swimming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep water from sitting in the ear canal, protect the canal’s natural wax, and dry promptly after every swim. A bathing cap, swimming ear plugs, or custom-fitted swim molds can help keep ears drier, but none guarantees prevention. In pools, shower for at least one minute before entering and report strong chemical odors or irritation to staff. In lakes and coastal water, check advisories, avoid posted swimmer’s-itch areas, and towel-dry or shower as soon as you leave the water.

These steps address three different problems: bacterial infection of the outer ear canal (swimmer’s ear), irritation from pool chloramines, and the parasite-associated rash called swimmer’s itch. A rash or discomfort after swimming does not automatically have one of those causes, so persistent, severe, or unusual symptoms need medical advice.

First identify what is causing the discomfort

“Swimmer’s ear” is acute otitis externa, an infection of the outer ear canal. It is different from irritation on the skin of the body and from an inner-ear problem. Water trapped in the canal can soften or wear away protective wax and skin, leaving a moist environment where bacteria grow. Children are more likely than adults to develop it, but anyone can; it is not contagious. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes the condition and prevention steps.

Pool-related irritation has another mechanism. Chlorine or bromine can react with urine, sweat, dirt, feces, skin cells, deodorant, and makeup to form chloramines. These compounds can irritate skin and eyes, and a strong “chlorine” smell can indicate that the water or air needs attention. Swimmer’s itch is separate again: parasites associated with some fresh or salt water can trigger an allergic rash, especially in shallow shoreline areas.

Lake, river, or coast Retained ear moisture; parasite exposure causing swimmer’s itch; other water-quality hazards Check advisories, avoid affected or cloudy areas, avoid marshy snail habitat, and shower or towel-dry immediately Concerning ear symptoms, extensive or worsening rash, fever, breathing difficulty, or illness after exposure

The same person can have more than one issue after a swim. Treat the setting and the symptoms as clues, not as a diagnosis.

Prevent swimmer’s ear by keeping the canal dry and uninjured

Use a physical barrier before entering the water

The CDC lists a bathing cap, swimming ear plugs, and custom-fitted swim molds as options for keeping water out. Choose the option that fits safely and comfortably; a barrier lowers exposure but is not a guarantee against infection.

  • Bathing cap: Pull it over the ears and check that it stays in place during movement. It can reduce splashing around the ear but may not seal the canal.
  • Swimming ear plugs: Use plugs intended for swimming and follow their fit and cleaning instructions. Do not force a plug into a painful or inflamed canal.
  • Custom-fitted swim molds: These are made for an individual ear shape and are a category the CDC names for water protection. Have them fitted through an appropriate hearing or ear-care professional.

Do not assume that an accessory makes diving, prolonged immersion, or contaminated water safe. Replace or clean reusable items as directed so they do not become a source of irritation. If a child is using plugs or a cap, an adult should check that the item remains comfortable and has not shifted or become trapped.

Leave earwax alone

Earwax is part of the ear’s defense. As the CDC puts it, “Ear wax helps protect the ear canal from infection.” Do not use cotton-tip swabs, hairpins, fingers, or other objects to clean inside the canal. Scratching or removing wax can create tiny breaks in the skin and remove protection at the same time. Wipe only the outer ear and the skin around it.

Drain and dry each ear after swimming

Use this sequence when you leave the water:

  1. Tilt your head so one ear faces downward and allow water to run out.
  2. Gently pull the earlobe in different directions while keeping the head tilted. This can help open the canal enough for trapped water to drain.
  3. Dry the outside of the ear and the surrounding skin with a clean towel. Do not push the towel into the canal.
  4. If water remains, use a hair dryer on the lowest heat and lowest fan setting. Hold it several inches away from the ear and keep it moving; stop if the air feels hot or uncomfortable.

Dry both ears even if only one feels wet. Do not use a high-heat setting, insert the dryer nozzle into the ear, or direct forceful air at the canal. Drying is especially important after repeated swims, long sessions, or activities in which the head is submerged for much of the time.

Ask before using ear-drying drops

Ear-drying drops are not appropriate for everyone. Ask a healthcare provider before using them, especially if you have ear tubes, a punctured or perforated eardrum, current swimmer’s ear, ear pain, or drainage. The CDC specifically advises against drops in those situations. A provider can tell you whether a product is suitable for your ear history and symptoms. A drop should never be used to mask increasing pain or fluid coming from the ear.

Reduce pool-related skin irritation

Shower for at least one minute before entering

Rinse in a pool shower for at least one minute before swimming. According to the CDC’s pool-safety guidance, this removes most dirt, sweat, and oils that would otherwise react with disinfectants. Wash off deodorant, makeup, and other products when practical, and use the restroom before entering the pool. These simple actions reduce the material available to form chloramines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Parents can make the one-minute rinse part of the routine before children enter the water. A pre-swim shower is not a substitute for proper pool maintenance, but it reduces the load that the disinfectant must handle. Swimmers should also avoid entering if they have diarrhea or other illness that could contaminate the water.

Recognize a chemical-odor warning

A sharp chemical odor is not proof that a pool has “extra chlorine.” It can signal chloramines in the water or air. Leave the water if your skin or eyes begin to burn or itch, and tell the lifeguard, operator, or facility manager what you noticed. Do not quietly tolerate repeated irritation or assume it is an allergy without evaluation. Staff need the report to investigate ventilation, bather load, and water chemistry.

The CDC notes that swimmers can experience red and itchy eyes, skin irritation, and rashes around pool chemicals. These symptoms may improve after leaving and rinsing, but recurring reactions at the same facility deserve attention. If breathing becomes difficult or swelling develops, seek urgent medical care rather than returning to the pool.

Know the chemistry ranges pool operators use

For typical pool guidance published by the CDC in 2025, disinfectant and pH should be checked at least twice a day and more often during heavy use. Local rules and the product manufacturer’s directions control the actual operating limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Parameter Typical CDC range Important qualification
Free chlorine 1–4 parts per million (ppm) Typical guidance, not a universal legal limit; follow local requirements and product directions.
Bromine 3–8 ppm Typical guidance; the facility should use the range appropriate to its system.
pH 7.0–7.8 Water balance affects disinfectant performance and irritation; testing frequency should increase with heavy use.

These figures are for pool owners and operators, not a reason for swimmers to self-treat a rash. If you manage a private pool, use a properly labeled test method, record results, and test more often when many people are swimming. If a facility cannot explain its testing or response to complaints, choose another swimming location until the issue is addressed.

Rinse after leaving the pool

Shower with clean water after swimming to remove residual disinfectant and contaminants. Pat skin dry instead of rubbing vigorously, particularly if it already feels tight or itchy. If a moisturizer normally agrees with your skin, applying it after drying can help restore comfort, but stop using any product that stings or causes a new rash. Rinse swimwear and towels according to their care instructions and do not keep wet fabric pressed against irritated skin.

Prevent swimmer’s itch in lakes, rivers, and coastal water

Check conditions before you enter

Look for current local health advisories, beach closures, and posted swimmer’s-itch warnings. The CDC’s prevention guidance recommends avoiding unusually cloudy water and places with pipes draining into or near the water. Do not swim or wade near marshy areas where snails are commonly found, and avoid sites known to have swimmer’s itch.

Conditions can change after rain, flooding, heat, or wildlife activity. A location that was open on a previous day may have a new warning, so check each time you visit. Follow the local sign even if the water looks clear. Do not assume that moving from fresh water to salt water eliminates all rash or illness risks; both settings can produce post-swim symptoms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dry or shower immediately

After leaving natural water, towel-dry or shower immediately. The CDC states: “Towel dry or shower immediately after leaving the water.” Pay attention to areas covered by swimwear, where water and organisms can remain against the skin. Change out of wet swimwear promptly if possible. Drying does not make a known contaminated site safe, so avoid re-entering when warnings are posted.

Understand what swimmer’s itch looks like—and what it does not prove

Swimmer’s itch is a parasite-associated allergic reaction and is more likely after wading or swimming in shallow shoreline water. It is not the same as a bacterial ear infection or a chloramine reaction. A post-swim rash can have other causes, including irritation, allergy, infection, or a condition unrelated to the water. Do not diagnose it from appearance alone; contact a healthcare provider if the rash is unusual, severe, spreading, persistent, or accompanied by illness. The CDC explains this distinction in About Swimmer’s Itch.

Choose ear-protection gear without overpromising

Option What it can do Limits and safe-use points
Bathing cap Reduces splashing and water reaching the outer ear May not seal the canal; fit it without pulling painfully on the ear.
Swimming ear plugs Creates a physical barrier to water Fit varies; do not force a plug into a sore, draining, or inflamed ear. Clean or replace as directed.
Custom-fitted swim molds Provides an individualized barrier named by the CDC Requires professional fitting; still not a guarantee against infection.
Ear-drying drops May help evaporate residual moisture for some people Use only after a healthcare provider confirms they are safe; avoid with tubes, a perforated eardrum, swimmer’s ear, or drainage.

There is no single best choice for every swimmer. A cap may be simplest for occasional pool use, while plugs or custom molds may be more practical for someone who regularly submerges the head. Comfort and a safe fit matter more than choosing the most elaborate option. If an item causes soreness, pressure, itching, or drainage, remove it and get advice rather than tightening or inserting it farther.

What to do when symptoms start

Possible swimmer’s ear

Early symptoms can include ear-canal discomfort, itching, tenderness when the outer ear is touched, a blocked sensation, or drainage. Stop inserting anything into the ear and arrange medical advice, particularly if pain is increasing or fluid is coming out. A clinician can examine the canal and determine whether treatment is needed. Do not use leftover prescription drops or someone else’s medication.

Pool-related skin or eye irritation

Leave the pool, rinse with clean water, and tell staff what happened. Seek medical advice if burning, redness, itching, or a rash does not settle, keeps returning at that facility, or is severe. Difficulty breathing, facial swelling, widespread hives, or other signs of a serious allergic reaction require urgent medical care.

Rash after natural water

Shower, change into dry clothing, and avoid re-entering the suspected area until you have checked local warnings. Contact a healthcare provider for a spreading or persistent rash, significant swelling, fever, severe pain, or any symptom that concerns you. A clinician may need to distinguish swimmer’s itch from other infections or allergic conditions.

A practical swim-day routine

Before swimming

  1. Check the pool’s posted conditions or the latest local advisory for a lake, river, or coast.
  2. For a pool, shower for at least one minute and remove as much sweat, dirt, oil, deodorant, and makeup as practical.
  3. For natural water, avoid cloudy areas, discharge pipes, marshy snail habitat, and sites with swimmer’s-itch warnings.
  4. Choose a bathing cap, swimming ear plugs, or custom-fitted swim molds if keeping water out of your ears is important.
  5. Skip the swim or ask a clinician for advice if you already have ear pain, drainage, a known perforated eardrum, or an active ear infection.

During swimming

  • Do not swallow water, and leave if the facility’s air or water causes burning or repeated irritation.
  • Keep children within supervision and discourage them from putting fingers or objects in their ears.
  • Report a strong chemical odor, visible contamination, or sudden skin and eye irritation to the operator or lifeguard.

After swimming

  1. Exit promptly if symptoms begin.
  2. For pool exposure, shower with clean water; for natural water, shower or towel-dry immediately.
  3. Drain each ear by tilting the head, gently moving the earlobe, and towel-drying the outside.
  4. If needed, use a hair dryer on the lowest heat and fan settings several inches away.
  5. Do not swab the canal, remove earwax, or use drops unless a healthcare provider has said they are appropriate for you.
  6. Change out of wet swimwear and monitor any rash or ear symptom rather than assuming every reaction is chlorine-related.

When local advice matters most

Pool disinfectant ranges, testing schedules, beach closures, and recreational-water advisories vary by jurisdiction and can change quickly. The CDC pages linked above provide general U.S. prevention guidance current to 2024–2025; your facility’s operator, local health department, and posted warning take precedence for the water you are entering. If you are unsure whether an ear product or swimming location is safe for you, ask a healthcare provider before exposure rather than trying to prevent symptoms after they begin.

How do I keep water out of my ears when swimming?

A cap, swimming ear plugs, or custom-fitted swim molds can reduce water exposure. Fit and comfort matter, and none is a guarantee. After swimming, tilt each ear downward, gently move the earlobe, towel-dry the outside, and use a hair dryer only on its lowest heat and fan settings several inches away if needed.

Can I use ear-drying drops after every swim?

Not automatically. Ask a healthcare provider first, and do not use drops if you have ear tubes, a perforated eardrum, swimmer’s ear, ear pain, or drainage unless a clinician specifically directs you.

Why is my skin irritated after swimming?

In a pool, chloramines formed when disinfectants react with urine, sweat, dirt, feces, skin cells, deodorant, or makeup can irritate skin and eyes. In fresh or salt water, swimmer’s itch is a separate parasite-associated rash. Other causes are possible, so persistent or severe symptoms need medical advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do before swimming in a pool?

Shower for at least one minute, remove sweat, dirt, oils, deodorant, and makeup when practical, and use the restroom before entering. Report a strong chemical odor or irritation to the lifeguard or pool operator.

How can I avoid swimmer’s itch in a lake or at the coast?

Check current advisories and posted warnings. Avoid known affected sites, unusually cloudy water, discharge pipes, and marshy shoreline areas where snails are common. Towel-dry or shower immediately after leaving the water.

Are swimmer’s ear and swimmer’s itch the same thing?

No. Swimmer’s ear is a bacterial infection of the outer ear canal. Swimmer’s itch is a parasite-associated allergic rash after exposure to some fresh or salt water. Pool chemical irritation is a third, separate problem.

When should I get medical help after swimming?

Seek advice for increasing ear pain, ear drainage, or persistent, spreading, severe, or unusual skin symptoms. Fever, significant swelling, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or widespread hives require urgent care.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Prevent swimmer’s ear by keeping water out when practical, preserving earwax, and drying the canal gently after every swim. Prevent pool irritation with a one-minute pre-swim shower and by reporting strong chemical odors. In natural water, follow current advisories, avoid known swimmer’s-itch areas, and shower or towel-dry immediately. Do not use ear drops or diagnose a rash without appropriate medical guidance.
