How to Prevent Blossom Drop on Tomato Plants

Tomato blossom drop is most often linked to temperature stress. Learn how to check conditions and reduce avoidable stress without expecting a guaranteed cure.

Tomato blossoms most often drop before fruit sets because temperature extremes interfere with pollination. Dry soil, strong winds, unsuitable humidity, excess nitrogen, and too little sun can add stress. Keep soil moisture steady during dry spells, avoid unnecessary fertilizer, and address heat exposure where possible—but no care routine can guarantee fruit set during prolonged extreme weather.

What blossom drop looks like

Blossom drop is when a tomato flower dries up or falls before a fruit begins to develop. It is different from blossom-end rot: that disorder appears as damaged, often dark or sunken tissue on the blossom end of a tomato that has already started growing. If you see damaged fruit rather than fallen flowers, the problem is not blossom drop.

Why tomato blossoms fall before fruit sets

Temperature extremes

Tomato flowers need viable pollen and successful pollination to set fruit. Temperature warning ranges vary by extension source, cultivar, and growing conditions; they are not universal cutoffs. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says daytime temperatures above 85°F or nights below 55°F can interfere with pollination and cause blossom drop. Alabama Cooperative Extension System identifies days above 85°F and nights above 72°F as conditions in which flowers often abort, and notes that prolonged heat can make the problem more severe and persistent. [Iowa State University Extension, updated January 27, 2025; Alabama Cooperative Extension System, revised June 22, 2023]

Other sources describe somewhat different night-temperature ranges: Purdue University Extension says fruit set occurs with nights between 55°F and 75°F, while Oklahoma State University Extension says nights outside 55°F to 70°F can inhibit effective pollination. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources describes blossom drop after several days above 90°F by day and above 72°F at night, or nights below 55°F. These ranges are useful warning signs, not guarantees that every plant will set fruit within them. Water stress, wind, humidity, and growing conditions

Dry soil and strong winds can contribute to blossom drop. High humidity can also interfere with pollen release: University of Maryland Extension explains that unsuitable heat and humidity can make pollen sticky or prevent it from releasing properly, after which an unpollinated flower may dry and fall. [Iowa State University Extension; University of Maryland Extension]

Excess nitrogen, high fertilizer salt levels, temperatures below 55°F, and insufficient sun are additional concerns identified by Alabama Cooperative Extension. Too much nitrogen can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowering and fruit set. [Alabama Cooperative Extension System]

What to do when blossoms are dropping

Check the weather before changing your care routine

Compare recent daytime highs and nighttime lows with the source-specific ranges above. If flowers began dropping during a stretch of unusual heat or cold, temperature stress is a likely cause. Iowa State notes that fruit set should increase as temperatures moderate; wait for more suitable conditions rather than assuming fertilizer or extra watering will solve a weather-driven problem. Keep root-zone moisture reasonably consistent

During dry weather, water deeply enough to reach the roots and avoid letting the soil repeatedly dry out. Iowa State recommends deep watering once a week during dry weather. Alabama Cooperative Extension gives about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week as general guidance for tomatoes, but actual needs vary with rainfall, soil, heat, and whether plants are growing in containers. Treat that amount as a starting point, not a rigid schedule. [Iowa State University Extension; Alabama Cooperative Extension System]

Use fertilizer cautiously and provide adequate sun

Do not add fertilizer automatically when flowers fall. Excess nitrogen and high fertilizer salt levels can contribute to the problem; Alabama Cooperative Extension recommends using a soil test to guide fertilizer decisions. It also recommends at least six hours of full sun daily, so avoid keeping plants shaded all day as a response to heat. [Alabama Cooperative Extension System]

Reduce heat exposure during the hottest periods

For recurring hot-weather problems, consider a heat-tolerant tomato variety suited to your area. Alabama Cooperative Extension describes heat-set varieties as bred for high daytime and nighttime temperatures; check local extension advice and the seed-packet description when choosing one. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources identifies shade cloth as an option for protecting plants during the hottest periods. The sources do not establish one shade percentage or installation design for all gardens, so use shade as a temporary heat-management measure rather than an all-day substitute for suitable sun. Neither variety choice nor shade guarantees fruit set through prolonged extreme heat. [Alabama Cooperative Extension System; UC Agriculture and Natural Resources]

Try gentle vibration only when pollen movement is the issue

Tomato flowers need pollen to move for fruit to set. In a still indoor space or similarly calm location, gently shake a flower cluster while the flowers are open to help release pollen. This may assist pollen movement, but it cannot restore pollen viability when temperature or humidity conditions are unsuitable. [University of Maryland Extension; University of Arizona Cooperative Extension]

Do not rely on hormone sprays as a general cure

Purdue University Extension says hormone sprays may help with some blossom drop associated with low temperatures, but they can produce misshapen fruit and do not work when temperatures are too high. Iowa State reports inconsistent results. These sprays are not a dependable fix for heat-driven failure to set fruit. [Purdue University Extension; Iowa State University Extension]

When to expect fruit set to resume

If dropping flowers coincide with unfavorable temperatures, new fruit set may improve when conditions moderate. The earlier flowers that have already dried or fallen will not become tomatoes; watch for new flowers and developing fruit after the stress passes. If the problem continues, review watering, fertilizer use, sun exposure, and whether the variety is suitable for your climate.
