Those controls must continue from delivery through storage, fabrication, installation, and service.
Pre-painted steel is a layered product rather than bare steel with interchangeable paint. A typical system combines a cold-rolled or metallic-coated steel substrate, surface treatment, primer, and finish topcoat. Because substrate, chemistry, film thickness, and repair limits vary, the product supplier’s instructions take priority over general advice.

Why pre-painted steel needs different protection
The visible finish is only the outer part of a coating system. ArcelorMittal Dofasco describes pre-painted steel as a steel substrate—either cold-rolled or zinc-based metallic-coated—followed by surface treatment, primer, and a topcoat. A scratch can therefore affect one layer or several layers, and the correct repair depends on the system beneath it.
The most common preventable pathway to rust is moisture held against the coating or exposed metal. Condensation between sheets, rain trapped in a bundle, or a wet, poorly ventilated wrap can keep the surface damp long enough for corrosion to begin at a defect, cut edge, fastener area, or damaged coating. Physical damage makes that pathway more likely, so corrosion control starts with avoiding scratches and pressure marks rather than waiting for visible rust.

Use the following principles throughout the job:
- Keep material dry, covered, and ventilated.
- Keep sheets and coils off the ground on clean, smooth supports.
- Prevent dragging, impacts, and unpadded contact with handling equipment.
- Keep dies, rollers, tables, shears, and press-brake contact points clean and free of burrs and chips.
- Document damage at delivery and obtain a compatible repair method before processing.
Receiving and transporting pre-painted steel
Inspect before unloading
Inspect the packaging, coil edges, sheet faces, ends, and accessible contact points as soon as the shipment arrives. Look for torn wrapping, wet bands, standing water, crushed corners, pressure marks, gouges, and scratches. Photograph the condition, record the delivery identification, and notify the supplier before cutting or forming if damage is present. Processing can make it difficult to establish whether a defect occurred in transit or during fabrication.
Keep the load dry in transit
Rain, condensation, and wash water should not remain between sheets or inside coil packaging. A cover that sheds rain but allows air movement is preferable to a tight cover that traps vapor. Do not assume that ordinary paper or plastic wrapping is waterproof; the European Coil Coating Association (ECCA) notes that such wrapping can create problems when moisture cannot escape.
Use the correct coil orientation and equipment
The National Coil Coating Association (NCCA) recommends shipping coils “eye to the sky” to reduce the chance of painted-surface damage. Follow the coil producer’s orientation, lifting, and load limits for the specific product. Pad forklift masts, forks, hooks, slings, and other devices that can touch finished surfaces. Never drag a coil or sheet across a trailer deck, floor, rack, or another sheet.

Build a storage area that dries instead of trapping moisture
Choose a covered, ventilated location
Store pre-painted steel in a closed or covered, dry space with free air circulation and a mild, stable temperature when possible. Protect it from rain, condensation, steam, chemical vapors, and other corrosive substances. Marcegaglia advises against outdoor storage; if outdoor storage cannot be avoided, use the supplier’s detailed procedure rather than improvising a sealed plastic cover.
ArcelorMittal Construction recommends covered storage with free air circulation. Keep sheets off the ground and arrange them so damp can drain and dry. If sheets become wet from rain or condensation, separate them and dry them promptly instead of restacking them while moisture remains between surfaces.

Keep packages above the floor
Marcegaglia recommends at least 15 cm of free space between the packing base and the ground. That clearance improves ventilation and reduces contact with floor water and dirt. Use supports that are clean, smooth, stable, and strong enough for the load. Long pieces need intermediate supports to prevent sagging and rubbing; use the spacing and orientation specified by the supplier for the product.
Manage coils, bundles, and wrapping
NCCA recommends keeping stocked coils banded until they are needed for processing. Store them in weatherproof, climate-controlled conditions where possible. If wrapping is used, it must not create an airtight seal that traps condensation; provide a way for vapor to dissipate while still shielding the material from direct water.

A dry-looking package can still contain condensation at the interfaces between sheets or under a coil wrap. Open, separate, and dry wet material according to the supplier’s instructions before placing it back into storage.
Remove strippable film on the product’s timetable
Protective film has a product-specific removal deadline. Marcegaglia says to remove film as soon as possible and no later than the manufacturer’s specified limit; its stated maximum of 30 days does not apply to coils or bundles. Do not apply that 30-day figure to another product. Confirm the applicable limit with the supplier, especially when material will remain wrapped through fabrication or installation.
Handle sheets and coils without marking the finish
Pad every contact point
Use clean feltboard, polyurethane, or other supplier-approved cushioning where painted surfaces touch forks, hooks, racks, tables, dies, rollers, shears, press brakes, and transport beds. Padding must be clean and free of metal chips; a dirty pad can become an abrasive surface. Replace it when it is torn, compressed, or contaminated.

Move long pieces with enough support
Use enough people or suitable mechanical equipment for long or flexible pieces so they do not bow into floors, racks, or adjacent material. Marcegaglia recommends protected forklift forks and clean, dry gloves for manual handling of long products. Dry gloves improve grip without transferring moisture or grit to the coating.
Lift; do not slide
Dragging creates continuous abrasion and can pull a small burr across a long section of finish. Lift the piece clear, keep it stable, and lower it onto a prepared support. Avoid impacts at corners and edges, where coating damage is easiest to create and hardest to conceal.
Set up fabrication equipment to prevent scratches
Inspect tooling before each run
Check dies, rollers, guides, tables, shears, and press-brake surfaces for roughness, raised metal, burrs, embedded chips, and contamination. Remove debris before it contacts the painted side. Confirm that tooling is aligned and that clearances are correct for the material thickness and profile.
The NCCA’s warning is direct: rough dies can gouge or scratch the pre-painted surface. Baosteel’s technical manual likewise emphasizes minimizing burrs and cleaning chips and particles. A tooling inspection is therefore a corrosion-prevention step, not merely a cosmetic quality check.
Control every surface-to-surface contact
Map the material path through the machine: entry guides, rollers, forming stations, stops, tables, dies, and exit supports. Pad or isolate points where the finished face can touch another surface. Keep the work area clear so chips cannot be carried onto a clean contact point by the next sheet.

Use protective film or paper only when appropriate
Protective film or paper can reduce manufacturing damage, but the right material and application depend on the coating and process. Consult the coil coater or product supplier before selecting it. An unsuitable film can interfere with forming, leave residue, or remain on the product past its permitted removal period.
Prevent corrosion during installation
Keep job-site storage temporary and dry
Move material into the protected installation area as soon as practical. Do not leave bundles where rainwater, mud, concrete washout, salt, fertilizers, solvents, or other corrosive substances can reach them. Maintain the same off-ground support and ventilation used in the main storage area.
Protect edges, cuts, joints, and fastener areas
Cut surfaces and edges deserve particular attention because handling or fabrication can expose or damage coating layers. Keep them clean and dry, and follow the panel manufacturer’s instructions for cutting, edge treatment, fasteners, drainage, and joint design. Do not substitute a generic edge sealer or paint for a specified system.
Prevent water from being trapped in the installed assembly
Arrange sheets and panels so water can drain and air can circulate where the design permits. Avoid details that hold wet debris against the finish. For roof and cladding work, the installation manual controls the acceptable laps, penetrations, fasteners, and drainage paths; general storage advice cannot replace those details.
Repair scratches and coating damage correctly
Classify the damage before touching it
Record the location, size, depth, and cause of the defect. Determine whether the mark is surface transfer, a scratch through the topcoat, damage through the primer, exposed substrate, a dent, or an area already showing corrosion. If the steel identity or coating specification is unknown, pause and obtain it from the supplier.

Use a compatible repair coating
Baosteel’s technical manual recommends applying a special repair coating promptly when processing damage is found, helping prevent corrosion at the damaged area. That recommendation does not identify one universal product. The correct repair coating and preparation method depend on the substrate, surface treatment, primer, topcoat, color, gloss, and exposure conditions.
Ask the original steel supplier or coating manufacturer for the approved repair material, surface preparation, application limits, drying or curing requirements, and any restriction on repairing a particular depth of damage. Keep that instruction with the job records.
Avoid unverified touch-up methods
Do not assume household paint, an arbitrary aerosol, an abrasive pad, or a wire brush is suitable. Abrasives and brushes can enlarge the defect or remove sound coating, while an incompatible paint can fail to bond or create a visible and premature repair. Use those tools or materials only when the product’s written instructions specifically call for them.
Recommended Free Tools
Follow a controlled repair sequence
- Isolate the item. Mark the damaged piece so it is not installed or shipped before disposition.
- Identify the system. Confirm the steel product, substrate, coating family, color, and exposure requirements with the supplier.
- Prepare as directed. Clean and prepare the area exactly as the approved repair method specifies; do not improvise with aggressive abrasion.
- Apply the specified coating. Use the recommended repair coating, coverage, tools, and environmental conditions.
- Protect the repair. Allow the specified cure or dry time and prevent renewed contact, moisture, or handling damage.
- Record the result. Note the product used, batch or lot information when available, date, operator, and location for future maintenance.
Maintain pre-painted steel after installation
Keep the surface free of moisture-holding contamination
Dirt, leaves, salts, construction dust, and other deposits can hold moisture against the finish. Remove accumulations using the cleaning method specified by the panel or coating supplier. The available industry guidance does not establish one universal cleaner, pressure, or inspection interval, so do not apply a generic wash recipe to every coating.
Inspect vulnerable locations
Include cut edges, folded edges, joints, penetrations, fasteners, low points, concealed interfaces, and any area that has been struck or scratched. Look for blistering, lifting, staining, red or brown corrosion products, damp debris, and failed sealant. Investigate the source of moisture rather than covering a symptom.
Correct the cause, then repair the coating
If corrosion follows a leak, trapped condensation, blocked drainage path, or damaged joint, correct that condition first. Then obtain the approved repair procedure for the affected coating system. A touch-up over continuing moisture will not solve the underlying exposure.
Choose the safer option when conditions compete
| Decision | Preferred practice | Why it reduces damage |
|---|---|---|
| Storage location | Covered, dry, ventilated storage with material off the ground | Reduces rain, condensation, floor water, and moisture trapped between sheets or wraps |
| Outdoor requirement | Use the supplier’s outdoor procedure rather than sealing the load in plastic | Outdoor storage is not generally recommended, and an airtight cover can trap vapor |
| Handling contact | Clean, smooth, padded forks, hooks, racks, and tables | Prevents pressure marks, abrasion, gouges, and transfer of metal debris |
| Tooling condition | Aligned dies and rollers with correct clearances and no burrs or chips | Stops rough contact from cutting through the coating during forming |
| Repair choice | Supplier- or coating-manufacturer-approved repair coating | Matches the actual substrate and coating layers instead of relying on an unverified generic paint |
Troubleshoot common damage scenarios
The bundle arrived wet
- Photograph the packaging and wet areas before opening further.
- Notify the supplier and record the delivery details.
- Separate and dry sheets promptly under covered, ventilated conditions if the supplier authorizes it.
- Do not restack wet sheets or close them in an airtight wrap.
A forklift scratched the painted face
- Stop moving the affected piece with the same unpadded equipment.
- Document the scratch and identify whether the substrate is exposed.
- Pad the equipment and obtain the approved repair method before installation.
Scratches appear in a forming line
- Stop the run and inspect every die, roller, guide, stop, and table.
- Remove burrs, chips, and embedded debris; verify alignment and clearances.
- Check protective film or paper selection with the coil coater.
- Segregate affected pieces and repair or replace them according to supplier instructions.
Rust-colored staining is visible after installation
- Determine whether the source is a cut edge, fastener, trapped moisture, damaged coating, or contaminant.
- Correct drainage, leakage, or contact conditions first.
- Have the coating supplier specify cleaning and repair; do not cover active corrosion with generic paint.
A practical control checklist
At delivery
- Inspect packaging and visible surfaces before processing.
- Record and photograph damage; notify the supplier promptly.
- Confirm the required coil orientation and lifting method.
In storage
- Use a covered, dry, ventilated space.
- Keep packages at least 15 cm above the ground where Marcegaglia’s guidance applies to the packing base.
- Use clean, smooth supports and intermediate supports for long pieces.
- Keep coils banded until needed and avoid airtight wrapping.
- Separate and dry material wetted by rain or condensation.
- Remove protective film within the product-specific limit; the cited 30-day maximum is not a general rule and excludes coils and bundles.
During handling and fabrication
- Use padded forks, hooks, slings, racks, and contact surfaces.
- Wear clean, dry gloves and lift rather than drag.
- Inspect dies, rollers, guides, tables, shears, and press brakes.
- Remove burrs, chips, and metal particles; verify alignment and clearances.
- Use protective film or paper only after confirming compatibility.
After installation
- Keep dirt, water, salts, and corrosive substances from accumulating.
- Inspect edges, cuts, joints, fasteners, low points, and damaged areas.
- Maintain drainage and follow the panel manufacturer’s instructions.
- Repair coating damage promptly with the approved system-specific coating.
What the supplier must decide
General handling guidance cannot establish a universal scratch-repair threshold, a single touch-up paint, a cleaning formula, or a fixed inspection interval for every pre-painted steel product. Those decisions require the product identity and coating specification. Obtain written instructions whenever the material has been wet, the substrate is exposed, corrosion is visible, a protective film has remained in place unusually long, or the installation environment is unusually corrosive.

The prevention strategy is consistent even when the coating chemistry changes: keep moisture moving away, keep contact surfaces clean and padded, avoid damage during every transfer, and use only a repair method that belongs to the actual coating system.
