Stop heat entering first, then remove the heat that remains. In a well-insulated, airtight house, close or shade sun-facing windows before the glass heats up. Keep windows closed while outdoor air is hotter than the rooms, and ventilate—preferably with secure cross-flow or a safe night purge—when outdoor air becomes cooler. Reduce heat from lights, appliances and cooking, check that mechanical ventilation is operating in its summer setting, and use fans only within the heat-health advice that applies where you live.
Insulation slows heat transfer in both directions; it does not by itself prevent overheating. The right combination depends on orientation, glazing, local climate, nighttime temperatures, security, noise and the ventilation system already installed. The steps below separate immediate actions from retrofit and design decisions so you can choose measures that suit your home rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all product.

Why an airtight, insulated home can become too hot
Insulation reduces unwanted heat flow through roofs, walls and floors. Airtightness limits draughts and uncontrolled air leakage. Those properties are valuable for winter energy performance, but in summer they can also slow the escape of heat from people, appliances, lighting and sun-warmed surfaces. The Department of Health and Social Care’s England checklist puts the issue plainly: “some highly insulated or energy-efficient homes may trap heat inside.” (Beat the heat: keep cool at home checklist, updated 21 July 2026.)

Glazing is often the quickest route for solar heat gain. Once direct sun has heated a window, blinds and curtains on the room side are dealing with heat that has already entered. External awnings, shutters or exterior blinds intercept sunlight before it reaches the glass. Ventilation then has a different job: it removes accumulated heat only when the outside air is cooler than the inside air and it is safe to open the building.

These are separate controls. A powerful fan cannot undo unrestricted afternoon sun, and an open window cannot cool a room when the air outside is hotter. Treat overheating as a sequence: block solar gain, manage openings, limit internal gains, and protect occupants.
What to do during a hot spell
1. Shade the windows before the sun reaches them
Close shutters, roller blinds or awnings on windows exposed to strong sun before the room starts heating. External awnings and shutters are specifically listed in Welsh Government advice for highly insulated homes (Considering summertime overheating in highly insulated homes, 2024). Prioritise the elevations and roof windows receiving direct sunlight; keep the shading in place through the period when those windows are exposed.
Internal blinds and curtains remain useful when external shading is not possible, but they should be closed early rather than after the room has become hot. Do not assume that a particular blind, awning or shutter will fit every frame or deliver a guaranteed temperature reduction: performance depends on orientation, glazing, colour, installation and local sun paths.

Use a simple comparison: if the outdoor air is hotter than the indoor air, keep sun-exposed windows closed and shaded. When outdoor air becomes cooler, open suitable windows to release heat, provided security, weather and local conditions allow it. The England checklist and Welsh factsheet both support this conditional approach (England checklist; Welsh factsheet).
Do not leave an insecure ground-floor or easily accessible window open simply to chase a lower temperature. Use restrictors, locks and openings that your household can supervise. Noise, pollution, rain and wind can also make an opening unsuitable even when the air is cooler.
3. Create cross-ventilation where it is safe
Open appropriate windows or doors on opposite sides of the home to establish a path for air through the building. Cross-ventilation can work better than opening one window in a sealed room because it gives warm air a route out and cooler air a route in. Layout, wind direction, internal doors, security and restrictions on openings determine whether it is practical.

High-level openings can help discharge warm air, but their usefulness depends on the building’s layout and the ability to operate them securely. Never wedge open an opening that creates an unacceptable fall, intruder or fire risk. If your home has a mechanical ventilation system, check that it is running and select its summer mode or bypass if the manufacturer provides one. Not every system includes the same feature, so use the controls and instructions for your installation rather than assuming a setting exists.
4. Reduce heat produced indoors
Switch off unused lights, televisions, computers, chargers and other electrical equipment instead of leaving them generating heat in occupied rooms. Plan cooking for a cooler part of the day when practical; ovens and hobs can add a concentrated heat load to a small room. The England checklist and Welsh factsheet both recommend reducing unnecessary electrical and cooking heat.
Keep the hottest rooms unoccupied where possible, and move sleeping arrangements to a cooler part of the home during a severe spell. Close doors between a hot room and a cooler one only when doing so helps preserve that cooler space; otherwise, a planned ventilation route may be more useful.
5. Use fans as comfort aids, not as a substitute for cooling air
A fan moves air across skin and can make a person feel cooler, but it does not lower the room’s air temperature. It can also add a small amount of motor heat. Follow local heat-health advice rather than treating one number as universal. The England checklist advises using electric fans when the air temperature is below 35°C. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance says indoor fans should be used only below 90°F (about 32.2°C) (About Heat and Your Health, 20 July 2026). These are jurisdiction-specific cautions, not a single worldwide threshold. If the air is at or above the applicable limit, move to a cooler place and follow public-health advice instead of relying on a fan.
6. Protect people at higher risk
Older people, young children, pregnant women, people with long-term conditions, people taking some medicines and socially isolated people can be more vulnerable during hot weather. The England checklist advises moving to a cooler part of the home and seeking a cooler location when necessary, provided travel is safe. Watch for signs that someone is becoming unwell and follow the public-health or medical advice for your jurisdiction.
Retrofit measures for an existing home
External shading: the first retrofit to investigate
Awnings, exterior roller blinds and shutters stop direct sunlight before it reaches the glazing. They can be fixed to individual windows or designed as part of a façade strategy. Check that fixings suit the wall construction, that the system can withstand local wind, and that operation does not compromise escape windows, maintenance access or security. The guidance supports these categories but does not establish a universal product, price or temperature saving.

Internal shading and solar-control film
Roller blinds, shutters and curtains are useful where external work is impractical. The Welsh factsheet also identifies reflective window film as a possible retrofit and specialist glazing with a low solar-heat-gain specification as a design option. Film and replacement glazing are not automatically compatible with every frame, seal, coating or pane. Obtain advice on the actual glazing before applying a film or ordering replacement units; an unsuitable product can create optical, thermal or warranty problems.
Ventilation openings and mechanical systems
Map which openings can provide a safe route from cooler intake to warmer exhaust. Cross-ventilation may be limited by a cellular plan, single-aspect rooms, neighbouring noise or security constraints. High-level vents can be helpful where they are safely reachable and protected from rain and intrusion.
For mechanical ventilation, verify filters, power and controls, then look for a documented summer mode or bypass. A bypass may allow cooler outdoor air to avoid the heat exchanger in systems designed for that function, but the feature is not universal. Do not disable a whole-house system without understanding the effect on indoor air quality and moisture control.

Glazing and orientation changes
When replacing windows or undertaking a major refurbishment, consider the direction each opening faces, the amount of glass, external shading and the solar-heat-gain characteristics of the proposed unit together. A low-solar-gain specification may help on a strongly exposed elevation, while the correct choice depends on daylight, winter solar gains, ventilation and the existing frame. Ask the designer or installer to assess overheating as well as insulation and U-values; improving one metric does not automatically solve the others.
Designing a new build or major renovation
Overheating decisions are easiest before construction, when orientation, window size, shading, ventilation routes and controls can be coordinated. The Australian Government’s Passive cooling guidance describes passive measures as a combination of shading, ventilation and building design rather than a single product. New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment also publishes Passive cooling guidance; local climate and building rules still govern what is appropriate.
For a project in England, Approved Document O addresses overheating in new residential buildings. Its frequently asked questions explain that practicable passive means should also be incorporated when mechanical cooling is considered (Approved Document O: Overheating, frequently asked questions, guidance page last updated 15 June 2022). This is an England regulatory example, not a universal retrofit requirement or a substitute for the rules in another country.

Coordinate the elements instead of specifying them in isolation
- Window orientation and area: identify elevations with the strongest solar exposure and avoid treating every façade identically.
- Shading geometry: provide external shading where it can block direct sun while preserving daylight and safe window operation.
- Ventilation path: plan openings or mechanical extract so warm air has a realistic route out, including secure night operation.
- Control strategy: make it clear who operates blinds, windows and summer modes, and what conditions trigger each action.
- Security and weather: include restrictors, locks, rain protection and safe access rather than relying on occupants to improvise.
- Heat sources: place high-load appliances and cooking arrangements where their heat can be managed or extracted.
Ask the design team to consider the hottest occupied rooms, bedrooms used overnight and rooms with limited opening windows. A home can meet an energy-efficiency goal and still need a specific overheating strategy.

A safe night-purge routine
Night ventilation is useful only when the outside has cooled below the indoor air temperature. Set up the home before bedtime so you are not relying on a single open window in a hot bedroom.
- Identify which rooms are hottest and which windows can open without creating an unacceptable security, fall or weather risk.
- As the outdoor temperature drops below the indoor temperature, close or reduce shading on openings that would otherwise admit direct sun, then open the selected ventilation path.
- Use openings on opposite sides or at different levels when the layout allows, creating a route through the home rather than a dead-end opening.
- Keep internal doors positioned to support that route, unless closing them is needed to protect a cooler room or a sleeping occupant.
- Close windows again before outdoor air becomes hotter than indoors in the morning, and restore shading on sun-exposed glazing.
- If noise, rain, wind, smoke or security conditions change, stop the purge and use only openings that remain safe.
The exact hours will change with weather and location. A clock-based routine is less reliable than comparing indoor and outdoor conditions.
Diagnosing why a room still overheats
The room heats up in the afternoon
Check whether direct sun reaches the glazing and whether shading was deployed before exposure. Prioritise external shading or an appropriate solar-control solution for that elevation. Closing the window while the outside air is hotter prevents additional hot air entering, but it cannot remove heat already absorbed by walls, floors and furnishings.

The house stays hot overnight
Check whether outdoor air actually becomes cooler than indoors and whether a secure cross-flow route exists. Look for blocked, closed or incorrectly controlled ventilation openings, and confirm whether a mechanical system has a summer mode or bypass. If the layout is single-aspect or openings cannot be used safely, a designer may need to address ventilation routes as part of a larger alteration.
A fan seems to make conditions worse
Confirm the applicable public-health threshold and the actual air temperature. A fan can improve perceived comfort when conditions are below the relevant limit, but it cannot cool a room whose air is already dangerously hot. Move the person to a cooler location and follow local heat-health advice when the threshold is exceeded or anyone feels unwell.
Opening windows creates security or noise problems
Use only openings with suitable restrictors, locks and supervision. Consider external shading, a secure high-level opening or a properly designed mechanical ventilation solution instead of leaving vulnerable windows open. Noise, pollution and wind are legitimate reasons to limit openings even during a hot spell.

- Do not assume more insulation alone will solve summer overheating; it can also slow heat leaving the home.
- Do not assume every airtight home has the same ventilation controls, summer bypass or safe window arrangement.
- Do not treat the England 35°C fan advice and the US 90°F advice as interchangeable worldwide limits.
- Do not apply window film or replace glazing without checking compatibility and the consequences for the existing frame and glass.
- Do not promise a fixed temperature saving from an awning, blind, film or fan; the cited guidance does not provide comparable product performance data.
- Do not leave insecure windows open overnight or disable mechanical ventilation without considering security, moisture and indoor-air-quality consequences.
When professional advice is worthwhile
Seek an overheating assessment when bedrooms remain hot despite sensible shading and ventilation, when a refurbishment changes window area or orientation, or when the home has limited safe openings. A competent designer can review solar exposure, glazing, shading, ventilation paths, controls and occupant needs together. For new residential work in England, ask how the design addresses the applicable Approved Document O requirements and what passive means are included before mechanical cooling is proposed.
Provide the adviser with the rooms that overheat, the times of day, which windows receive sun, whether outdoor air is cooler overnight, the ventilation-system model and any security or noise restrictions. That information is more useful than selecting a product from a generic list.
