Before your first day at a construction training center, confirm where and when to report, what to wear, and which documents or equipment the center expects. Requirements vary by provider and course, so check your joining instructions and ask before buying PPE, boots, or tools.
Confirm where and when to report
Save the center’s address, reporting location, arrival time, and the name or number of the person to contact. Ask which entrance or office to use and what to do if you are delayed. Check whether you need to complete forms or other tasks before arriving, and whether the first session begins with paperwork or orientation.
Follow the instructions from your own provider rather than assuming a standard start time. For example, the Illinois Laborers’ & Contractors Joint Apprenticeship & Training Program tells trainees at its Edwardsville center to report to the office by 7:00 a.m. Monday for paperwork. That is a local instruction, not a general construction-training schedule. See the Edwardsville Training Center information.
Ask what to wear and bring before you pack
Contact the center if its instructions do not clearly state the dress code, whether hands-on work is planned, and what equipment is required. Ask for exact specifications and whether the center issues or supplies any items. UK apprenticeship guidance recommends asking about dress code and required tools or other items; Australian Government guidance also recommends confirming equipment, location, contacts, and what to bring.

These are examples of provider-specific requirements, not a universal kit:
- The Illinois Laborers’ program lists hard hats, safety glasses, and an OSHA standards book as issued PPE that apprentices must bring to class. It says students need to supply concrete boots for concrete classes.
- A Six Nations Polytechnic apprentice checklist names CSA safety glasses, CSA steel-toe boots, textbooks, basic hand tools, and other PPE described in the learner’s welcome email. The checklist also asks apprentices to bring a locker lock.
Use your own program’s current directions to decide what belongs in your bag. The UK apprenticeship service advises learners to use their initial assessment to find out what their employer and training provider expect on the first day. Read its preparation guidance; Australian apprentices can also check Start your apprenticeship.

Use this checklist the day before
- Review your instructions. Check the schedule, handbook, welcome email, and any student-portal messages from the center.
- Confirm logistics. Verify the address, reporting point, start time, contact details, and late-arrival procedure.
- Check clothing and equipment. Ask whether there will be practical training and confirm required clothing, footwear, PPE, tools, and specifications, including what the center supplies.
- Check paperwork. Bring requested documents and completed forms. Ask the provider which documents it needs; requirements depend on the program and jurisdiction.
- Plan food and transport. Ask about meal options, rules for bringing food or drink, parking, bike storage, and public transport.
- Pack only what is requested. Add required gear, any specified access item such as a locker lock, and a notebook and pen for instructions and questions. Bring water or food only if permitted and useful given the campus arrangements.
Plan for meals and getting to the center
Do not assume food or parking will be available. Ask the provider what options exist and whether you may bring food or drink. The Edwardsville facility says lunch is provided, while the Six Nations Polytechnic checklist says its campus has no food services other than vending machines. Those examples show why it is worth checking your own center’s arrangements.
Confirm parking, bike storage, and public-transport options in advance, then leave enough time to find the correct building or office.

Know what the first day may involve
There is no single first-day schedule established for all construction training centers. Depending on your program, the day may include paperwork, orientation, a tour, or practical training. Ask the provider what is planned and follow its joining instructions.
Apprenticeship training includes learning and assessment, but assessment methods vary and are explained by the provider. Use an initial assessment or orientation to ask what your training and work will involve, and tell the provider about relevant previous training, qualifications, or experience. The UK apprenticeship service’s guidance recommends using the initial assessment to understand expectations.

What to do if the instructions are unclear
- Ask the center directly about unclear requirements rather than buying gear based on another school’s checklist.
- If you are unsure whether an item is mandatory, ask whether it is required for day one, supplied by the center, or needed only for a later class.
- For PPE or footwear, confirm the required type or standard and whether your course has a specific rule.
- Keep the provider’s reply with your joining instructions so you can refer to it when packing.
