How to Secure Your Wi‑Fi Router After Moving Into a New House

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Secure the router before you reconnect the household. Sign in to the router or ISP gateway, replace the administrator credentials, change the Wi‑Fi name and password, install current firmware, select WPA3 Personal (or WPA2 Personal when necessary), disable remote management, WPS and unnecessary UPnP, then create separate guest and IoT networks. Finally, verify the firewall and connected-device list before bringing devices online one at a time.

This sequence matters in a moved-in house because the equipment may still contain the previous occupant’s credentials, network name, access rules or outdated software. Anyone who can reach the administrator side can alter the Wi‑Fi password and undo other protections, as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns.

Why a move is the right time to harden the router

A router is the gateway between every connected device in the house and the internet. When you inherit an ISP gateway or a router left by a previous resident, you cannot assume that its administrator password, Wi‑Fi key, firmware, firewall rules or connected-device list belongs to you. Treat the installation as untrusted until you have taken control of it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The previous network name may also reveal an address, family name or equipment model. Reusing it can cause phones, cameras, televisions and smart-home products to reconnect automatically with saved credentials. A new SSID and password force a deliberate re-enrollment and make it clear which network is yours.

Security is not determined by the router’s Wi‑Fi 6 or Wi‑Fi 7 label alone. Protection depends on the encryption mode, update support, administrator controls, firewall and the features you leave enabled. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) guidance published September 10, 2024, describes cybersecurity requirements for consumer-grade router products; the National Security Agency (NSA) guidance published February 22, 2023, emphasizes WPA3 capability and separation of primary, guest and IoT networks.

Secure the administrator account before reconnecting devices

Use a computer connected by Ethernet when practical. A wired connection prevents a temporary wireless interruption from locking you out while settings are changed. If the router is managed through an ISP app, use the app’s router-administration section and confirm that you are changing the gateway’s administrator credentials, not merely the billing-account password.

1. Identify the correct management interface

  1. Find the gateway’s management address in its printed label, setup guide, ISP app or the device’s network details. Common addresses vary by manufacturer, so do not assume one.
  2. Open the address in a browser or launch the ISP app, then sign in with the administrator credentials supplied with the equipment.
  3. If the credentials are unknown, use the manufacturer’s documented recovery or reset procedure. A reset erases existing configuration, so record ISP connection details and any settings you must re-enter before starting.

2. Replace the default administrator credentials

Change both the administrator username, when the router permits it, and the administrator password. Use a long, unique password that is not used anywhere else. Do not include your name, street address, router brand, house number or an old password. Store the result in a password manager or another protected record so you are not tempted to reuse it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FTC states that if a hacker logs in to the administrator side, the hacker can change settings, including the Wi‑Fi network password. Changing only the wireless key therefore leaves the most important control plane exposed.

3. Change the SSID and Wi‑Fi password

Choose a neutral network name that does not identify your family, address, security system or router model. Set a separate, long Wi‑Fi password. Do not reuse the administrator password. Changing the SSID also prevents devices that remember the old network from silently joining.

Save the new credentials before clicking Apply or Save. The wireless network will restart and every device will disconnect; that interruption is expected.

Install firmware updates before normal use

Firmware updates correct security vulnerabilities, reliability defects and compatibility problems. Check the router manufacturer’s support page or the ISP app for the newest firmware available for your exact model and hardware revision. Some ISP gateways update automatically; verify the last update date or current version rather than assuming that automatic service is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the model, hardware revision, current firmware version and the date you checked.
  2. Download or start the update only from the manufacturer or ISP management channel. Do not use a file intended for a similar-looking model.
  3. Keep the router powered and connected until the update finishes. Interrupting power during installation can corrupt the firmware.
  4. Sign in again after the reboot and confirm the new version.
  5. Enable automatic firmware updates when the option is available and review the update policy periodically.

Government security guidance links firmware maintenance directly to fixing flaws. If a router no longer receives updates, treat that as a replacement warning even if the Wi‑Fi signal remains strong.

Choose WPA3 or WPA2 encryption

Open the wireless-security settings and select the strongest mode supported by all important devices. The FTC describes WPA3 as the newer and best encryption available, while WPA2 remains workable. Avoid WEP and WPA-only modes; they are obsolete.

Security mode Use it when Security position
WPA3 Personal All essential phones, computers and smart-home equipment support it Newer and best option according to FTC consumer guidance
WPA2 Personal An important older device cannot join WPA3 Still workable; use a strong password and keep devices updated
WEP or WPA-only Do not select Obsolete choices; replace the router if it cannot offer WPA2 or WPA3 after updating

Handling older equipment

First try WPA3 Personal. Reconnect critical devices and test printers, cameras, streaming equipment, alarms and work computers. If one essential device supports only WPA2, use WPA2 Personal rather than weakening the entire network to WEP or WPA-only. Replace the incompatible device when practical. Some routers offer a mixed WPA2/WPA3 mode; use it only if the interface clearly identifies it as a personal mode and the older equipment still connects reliably.

Disable internet-facing conveniences you do not need

Every enabled management or discovery feature expands the router’s attack surface. Turn off the following options unless you have a specific, understood requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote management

Disable administration from the internet (often labelled Remote Management, WAN Management or Web Access from WAN). Administration should normally be available only from the home network. If remote access is essential, restrict it to a known method supported by the manufacturer, require strong authentication and review the access logs; do not leave a broad internet-facing interface enabled for convenience.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Wi‑Fi Protected Setup (WPS)

Turn off WPS, especially PIN-based WPS. Vulnerable implementations can expose a PIN attack path that bypasses the strength of the main Wi‑Fi password. Reconnect devices by entering the network password instead.

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP)

Disable UPnP when no application or console in the house requires automatic port mapping. UPnP simplifies discovery and inbound connections, but it also lets devices request changes to the router’s boundary. If you must keep it, review the device list and port mappings regularly and remove entries for equipment you no longer use.

Build separate networks for people, guests and IoT devices

Use the router’s network-segmentation features to keep higher-trust devices apart from visitors and equipment that receives infrequent updates. The NSA recommends separation among primary, guest and IoT networks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Network Place on it Purpose
Primary Work computers, personal phones, tablets and other trusted devices Access to household services and files
Guest Visitors’ phones, tablets and short-term equipment Internet access without sharing the primary password
IoT Smart speakers, plugs, cameras, appliances and other less-trusted equipment Containment when the router supports a dedicated IoT SSID

Configure the guest SSID

  1. Create a guest network with a different SSID and password from the primary network.
  2. Enable the setting that blocks guest access to the local network or client devices, if offered.
  3. Give visitors the guest password instead of the primary password. Change it when you no longer want previous visitors to have access.

A guest network keeps visitors from learning the primary credential and can limit the effect of malware on a guest device. It is also useful for contractors or temporary household help who need internet access but not access to shared files, printers or smart-home controls.

Configure an IoT network

If the router provides an IoT or device network, place equipment that does not need to communicate with work computers or personal files there. Check whether the router allows local-device isolation and whether a specific smart-home hub needs access to both networks. Segmentation is not a substitute for changing device defaults, applying updates and removing products you no longer use.

Verify the firewall and audit every connected device

Confirm the firewall is enabled

Find the firewall, security or internet-protection page and confirm the router’s built-in firewall is on. Avoid changing advanced inbound rules unless you understand the service that needs them. If the gateway has separate IPv4 and IPv6 firewall controls, verify both are protected; the available labels depend on the ISP and model.

Review wireless clients and DHCP clients

Open the Connected Devices, Wireless Clients, Network Map or DHCP Clients list. Compare every entry with equipment physically present in the house. Look for the previous occupant’s television, printer, camera, extender or smart-home hub, as well as generic names you do not recognize.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Rename recognized devices so future reviews are easier.
  • Disable or remove old devices and unknown entries using the router’s access-control feature.
  • Power down a questionable device and refresh the list; an entry that disappears identifies the hardware.
  • Change the Wi‑Fi password again if an unknown device had access before you took control.

FBI guidance specifically recommends checking router device access, disabling unknown or old devices and using guest Wi‑Fi for visitors or untrusted equipment.

Reconnect the house safely, one device at a time

Do not paste the new password into every device simultaneously. A staged reconnection makes it easier to identify equipment that fails because of WPA3 compatibility, outdated firmware or a forgotten static setting.

  1. Log out of the administrator session and close the management browser or app.
  2. Start with one trusted computer or phone on the primary network.
  3. Update that device’s operating system, security software and network-related applications before adding the next device.
  4. Reconnect printers, televisions, speakers, cameras, appliances and other equipment individually. Confirm that each appears in the expected primary, guest or IoT network.
  5. Change each device’s factory administrator password and enable two-factor authentication where the device or service offers it.
  6. Install device firmware and app updates. Disable cloud access, microphones, cameras or remote-control functions that you do not use.
  7. Remove equipment that is no longer used instead of leaving it powered and connected.

Keep a simple inventory containing the device name, network, owner, update date and any required account. The list helps you spot an unexpected client later and gives you a recovery plan when a password or update causes a connection problem.

When to replace the router left in the house

Keep the existing gateway only if it can be brought to a supported, controlled configuration. Buy a replacement when any of these conditions applies:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • After a firmware update, it still cannot offer WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal.
  • The manufacturer or ISP no longer provides firmware updates or has ended support for the model.
  • The firewall cannot be enabled or does not provide a usable way to control inbound access.
  • The equipment cannot create a separate guest network for visitors and untrusted devices.
  • You cannot change the administrator credentials, or remote management is permanently exposed without a safe control.
  • The ISP will not activate the replacement, or the old gateway is required for a service that the new router cannot provide.

Compare an ISP gateway with a replacement

Before buying, check these specific points rather than relying on a Wi‑Fi generation label:

  • Segmentation: Look for separate guest and IoT networks with client-isolation controls.
  • Firewall and management: Verify that the firewall is enabled by default, remote management can be disabled and administrator credentials are changeable.
  • ISP compatibility: Check whether the provider supports customer-owned equipment and whether you need a modem, gateway mode or specific connection settings.
  • Total cost: Include the router, any modem requirement, installation and recurring ISP equipment fees. A current price or support lifetime depends on country, provider and model and must be verified at purchase.

For a general search, the phrase WPA3 Wi‑Fi router identifies the required capability. Exact model recommendations require a current, country-specific check of price, availability, ISP compatibility and support lifetime.

Troubleshoot common move-in problems

You cannot sign in after changing credentials

Confirm that you are using the administrator username and password, not the Wi‑Fi password. Try a wired connection, check capitalization and remove an old saved password from the browser or app. If the new credentials are genuinely lost, use the documented reset process and repeat the configuration from a recorded checklist.

An older device will not join WPA3

Update the device first. If it still lacks WPA3 support, select WPA2 Personal for the network rather than WEP or WPA-only. Replace the device when its software can no longer receive security updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A smart device works on IoT but cannot reach a hub

Some devices require local communication with a hub or phone. Check the router’s IoT isolation and inter-network access controls. Permit only the specific communication the product needs; do not move every trusted computer onto the less-trusted network as a shortcut.

A guest can see household devices

Verify that guest access to the local network is blocked and that the visitor joined the guest SSID rather than the primary SSID. Change the guest password if the wrong network was shared.

The device list still shows an unknown client

Rename known devices, then turn household equipment off one item at a time while refreshing the list. If the entry remains after everything is offline, change the Wi‑Fi password, review wired connections and contact the ISP or manufacturer for help interpreting the client information.

Maintain the configuration after move-in

Router security is an ongoing task rather than a one-time setup. Review the firmware version and update setting at least whenever the router or ISP app announces a change. Recheck the connected-device list after guests, renovations or installation of new smart equipment. Remove products that are sold, discarded or replaced.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Change the administrator or Wi‑Fi password immediately if it was disclosed outside the household, if an unknown device appeared, or if someone who knew it no longer needs access. Keep primary, guest and IoT credentials distinct. Continue using two-factor authentication on the router account, ISP account and device services whenever offered.

These basic measures reflect the FTC’s advice that securing a home Wi‑Fi network helps protect devices from hacking and information theft, while the NSA’s segmentation guidance limits how far a compromise can spread inside the house.
